Thoughts on fine fan-artist
Recently I found myself questioning my artistic identity: what exactly am I creating?
On one hand, it shouldn’t have bothered me so much - I’ve long given up the idea of chasing trends or fitting popular tastes. Yet, I still couldn’t get rid of confusion: What’s missing in my narratives that makes my art less "catchy"? I push myself daily to improve technicals and creativity, but there's always a gap I can't resolve.
Then, out of nowhere, the concept of a "fine fan-artist" hit me. The moment the phrase popped into my head, it just clicked.
I’d always hesitated to associate my work with "fine art." In my (quite) limited understanding, 80% of fine artists seem to spend their days grinding photo studies to master fundamentals, while I focus intensely on design, creation, and storytelling. Plus, I’ve never seen fine art built around gay couples from pop anime making out. The idea feels almost contradictory.
But the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. The bulk of my time is spent on brushwork, symbolism, layered narratives, and mood. I wrote essays dissecting my compositions with pages of philosophical references. Increasingly, characters like Law and Sanji feel less like subjects, but more like vessels, to express something deeper.
So I asked myself: What is fine art exactly? If the core lies in pure aesthetic pursuit, in exploring spiritual depth through visuals, then does the subject matter at all? Maybe not.
Once I settled my answer, everything suddenly fell into place: why my art resonates the way it does (or doesn’t). I finally grasped what was "missing," and more importantly, I stopped seeing it as a flaw.
There’s definitely something absurd, even hilarious, about pursuing "high" art within an anime fandom. But alas.
