From the artist: Golbets (голбец, голубец) are generally Old Believers (Eastern Orthodox Christian) crosses, previously slavic pagan funeral structures. When the deceased was interred, they put a so-called “death hut” on the grave, made from a log house, filling it with supplies for the afterlife and sometimes they even put vessels with ashes. In fact, this is a smaller copy of real houses (домовина), which were placed in addition to the grave itself, also by the road indicating the way to burial. It also seemed like people believed that such structures protected the village from evil spirits After the Christianization of Rus’ in 988, the church banned all pagan rituals and such crosses began to disappear gradually. That is why in my country golbetses are best preserved in villages far from large cities in the Russian North
