The Village (2004 Movie)

I watched this psychological thriller cum horror movie this morning. I would say that the ending is rather unusual and the problem it addresses rampant. The inhabitants of a village have a pact with an entity (creature) residing in the woods, each having their own set boundaries. A crack appears in the glass of tranquillity of the villagers once the livestock is found dead frequently.

Ivy, daughter of the village Chief decides to go to the 'town' to fetch medicines for her lover/fiancee once he has been stabbed. Ivy is blind and yet takes on the journey with unparalleled courage.

The setting of the village is in the 1970s while the world across the woods is the present day era. The Village Elders back in their days decided to leave the world of greed, malice, treachery and murder. They cross over the woods, make it a wildlife preserve and bring their children up away from technology, materialism, avarice and malevolence. They concoct a story to keep the residents away from the woods and getting out to the real world.

The film is a reflection of the real world. There is no end to materialism. There is no end to greed and wants. We kill other species and even our own for our benefits. We have lost our humanity.

The movie is worth giving a try.

I recently went on a siblings trip to Goa and it included a handful of ‘firsts’. One of those first experiences was staying in an airbnb. Off season rates are cheaper and airbnbs are much better than hotels. I would recommend everyone to give it a try. We, Indians are reluctant to let go of our comfort zones but it can prove to be a great experience. Cheers!
