Blackthorn Restaurant & Pub
Hey, guys! Welcome to my first review. As I’m sure most of you know, yesterday was National Chicken Wing Day. I know I said in my introduction that I was going to start with my top-5 when I started reviewing, but my dad suggested The Blackthorn for dinner yesterday which was fine with me. Anyone local to the South Buffalo area knows about The Blackthorn; great food, great atmosphere, and an all around feeling of being at home. I’m surprised when I walked in there yesterday I didn’t see at least one teacher from my high school, or at least one person i graduated high school with. Although I did see a friend’s aunt so I guess that’s close enough. The Blackthorn is a favorite of many people in South Buffalo and its super easy to see why. When you walk in there you’re greeted by a bar that makes you want to sit down and enjoy a Guinness with your neighbor, or maybe a stranger that becomes a friend after a few beers. The whole atmosphere is extremely inviting and it has such an old school charm to it. The owners recently remodeled the outdoor area with a new bar, more seating, fire pits, and classic backyard games. So after diving into one of their famous fish frys, or anything else that’s delicious on the menu, you can get yourself a nice cold beer and hang out with some friends after a long week at work. I would recommend to anyone looking for a new place to eat to absolutely find the time to head out there to grab a bite. It’s also a great place to go if you’re looking for a spot to celebrate Buffalo’s favorite holiday, St Patricks Day. Alright, lets get down to business here. At The Blackthorn you can order your wings traditional style (mild, medium, hot), or you can order them South Buffalo style. The best way I can describe South Buffalo style is medium sauce with a little extra kick and flavor. I’ve only had South Buffalo style at Blackthorn and Potter’s Field and I sometimes prefer that flavor over a more traditional style. I ordered a single order, South Buffalo style, extra crispy, with some extra sides of blue cheese. When the wings came out the presentation was excellent. The wings were stacked neatly on the plate which I can appreciate because I’m one of those people who thinks the way food looks when it comes out is very important. The wings were also hot when they got to the table so they weren’t sitting out long either which is always a plus. I took my first bite and let me tell you, if you’re a fan of bold, hot flavor, these are the wings for you. They pack a punch which forces you to take notice. Not only did I take notice of the flavor, I noticed that the meat was white and tender. There was hardly any fat on the wings which made them very easy to eat. I also noticed that consistency throughout all the wings I ate. Overall a very impressive wing, in my opinion. To add to my wing experience, the sides of blue cheese were very generous and the wings were a decent size. I only have a few things that I didn’t like about the wings. The first was that for me, the sauce was almost too much. I prefer the South Buffalo style taste that Potter’s Field offers. But that’s coming from me who typically doesn’t gravitate towards hot flavors. I would have also liked the skin to be a little bit crispier. Overall, the wings were great and I will order wings every time I head over to The Blackthorn for dinner. The rich South Buffalo history, the homey atmosphere, and the great wings will have me going back there for years to come. Thanks for stopping by to read this guys! And as always, always remember.. NEVER ranch, always blue cheese.

Happy National Chicken Wing Day! Here’s a picture of my wings from a month back from Bar Bill Tavern in East Aurora, NY. The flavor I chose for these particular wings was Cajun medium. Tonight I’m heading to a local bar, The Blackthorn, for dinner. I will be ordering wings, of course. I will write my review tonight or tomorrow.

The Introduction
Hey, all! My name is Ellen. I was born and raised in Buffalo, NY and I’ve just started becoming interested in writing. I’ve been thinking about doing this for a while and now is the perfect time to introduce myself to this. So please bare with me while I navigate this new world of blogging, lol. I think I can speak for everyone reading this that 2020 has been a major dumpster fire. I still can’t believe I forced myself to stay awake just for this year to turn out the way it did. I was ready to get this blog started when 2020 began but just as I was getting ready to start it, Covid-19 hit. Bars and restaurants were apart of the mass shutdown and getting take out wings isn’t the same as sitting down and eating them fresh from the kitchen. Now that New York is opening back up, I’m ready to get this blog started. I wanted the name of this blog to have something to do with the city that made chicken wings famous. Loganberry is a Buffalo staple and it has a very unique and delicious taste. It reminds me of summers at Crystal Beach growing up and the drink has an all around summer feel. So I turned that drink into a blog title that screams Buffalo.  One thing most people from Buffalo can agree on is their love of chicken wings. I’ve only met a few people, my fiancée included (big yikes), that don’t really care for them. For someone like me who loves going to new restaurants and bars to try wings, this blog was a perfect way to not only have a reason to eat one of my favorite foods, but to let readers know where to hit up next for a chicken wing dinner. This blog is not here to rank which wing place is better than another or to try and find Buffalo’s best wing, but it’s just to simply write about what wings I’m eating on a particular night and to give my opinion on what I like about them and how they taste. I’ll pick a place, I’ll eat my wings, then I’ll come home and write about them and give my opinion on how I thought they were. Pretty basic and simple. I put together a list of the top 5 places I’ve eaten chicken wings:
1. Doc Sullivan’s
2. Elmo’s
3. Bar Bill
4. Gabriel’s Gate
5. Mammoser’s
These are the places I’m going to start my blog journey, in no particular order. I know I’m guaranteed a delicious wing at every single one of these establishments. Let’s be honest though, you’ll always get a good wing no matter where you go in this city. I can only count two times where I had wings that were just down right nasty. It’s not a common thing. I will always take suggestions on where to hit up. My favorite part of this whole process will be trying new places so definitely hit up my inbox if you have any ideas. I hope you guys enjoy reading this blog as much as I will enjoy writing it :) and just a reminder... don’t EVER dip your wings in ranch. Blue cheese only.
