People are told to recycle and if they do, they often think problems are solved right after their trash gets into a proper recycle bin. This may be true for paper, glass, metal but not for plastic. Plastics are often downcycled into inferior products or sometimes recycled into different products with unintended consequences. - Reports say that 9% of all plastic produced was recycled, while 12% was burned and remaining 79% ended up in landfills or elsewhere (oceans, streets, you name it). - There are several reasons why plastic is not recycled. It starts with people reluctant to sort their waste, another problem is that not all plastic is profitable to recycle while making new is cheaper. In countries with high labor cost is it more economical to burn it while making electricity or heat. Long story short, plastic has many forms and characteristics that make recycling process complex and difficult. - Producers need to be responsible and products design needs to include recycling part - what will happen when product is consumed, broken or obsolete. - Depending on our consumer habits, we can shop more of less easily plastic free which is always the best.
