The negative effects of fast fashion
In today’s day and age, many people use fast fashion as a way to get affordable clothing because not many name brand stores have this option of affordable, good quality clothing. Although it may seem good at first, there are many negatives to this alternative.
The first one would be the environmental impact
Fast fashion contributes to massive textile waste. This is due to the poor quality of the clothes you buy off of websites like Shein, Temu, Zara, H&M, and more. It also contributes to water pollution and carbon emissions. Many fast fashion brands use polyester for clothing since it is cheap. This fabric sheds microplastics into our oceans and other bodies of water due to the non-ability to hold up very long.
The second negative effect would be the poor labor conditions
Fast fashion brands exploit workers in developing countries, paying them extremely low wages and exposing them to unsafe working environments just to make your clothes.
The third effect is the unethical business practices
These bigger companies have been caught stealing designs from small businesses to bigger corporations to sell the same items but lower quality for cheaper. An example would be Shein stealing an independent designers skirt and selling it for way less. The original creator, @bbriannagomez on tiktok, called out this unethical behavior. Shein, and other fast fashion companies, continue to steal ideas.

Another example would be @Devsdoodlesco on tiktok as well. Shein was caught selling hoodies that she had designed for cheaper.
Although the cheap prices may reel you in, it takes away from the originality of the creators design. It takes away their profit from their hard work. There are alternatives to fast fashion.
The alternatives
Instead of shopping at fast fashion stores, you can thrift, buy 2nd hand or upcycle clothes.
If you are more of an online shopper or your town may not have exact what you want at the thrift, you can buy from websites like depop, etsy, poshmark, vinted, and mercari.
Stores to Avoid!!
shein
zara
h&m
forever 21
fashion nova
uniqlo
boohoo
prettylittlething
ASOS
mango
Lets put a stop to these greedy companies feeding off of overconsumption. Choose the alternative, save our planet!
