Dalang Stairs       May 2015
This May, ECS were invited by Handshake 302 to carry out an interesting painting project on the stairs of the Dalang Youth Dream Town in Longhua District. We started to paint on May 8th and participated the opening ceremony of Dalang Graffiti Festival on May 9th. Unfortunately the rainy season started and we had to postpone the mural painting a few times due to the bad weather. Eventually when the sun was shining on the last weekend of May and we had the time to complete the stair painting perfectly, with the help of many volunteers.
To create a better environment for the young people living in Dalang, the introduction of the stairs, inspired by the Shanghai Grand World, imagines the upper dormitory rooms are theater seats and the downstairs area as the center stage. It has since become the youth theater and performing arts center in the local area.

Guan Lan NEW WHO Project鳌湖艺术村项目       May 2014
The New Who group in Guan Lan is an artist village for contemporary art that embraces raw talent and innovative artistic creations. Paintings, live art, sculpture. ECS’s project includedthree manhole cover paintings and a large wall mural.
The theme for Phase Oneof the project was ‘Exploring New Who’. For the wall mural design, ECS Co-Founder, Zoe Latham, took inspiration from the old vernacular architecture around Guan Lan and chose key patterns and forms that were repeated around the village. These forms were then simplified in to their most basic of shapes and made into stencils. The forms were collaged back together to make a colourful, site specific and simple design that anyone could take part in.
The designs for the three manhole covers were very different as they were painted by multiple artists. One was based on the idea of water escaping the manhole cover, another transformed the manhole cover into magnifying glass which was a play on the exploration idea and the last was inspired by a crystal ball game.
“The New Who project went very well. The local villagers think it brings a freshness to their community.“Mrs Wang, the coordinator of New Who village, continued to say that “the multicultural experience and the participation of the volunteers is a great thing for the local people here. They will welcome and continue to support similar projects in the future.”

PROJECT PORTFOLIO
Guan Lan NEW WHO ART FESTIVAL OPENING CEREMONY           February 2015
ECS was invited back by New Who art village to join in the fun of the New Who Art Festival opening ceremony after the success of our first project.  We were asked to set up a group of volunteers to paint a long wall mural project throughout the opening day of the festival. With limited preparation time ECS managed to pull together ideas from volunteers and organizers combined. This community driven art project proved to bring people from all backgrounds together.
By making the most of existing wall conditions, we treated each tile as a pixel – allowing us to create simple and clean designs that everyone could get involved with. ECS volunteers engaged the local community and passers-by to join in and paint the pixels. Local children from New Who village showed great interest and passion during the project. Local TV networks covered the ECS project on the daily news.
