@eddiezpaghetti may i just express my biggest and sincerest gratitude for this masterpiece. it’s one of my all-time favorite steddie fics and i’ve read A LOT of them. the way it makes me giggle and kick my fucking legs… i literally started stimming from being so happy and excited during the confession scene and it wasn’t even the first time i’ve read it. it’s just so magical (pun fully intended) and heartwarming AAAAAARGH it makes me feel too much. and mom joyce is everything to me, as well as steve being an honorary byers. literally all the relationships between people in this fic are absolutely perfect and make my very soul combust.

i wish i had dreams about steddie like that. 10000000000000000/10, would recommend and AM recommending.

You're absolutely right that Byler/queerness is never a joke on ST, but what if it's just a story of unrequited love? What I mean is that I don't think it's either queerbaiting or Byler endgame. My fear is that they never meant for Mike to reciprocate, and what we see as evidence for Mike's feelings is in fact either accidental or just meant to show how much he loves Will... as a friend. That doesn't mean that they don't take this storyline very seriously. I feel like everything Mike did can be explained as friendship. So how are you so sure that he will reciprocate?

The short answer is: Because Mike and El aren't happening. I feel like I've gone into why well enough before. (Every scene Mike and El have over time becomes less about them and more about Mike and Will. Mike and El aren't really allowed to have character moments. The scenes that Mike and El do have together aren't positive. Mike and El parallel Nancy and Steve. Blah blah blah.) And frankly it'd just be weird to have a love triangle where the center character doesn't wind up with either. Also, Mike loves Will just...so much? As much as one could argue it's platonic, I feel like there's too much drama and conflict there to be just Bros Being Bros. Especially on Mike's part, internally. There's more strain the older they get, like Mike's afraid of what his affection for Will is turning into, so he's afraid of feeling it at all. But it's very much still there.

The long answer would go into a whole lot of little things that others have pointed out before me. And honestly, I feel like I went into the core of it pretty hard in my least popular meta. The one about contrasting Mike and El with Lucas and Max? Basically, basic storytelling cues. There's a path Mike and Will are following that Mike and El simply aren't. It's not even necessarily about how Mike thinks and feels and acts as an individual that makes me so sure, but how Mike-and-Will are presented in the story beats, in the cinematography, in the music cues. Mike-and-Will is its own character, and it's a romantic one.

I feel bad for people in bands who have falling outs bc imagine that one horrific coworker you have and then you quit the job and you’re so relieved to never have to work with them again. But then imagine that for the rest of your life the public never stops haranguing you to get back with that coworker and do one last report/audit/case/equivalent whatever just for old times sake. And you’re like wtf no I hate that guy. Want to check out my cool new job though? And everyone’s like no please make amends with that guy you hate from your old job. And it never lets up until one of you dies

Do people not realise that using Vecna tormenting Will about his complicated feelings towards El to make Will out to be a bad person who just hates her is literally exactly what Vecna does lmfao. That’s his whole MO—he digs into the character’s pain and twists things, convinces them their worst thoughts and fears are who they truly are, tries to make them succumb to the black hole of their trauma. He doesn’t reveal some secret dark evil truth in the person, he exploits their internalised suffering and tells them they are an awful person for it. I fear the point of the show went straight over some heads…….
