Year 11 Studio Arts Unit 2 Reflection and Evaluation : Outcome1
For this outcome, I think I worked more efficiently and with a better quality then for the past outcomes. In my own eyes I see that my standard of the quality of work has increased and my ideas and techniques have improved to create a better piece of work. What worked well for my in the planning and journey of this outcome was writing myself lists of ideas and thoughts to help me in developing an idea. Using a medium that I did know how to use and another that I was not so knowledgable about and was prepared to learn about the best ways to get my preferred outcome. Playing with the different ways of using the materials and what I could add to improve the aesthetics of the piece. I am pleased with my organisation of my work so I was able to complete two different series in two different materials in the time I was given. I am pleased that it worked well and looks similar to how I in visioned it. What really helped me prepare for this task was taking notes and ideas from around my surroundings to inspire me and prepare me to work off them to create a bigger idea.Taking photos of the moon helped me explore what I wanted to do. In the past I have already used watercolour and done some Lino cutting and printing before, but not embossing with a printing roller. It was a new experience for me and I was open to new exploration with it at one point wanting to embossing a photograph. Which was good idea creatively but practically it wasn't going to work. Something I tried to do in this folio was to consistently track my progress with photographs and test instead of leaving it all till the very end and cramming it all in. On a whole I am much happier with the presentation of my folio then for the past couple of folio tasks I've completed. The way I've been working though the work load and progressing in skills, ideas and materials. I really enjoyed working with different materials and ideas, especially ideas that inspire me. I found using images of things that I find pleasing to my eye and that I enjoy looking at helped me explore different areas and ways to depict my vision. There were a few ideas I had to explore materials but I never got around to trying them out, which is a shame but I can always try them out next year or some other time in the future. I did enjoy working with water colour paints again because it is a material that I know works and enjoy to work with. I hope that other people don't see it and respond to the pieces exactly the way I do, but I hope they connect and see their own interpretation of what they experience from the works. Next time I would like to do more colour tests and make sure I know how much water is needed to create the colour and intensity that I want, instead of guessing and making small mistakes. Mistakes do help the learning process but I would hope that it isn't on my future final pieces. In the future, I would like do some further embossing with water colour and maybe even both together. Over all I am very happy that my folio and pieces worked out well. I am feeling quite successful with it and feel like it has gone well. I haven't felt to stressed overall to complete the task well.

Left: Those photos show the process of how I created the lino print.
Right: I did some tests of the embossing and then added some water colour on top to see what difference it would make with some colour on it. In my opinion it doesn’t look as good.

These two photos show other tests of the embossing, it doesn’t show up in the photos but is meant to show the process of getting the weight of the rolling press even.

Left: After exploring and testing the circle shape with water colour, I proceeded to create 3 circles on larger paper. These originally going to be other tests but have become my final pieces. The pictures in the picture shown are showing the process and materials I used.
Right: Top pictures are of the three pieces that are nearly finished but still have masking fluid around. They also need to have the white gel pen added to them.

Left: I continued to experiment with water colour and masking fluid.
Right: This is the start of my exploration of the circle shape and the shape of the universe idea.

By using some masking fluid on the paper before applying the watercolour paint I was able to create a blank white circle. This was good but it needed a slight discolouration to the white to make it look a bit more realistic. After the paper had dried I lightly wet the paper Nd tried to emboss the moon shape out. This didn’t work very well because it had moved around a bit in the roller. It was a good exploration but it needed a some more precision and better execution. This could be a direction to work on and improve on.

Photograph on the left is a continuation of the watercolour testing. For the A4 piece, I completely soaked the paper with water on a flat bench before applying water. This worked well but the paper needed to be better quality to keep its beautiful state.

After experimenting with small Lino prints I tried out a larger one which is inspired by water, wind and the colourful galaxies in the universe. The fourth emboss is my favourite so far because the lines and shapes came up really beautifully. After exploring embossing I tried some water colour tests. I tried to keep them as organic and natural as possible to keep a natural feel to them. They are all done with watercolour paints on butcher paper.

After my first emboss I started to explore and experiment with overlapping different prints and watercolours.

On these pages I started thinking about different images to focus on and themes as well as start some embossing testing
My photographs of the moon inspired me to look into the colours of the sky. The photographs were taken though a telescope using my htc smart phone.
The first embossing went well and inspired me to continue on with the idea and explore it further.

Inspiration; the images that I've collected are all images that I enjoy looking at. An element that I really like is the use of circles.

The two artists I've chosen to include are two artists I found on Devintart, Crowandthefox and Carne Griffiths. Both artists have some element in common that I like.

Year 11 Studio Arts Unit 1 Reflection and Evaluation : Project 2 Theme : Surface
I think that I was successful in the this project, I feel relatively confident about it. In my opinion my thinking process worked well. The way I started with the idea of making roses with paper clay then working though many ideas of how to present them. The journey though theses ideas made me enjoy this project. The diverse methods of creating this piece was fun and challenged the things I usually do. These points are what have made this outcome positive and successful. I know this because I am happy with how it turned out. Going around and experiencing events, in my case this was going to the Melbourne garden and flower expedition. This triggered many new ideas and let me gather many photographs to reference off. That helped me develop a theme and direction. My direction demanded other and different materials to be used. This was an exciting adventure to learn how to use these materials and how they work best. This project combined both the delicacy of the roses and the messy, relaxed release of the vines. The rough, messiness of making the vines was very unlike what I am used too. This was a welcomed challenged and I enjoyed working working differently and more physically with the materials I chose. I found it very rewarding being able to manipulate the materials with my hands and working out solutions to problems that arose, such as not having an available washing line. This helped me improve my problem solving skills in a creative way. I used the Internet to help me research now to use particular materials Finding information and materials that were potentially relevant was a trial and error process. I tested and tried many different mediums using different techniques to find the best materials and techniques to apply them with. I started with many ideas that I could potentially work on but I narrowed it down as well as adding new ideas to the list. This helped figure out the best possible idea to use. It took a fair bit of thinking to decide which one would work best for what I am doing. This project this made me think out the box more and to solve problems that arise. By choosing to do something more diverse, it has refined my way of thinking. I created 26 handmade paper clay roses and needed to discover a way to present them in a way that it would showcase them as well as creating a nice piece of art. The idea of presenting on structure which has a sense of life brings alive my desired effect. If I was to simply just mount them on a white canvas it wouldn't of displayed as effectively. Next time if I had more time I would of made about double the amount of vines to create volume and more length. Overall I am pleased with my project and how it turned out. I have enjoyed playing and creating new surface with my project. I think the vines that I have made correctly present the idea of surface.

These two last pages are leading up to the final piece. The last steps was to stick the roses onto the vines with hot glue.
