Peter held out his hand and Steve placed his hand demurely in it and walked with him into the restaurant. Peter had a business dinner that evening so Steve had opted for a nice navy suit, he knew in this industry it paid to look good so he always put a little money aside so that he had a few good outfits for work. He found a few good suits, some nice trousers or jeans with a good sweater or shirt and he was all set.

Peter wanted to make a good impression, he seemed calm and collected on the outside but he had been requesting Steve from the agency for the past two years and he knew the signs when he was nervous. He had been preoccupied the entire time they were together, had gotten Steve to triple-check their reservation at the restaurant and he could feel the slight clamminess to his hand. Steve squeezed his hand gently, Peter turned to him.

“You look very distinguished tonight.”

Peter smiled at him.

“Nobody’s going to be looking at me when I have such a beautiful Omega by my side.”

The door closed behind him with an audible click. All the men seated around the long table that took up most of the room turned in his direction causing his face to heat with humiliation. Billy’s gravelly voice rang out through the room.

“C'mere Bunny.”

He looked up and saw him patting his thigh and Steve wanted nothing more than to sink into the ground as the men averted their eyes. Bunny. He hated that word with every fibre of his being especially when said in that mocking way that Billy said it. He used to be able to ignore it with a quick rolling of his eyes and an acknowledgement in his direction. Even if Billy made his blood boil he knew better than to cross him. No one crossed Billy and lived to tell the tale. He hadn’t needed anything from him then but unfortunately for Steve that would all change.

So he should have been used to it by now but for some reason that Thursday afternoon he wasn’t prepared for how hard Billy would hit him. He lost his balance and landed heavily on his right side.

He had winced as he felt his arm bend at a funny angle under his body but he had jumped straight back up and pursued the ball. He had only taken a few steps before the pain ran through his body and he felt dizzy with nausea. Billy’s usual smirk had slid off his face as he looked at him. His attention was riveted to his arm. Soon the coach was called and Steve found himself enroute to the hospital.

Steve could feel the eyes following him from the shadows as he walked across the dimly lit room towards the bar in the corner. The sound of the worn leather creaking on the ancient bar stool seemed to echo through the room. He carefully rolled up his sleeves until the still healing cuts just above his wrist were visible and waited. It didn’t take long.

The Pearlo was a makeshift bar in a dilapidated building on the outskirts of town but it was well known to anyone with a heartbeat and enough desperation to make themselves known. Steve had discovered it almost by accident when he felt as though everything in his life was spiralling out of control. His parents forgot he existed until it was convenient for them and then they felt they could control every aspect of his life. He would graduate later this year and he had money hidden in the back of his closet. He didn’t like to think too hard on how he’d acquired it but he was grateful he at least had something that his dad couldn’t throw back in his face. He would never know about it or how he’d got it.

Steve laughed as Ryan mimicked the player from the opposing team fumbling the ball. It had been a good game for them. Their coach was pleased and they’d gained a lead in the championship. Just two more games and the trophy would be theirs. It had been a few years since Hawkins had hosted the trophy and he felt a warm, heavy pride in his stomach that he would be the captain who would lead them to victory. If only everyone treated him like the captain and listened to him they might have an even bigger lead.

Ryan clinked his beer against his and they had a moment of quiet contemplation. He sighed softly. Everything had seemed so bleak only a short while ago but some people had stuck by him and it had helped restore the confidence he’d had before. He glanced across the room to where Nancy was tucked securely into Jonathan’s side. His heart didn’t even quicken. There was no longer a sharp sting, not even a twinge of pain remained.

Billy Hargrove had learned to face every challenge with his fists and his teeth. He thought moving to Hawkins would be easy, a couple more years and he could leave everything behind. That was until he saw Steve Harrington and Billy never wanted a challenge so bad.

It was one of his earliest memories. His mom lovingly told him about the first time he’d bitten her finger. He didn’t even have teeth, just irritated gums and determination. He’d chewed his way through every pacifier he ever had and left indents in all his toys and anyone not quick enough once he’d learned how to crawl. She told him it was a family trait as his grandmother had been homeschooled for the first few grades as she’d been a biter too. He’d felt so embarrassed but a little fascinated especially because his mom looked back on it so fondly. Once his gums had calmed and he had all his teeth his need to bite had died away. It was only a distant memory told by his mom when she would reminisce about what a cute chubby cheeked terror he had been.

