West Virginia legislators are trying to pass laws that discriminate against transgender and non-binary people. Legislators are also trying to ban gender affirming healthcare for transgender youth. Tell your representatives to end the discrimination and attacks on healthcare.
West Virginia law already requires minors receive a diagnosis of gender dysphoria from two medical or metal health providers before they can receive gender affirming medications. Additional restrictions and bans are excessive.
Gender affirming care reduces self-harm and suicide for transgender teens. Gender affirming care is literally life saving care that should not be banned for anyone.
Contact your representatives and tell them to vote no on these discriminatory bills.
House Bill 2006
Creates a narrow legal definition of gender and sex that is at odds with the complex and beautiful reality that we live in. HB2006 also bans transgender people from some public spaces and could be used to create more discriminatory laws.
House Bill 2033
Endangers LGBTQ+ youth in the foster care system and enables more discrimination.
Contact your house representative and tell them to vote no on House Bill 2006 & House Bill 2033
Delegate Jeff Campbell, 46th District (White Sulphur Springs)
(304) 340-3131
Delegate Ray Canterbury, 47th District
(304) 340-3129
Senate Bill 299
Amends and rewrites existing law to create a total ban on gender affirming care for teenagers.
Senate Bill 154
Bans teachers from teaching teens about sexual orientation or gender identity. Requires school employees report students who request accommodations that support their gender identity, such as changing their name or pronouns. Resulting in a possibly dangerous forced outing to the student's parents or guardians.
Contact your senator and tell them to vote no on Senate Bill 299 & Senate Bill 154
Senator Jack Woodrum, 10th District

Words Matter
There is something about how people talk about Donald Trump's speeches that has been bothering me for a long time.
You often hear people say things like, he doesn't really want to do that, he won't actually do that, or he can't do that. Then they proceed to support him and vote for him because they don't think he will be able to do the most extreme things he says he wants to do. That's really bad.
When you vote for someone, especially a president, you're not just voting for them; you're also voting for their message. To some extent, it doesn't matter if they can achieve their extreme agendas, it matters that you voted for them after they had stated their extreme agenda.
When Trump says, I want to terminate the Department of Education during his campaign, then you vote for him. That makes other politicians assume that is a message you support. They assume you want to end the Department of Education, even if you really don't. Maybe Trump won't be able to terminate the Department of Education, but someone else might. It becomes the message of the Republican party. More Republicans will push to end the DoEd now that they can claim that's what people want.
Another good example of this can be seen in what happened to Roe V Wade. It started with a few Republicans saying they wanted to overturn Roe V Wade. Many voters didn't agree with them, but they voted for them anyways because they agreed with them on most other issues. Then the message spread to more Republicans because people kept voting for politicians who said they supported overturning Roe V Wade. Eventually, the anti-abortion movement grew large enough that Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump were able to stack the Supreme Court in their favor and overturn Roe V Wade. If you vote for someone and don't speak out about the issues you disagree with them on, then politicians will assume you agree with everything they say.
I understand politics and voting is a comprise. Any politician you vote for probably has at least one stance that you don't fully agree with, so you comprise a little. Of course, you shouldn't compromise too much. For some reason, people seem willing to compromise far too much for Donald Trump. There are also good and bad ways to make a compromised vote. If you need to make a compromise on an important issue, then you speak out about it, loudly. Call or write your representatives and tell them that you don't agree with Trump's stance on your compromised issue. I don't think people are doing that.
If you don't think we should terminate the Department of Education, then you should call or write your representatives and tell them that. Especially if you voted for Trump. Don't let your representatives assume you support terminating the DoEd just because you voted for Trump. Do this for every issue that is important to you. Don't let them assume anything.
