The Truth About Hiring 'GREAT' Candidates
When looking for talent, there's two types of people you can hire. Responders and those that are proactive. Responders basically are people who are just waiting for things to happen.ย
So they just respond to stimuli, meaning there's a change perhaps in the laws, the tax laws, and then they take action.
But they're not proactive. Proactive people are basically people who go beyond what is expected. They take action beforehand and these people are highly valuable in an organization. These are the kinds of people you want to have on your team that they take the initiative without being prodded to do so or being told to do so.
The second characteristic you might want to look at when hiring somebody is the amount of energy they have. And when I say energy, I'm talking about two things here. One is you can observe their work stamina.
How much stamina do they have in the workplace? Can they work late hours? Do they have the strength and the energy and the drive to go that extra mile when you have a deadline or whatever needs to get taken care of?
And the initiative to do so on their own again without being asked to do so. The second is who do they hang out with? Do they hang out with the complainers and the gossipers and all that? Or are they hanging out with the winners and the successful people or perhaps people that are even more successful than them?
This will give you a great inside look into the person that you're hiring or looking at hiring or the person that maybe even works for you. The third thing to look at is a language. What kind of language do they speak?
What do they speak? I talk a lot about active listening and this is where active listening is really, really a critical component as a leader. When we listen to what people say, we can identify their fears and insecurities or their self -esteem or their lack of self -confidence or self -confidence that they have.
Perhaps beliefs can be identified and also identifying their biases. What are their prejudices or pre -beliefs about certain topics that might affect that project or affect your organization? All critical stuff to creating a high performance organization. The fourth item is curiosity. Are they curious about other people? Are they curious about the task of the project that they're working on? Do they ask good questions? Do they research on their own? Do they check things out on their own?
Or do they need to be asked every time to go do that? If they do these things, on their own, that's a really good sign because you have somebody there that is potentially an A player and somebody who takes that initiative to do the research and they're curious. And that's a sign also of proactivity. Now the fifth item that you might want to look at is can this person take criticism? If they can take criticism, you can train them. You can coach them and you can work with them and develop them to become even more effective team members or leaders within your organization.
So it's critical to see whether they can take criticism and grow from that experience. And the last thing that is really, really important is their character. Stevan Covey refers to it as the character ethic.
Can you trust them? Are they trustable? Are they loyal? Are they people who have your best interests at heart or at least generally have your best interests at heart? Or are they people willing to cut corners or do whatever necessary to get ahead of other people?
If it's that kind of person, it's probably not the right fit for your organization, at least not for a high performance team. You want people who have strong characters, a good character ethic, honesty, it's a critical component to any team being successful in the future.
So there you have it. You have won. responders, we have active listening that's so critical. Curiosity is really important. Taking criticism is very important and trust. These items encompass characteristics in somebody that you want to hire to add to your team to create a team of high performers.