A few months after she’d gone he would have done anything to hear more embarrassing stories. Even when she did talk to him every few months over the crackling connection on the old beat-up phone there was no time for happy memories. There was barely any time at all. He would beg her to come get him. His voice was so small and pathetic but she would placate him with promises of later but she never came. Over time his frustration grew. It felt like a raging fire that he couldn’t contain until one day it spilt out as he sunk his teeth into another kid’s hand.

Billy stretched out his tired aching limbs and walked in through the door to the small cottage he shared with his dad. It was located just inside the gates to Harrington’s sprawling estate and would be a perfect home for anyone. Billy tended to stay in his room unless he was needed. They usually worked in shifts unless something drastic was needed to be done but it was mostly just maintenance work. He usually made their meals in advance because as soon as his dad was finished for the day he would grab himself a cold beer and sit in the chair in front of the TV. After a few he could become mean and demanding so it was easier to just heat something through.

Billy had spent all day sorting out the guest house’s pool and garden. Steve was coming home and Mrs Harrington wanted everything to be perfect. His stomach twisted with anticipation for the younger Harrington’s return. They were roughly the same age but their lives couldn’t be any more different. Billy had been dragged along by his dad for his whole life. He knew how to fix an engine by the time he was twelve. His dad taught him everything he knew about maintenance work and by the time he was fifteen, they’d arrived at the Harrington’s estate.

He was a man who had once demanded respect and even now in his desperate state, he understood a show of power. Billy knew he could fix the business but he wanted full control. Smith would only get in the way. He slid the contract across the desk. He knew it was a good offer but desperate men held on for every crumb. It wasn’t even about the money. It was about saving face.

“I dunno Mr Hargrove, there is another interested party.”

“What are they offering?”

“A very competitive offer.”

Billy smiled. He’d done his due diligence and knew that Smith had demanded too much and burned every bridge in the process. He slid his hand under the desk and pressed the little white button he’d installed. He shifted in his seat as anticipation built under his skin. The door behind him opened and he heard footsteps walk up behind him. He watched Smith’s reaction. His eyes widened slightly before they travelled over the person standing there. Billy didn’t turn around; he knew what Smith was seeing. Steve Harrington looked like he’d stepped off the runway in a perfectly cut suit with his hair styled to perfection.

Steve checked to make sure the little red light was still flashing to indicate the camera was still on as he smiled sweetly into the lens. He dimmed his lights slightly. He could just make out the messages flying across the screen that he knew were desperate pleas for him to stay on a little longer. He crawled across the floor feeling the silky panties he was wearing stretch and the vibrations from the butt plug made him shiver. It had been a good night and he’d put on one of his best shows in months but he was tired and it was always best to stop while you were ahead. Steve had insisted that it was the only way they could be together. They had to maintain a rivalry between school and basketball so everyone thought they couldn’t stand each other. That way they could have all the time they wanted in secret because no one would ever suspect them. Billy knew he was right; it was dangerous, especially in a small town where everyone had nothing but time. He couldn’t afford another incident like California. He enjoyed their back and forth, mainly because it was a secret way to tease Steve in public. To watch his eyes go a little hazy, a delicate flush on his cheeks as he nervously licked his lips.

His favourite thing was to press up against his back when they played basketball and while everyone else was focused on the ball he would press his fingers into the bite mark he’d left the night before. Steve would tense like a deer in headlights, a small gasp under his breath as he got lost for a moment in how it got there. Billy would press a little harder, feeling Steve shiver under his fingertips then he’d ruthlessly steal the ball.

Steve had been in love many times. He remembered every single time his heart had started that rhythm that made it feel like it was going to beat out of his chest. He’d feel clumsy in his skin, he was light as a balloon and just wanted to be with the other person every waking hour. He’d think about them and smile. Have butterflies in his stomach and be giddy with excitement just thinking about holding their hand. Being popular had its drawbacks as he was expected to be a certain way and he’d had his fair share of meaningless flings but even though he’d never admit it to Tommy they left him feeling cold. Steve hadn’t grown up admiring or wanting to be the hero in the stories his mom had read to him. He hadn’t been interested in superheroes or suave secret agents; he’d been more interested in love stories. His mom had stopped reading to him when he’d been around three and he’d found himself in the care of Amelia.

His fingers creaked as he carried boxes into the house on cherry lane. He could feel a mix of dread and excitement in the pit of his stomach. In California, he loved when the moon was full and he could finally be free. There was land near their home where he could roam. Bask in the moonlight. He had to find new hunting grounds in Hawkins.
