Autumn Palace, Dongjing, Xing. August 19th, 1917.
Hello, Edward, how are you?
I hope things are well over there in Amestris and that yours and Al’s recoveries have been swift and steady, like a warrior’s hand. The news of Grumman’s ascension and Colonel Mustang, or rather, General Brigadier Mustang’s help to Ishval’s rebuild have reached me and I have to say I am happy that things are slowly getting better over there, my friend. When we left Amestris, part of us were worried of what would happen now that that evil was revealed, even if we were sure that you would be able to win every thing destiny threw your way.
Although this may not be of your interest, I wanted to tell you that I have been chosen as my father’s heir. It came as a surprise to many of my siblings, who know not of what I discovered in your country and will not know. My father, for his part, has shown no interest on replicating the conditions necessary to make a philosopher’s stone and it’s both a relief and a surprise, for personal reasons. Still, I think you would be happy to know that Xing will not be partaking on any activities and that the secret of the philosopher’s stone will be buried with me, Mei and Lan Fan, for they both promised not to use or comment about it.
It’s a relief to be back home and to be able to bury Fu’s body with all the honour and glories due to a honourable warrior like him. Lan Fan didn’t cry at the burial, nor did I, but we had enough time to process our grief on our way here, do not worry. We are doing our duties, we are trying to move on, slowly and surely, and not let our grief take the best of us. Besides, I just know that the old man would kill us if he knew we cried for him and let something as weak as feelings win over us.
Lan Fan’s automail is quite well, even with the slowly appearing cold in Xing. She wants to let both Misses Rockbell know that she is taking the best care of it, cleaning and oiling it dutifully every night. Even I have been recruited to help her with it when she is too tired to do it alone or it needs something more. Maybe, some time soon, we will have to visit you so that they can have a look on it before my father passes away.
Mei, despite already writing a letter to Alphonse, wants me to tell you that there’s no hard feelings towards you from her part. She also wants me to tell you that it’s not because Alphonse is obviously superior to you, in both mind and stature, that you do not have your own value and that you will find someone to yourself. She, unfortunately, is just not that someone.
All of the other things are alright and slowly progressing and I’m glad to be home once more though I miss the meals you used to buy me back in Rush Valley. One day, you will have to buy me more of those and, maybe, in return, I will show you some of my favourite xingese dishes.
Sincerely, your dear friend,
The Twelfth Prince of Xing,
Ling Yao.
P.S.: Mei was watching over my shoulder as I wrote her part on this letter and wouldn’t leave until I wrote everything she wanted. Please, know that I do not agree with most of what she said.

Winter Palace, Huangjidi, Xing. September 25th, 1917.
Have you been treating the nurses, my friend? Please, don’t tell me you have already scared them away.
I’m glad my first letter found you well, Edward, and that you liked the diagrams and engineering plans I sent you. I thought you would be happy to have something to distract you during your recovery and stand now. I also hoped that it would help you find your footing again, now that you no longer have your alchemy. And I’m happy to know that yours and Al’s recovery are going quite well, and that Miss Rockbell is closely watching you both. Only heavens know what you would do if left unsupervised.
Xing’s winter is only starting, indeed, but, please, tell Misses Rockbell to not worry about Lan Fan’s automail. We are taking good care of it and having the uttermost caution not to damage it in any way. She says that she is flattered by the worry, but that it is unnecessary given her line of work. I have tried to tell her that is nonsense, but she doesn’t seem to have heard me.
Mei was enraged with your response to her message, but I won’t tell you what she said or what she told me to write to you, both because of length and because I am tired of being a messenger to her. If you two wish to keep exchanging unpleasant messages, she will have to write it herself. I no longer will do it.
Anyways, I’m happy to know that you will be taking some time off after leaving the hospital and going back to Resembool, my friend. After coming back home, I have personally noticed how easy breathing seems to be when you are surrounded by familiarity. I believe it will be good for you, to rest for a while and stay at your childhood home. Even if most of us spent a lifetime trying to run away from it, the past does hold some of the answers we seek on the present.
These last weeks have been fairly slow, with all the attention turned towards my father’s declining health and what will happen after his death. I may have been nominated his successor, but it’s no guarantee that I will truly be it. Xing’s politics seem, unfortunately, to be more complicated that those of Amestris, even if the people’s inclinations to solve things with their own hands seem to be identical.
But, don’t worry about me. Everything will be alright in the end and nothing bad will come in my way. I have been dealing with all of this during my whole life, Edward, and I didn’t think it would change when I finally got what I wanted. I have fought hard for all of this and no one will take it from me before I have done what I promised.
I know I sound awfully like Greed did, but I have accepted that I will forever sound like him now. That homunculus changed me more than I thought, but I’m not angry by that, not much, at least. It’s a way of assuring he will still be here after his death, that, in some way, he will get what he wanted. So, don’t worry about me, my friend, I’ll be alright in the end.
Hoping you too will be alright,
Your friend,
The Twelfth Prince of Xing,
Ling Yao.
P.S.: I’m hurt by the idea that you wouldn’t buy me dinner, so I’ll ignore you refused to do so and say that yes, you will buy me dinner next time we see each other. I don’t accept a refusal for answer.

