What Can You Do About Sensitive Teeth?

Tooth Sensitivity refers to the feeling of discomfort or sudden, sharp pain when you eat or drink something sweet, hot, cold or sour.

In most cases they are a result of worn out tooth enamel or exposed tooth roots or in some cases could be a warning sign of a more serious dental problem.

Causes

When gums recede or pull back it exposes the dentin or the surface below which leads to sensitivity. Some common causes of sensitivity are

Brushing too hard may cause wear and tear of the enamel and expose the soft dentin beneath.

Dental erosion due to acid attack from foods and drinks that maywear away the enamel.

Gum disease may cause the gums to recede exposing the tooth root.

Teeth grinding or clenching may cause wear and tear of the enamel exposing the dentin.

A damaged tooth could be a hiding place for bacteria that may enter the pulp and cause decay. Likewise a cracked tooth may have a crack that runs from the top to the tooth root. When exposed to extremes of temperature it may cause discomfort.

Tooth whitening products may cause sensitivity for short periods.

Tooth Sensitivity Treatment in Mumbai

Application of desensitizing toothpaste may help reduce and block pain

Surgical gum graft by taking a piece of gum tissue from elsewhere in the mouth and attaching to the site where the gums have been lost.

If other treatments prove unsuccessful root canal treatment may be done that treats problems with the tooth pulp.

In order to maintain good oral health and prevent sensitivity from recurring you could follow these simple steps

Brush and floss regularly.

Use a soft bristled toothbrush.

Brush softly without removing the gum tissue.

Use fluoridated toothpaste and also one that controls sensitivity.

Avoid acidic foods and drinks.

Avoid teeth grinding. Use mouth guards if required

Visit your dentist atleast twice a year.
