it was incredibly unsettling to see a face she knows so well talk with far more care and understanding than she'd ever known it express . that unsettling feeling was often accompanied by confusion and an odd hostility she couldn't shake . guard remained high no matter how desperately she wished to lower it .

words are met with a pause , woman mulling over the sentiment with great confliction . to discuss it would mean letting that guard down , admitting hurt she'd buried so long ago . yet that need discuss it , to finally say her piece and be heard ? she couldn't deny herself that .