Winter Palace, Huangjidi, Xing. October 30th, 1917. (Unsent)
I don’t know if the news already arrived to Amestris. I don’t think they did, given it was only a few days ago, but my father is dead, Ed. The old man died on his sleep, after spending hours speaking with me about what would happen with him gone. He died and left so many things for me to solve, so many people in need of help. He promised so much and he broke every single one of them.
I was never close to my father, Edward, but I had respect for the idea of him. A respected Emperor, a man that could hold the weight of a nation and numerous wives on his hands and not break. For me, and most of the nation, the Emperor was larger than life, he was life itself. A living god, a breathing legend.
My father didn’t bow his head to anyone, he got what he wanted and did as he pleased until the end. No one could convince him of doing what he didn’t want to, not even his most beloved siblings.
And, now, I’m supposed to step in that man’s shoes. I’m supposed to be everything that he was and more. I’m supposed to be the better version of him, I’m supposed to care for my own clan without forgetting anyone else. How does one do that, Edward? How does one surpass a legend? How does one to something that only a god could?
I have studied for this exact moment during my entire life, but it all seems to evade me now. I don’t know if I understand enough of the clans’ politics or if I am truly fitted to talk about the agricultural expanses with my ministers. Do I really know enough of the other countries’ politics to make good deals for my country with them? Am I prepared enough for any of this, Edward?
I wish you were here, with me. You would know what to do, I’m sure. You would know how to get me out of these thoughts, you would know the exact brash words to say to me to snap me out of it. For my part, I would know I was not alone in this huge compound and killing spree. I would know I could rely to you, I would know I was safe with you here.
I miss you, Edward, and your stupid jokes and kind heart and beautiful laughter. I miss the way you always stopped in your way to help a stranger and how nice you were to kids, and I don't think I should miss you as much as I do. I don't think I should want to have you here as much as I do. I don't think I should tell you as much as I do.
But I do, I do, I do, and I don’t know why.
Fully yours,
The Twelfth Prince of Xing,
Ling Yao.

Winter Palace, Huangjidi, Xing. November 29th, 1917.
Thank you for your condolences, Edward. My father was a sick man, especially on his old age, but he died peacefully on his sleep. The burial and funeral preparations are almost done and it should happen soon, before the winter cold is too strong.
I am alright, do not worry. We were all prepared for this situation and what would come after and Lan Fan is consistently at my side. Nothing bad is going to happen, I promise. You do not need to come to Xing or anything like that, not when you are still rebuilding your life and starting a new career. Tell everyone else not to worry as well, that everything is fine.
With gratitude,
The Twelfth Prince of Xing,
Ling Yao.

@edling-week '25 day 1 - bridge / letters / impulse
the ides festival doubling as a birthday celebration really brings out the gay after realizing you're both tied to the structure of your world's existence, huh.
(set the day of this post, takes place after a fic to be released on day 4 covering those events)

Edling week - day 1 - bridge
Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet, Till Earth and Sky stand presently at God's great Judgment Seat; But there is neither East nor West, Border, nor Breed, nor Birth, When two strong men stand face to face, though they come from the ends of the earth! © The Ballad of East and West by Rudyard Kipling
