Beyond Discounts: Unpacking the Drawbacks of Black Friday and Navigating a Fashionable Boycott
1. Environmental Impact:
Delving into the environmental repercussions of Black Friday's frenzied shopping culture, my academic knowledge has always tried its best to stop me from buying. The intricate web of ecological challenges posed by Black Friday's shopping spree is a well-studied subject in the hallowed halls of academia. The academic knowledge acquired in courses on sustainability, environmental science, and ethics becomes a guiding light, urging restraint in the face of consumerist urgency. The clash is not merely between products and prices; it's a clash of principles, a battle between the responsibility instilled by education and the impulsive desire to partake in the shopping frenzy.
2. Worker Exploitation:
youtube
Behind the glamorous façade of fashion lies a human cost that often goes unnoticed. Garment workers, predominantly situated in developing countries, bear the brunt of the fast fashion phenomenon. The academic knowledge surrounding labor rights and ethical considerations collides with the consumerist urgency that Black Friday instigates.
3. Overconsumption and Waste:

In the wake of Black Friday's whirlwind shopping spree, the desire to acquire won, leading me down a path of indulgence that translated into thousands of dollars spent on fashion treasures. However, as the initial excitement fades, a tidal wave of guilt crashes over me, emanating from the realization of the waste generated by my impulsive purchases. In this candid reflection, I unravel the conflicting emotions that accompany post-Black Friday guilt and explore the transformative journey toward mindful consumer choices.
4. The Illusion of Savings:
Black Friday, with its dazzling displays of discounts, creates a mirage of unparalleled savings. The allure of significant price reductions often blinds consumers to the intricate web of factors that contribute to the true cost of the items they eagerly snatch up. This illusion requires us to look beyond the price tags and question the actual value we receive.
In the landscape of academia and beyond, a new term has emerged— "Girl Math (read more on why it is toxic here). It's not a mathematical concept, but rather a symbolic expression that somewhat encourages the mindset of blissful ignorance. It doesn't imply a lack of capability but rather a deliberate choice to navigate financial matters with a carefree and optimistic outlook, leaving the complexities of budgeting and saving behind.
"Girl math" is fun to look at. But the more we think about it, the more we acknowledge how spontaneous we are when it comes to shopping. Using it, we ignore the fact that we "don't save at all", however spend more money on capitalism.
5. Mindful Fashion Alternatives:
Fashion Capsule Wardrobe Guide:
In the labyrinth of fashion, where the drawbacks of impulsive shopping cast a shadow, a beacon of mindful alternatives emerges. Let's traverse the path from the pitfalls of fast fashion to actionable solutions, with a focus on the transformative concept of a capsule wardrobe. Embracing fewer, high-quality pieces over an abundance of fast fashion items, the journey advocates for a shift towards conscious and intentional fashion choices.
Conclusion:
Boycotting Black Friday, especially for fashion enthusiasts, is a nuanced decision rooted in a commitment to ethical consumerism. By understanding the drawbacks, acknowledging the complexities, and embracing mindful alternatives, we can redefine our relationship with fashion—one that aligns with our values and contributes to a more sustainable industry.

"Roots in resilience"
The lecture halls become a battleground of ideas, where discussions on media ethics, representation, and the responsibility of content creators fuel the fire of my social justice endeavors. Each class becomes an opportunity to challenge the status quo, to question narratives that perpetuate injustice, and to seek out voices that need amplification.
The threads of academia and activism intertwine as I delve into research projects exploring media's impact on marginalized communities. From the role of social media in activism to the portrayal of diversity in mainstream media, my academic pursuits become a tool for deconstructing and reconstructing narratives.
My background speaks a lot about me– I'm a young female immigrant from Vietnam to Canada for academic pursuits. I had spent all my adolescence witnessing inequality and environmental constraints as a citizen of a third-world country. Driven by a profound desire to delve into social justice, I have always longed to get a minor or at least some certificate in the field.
The decision to leave the familiar behind and traverse oceans and continents was daunting and liberating. It was an odyssey to seek knowledge, to break the shackles of limitations, and to breathe life into my dreams of becoming an activist. Vancouver became the canvas where my aspirations would be painted with the vibrant hues of academia and advocacy.
While Vancouver may not be universally hailed as a shopping haven, for me, it's a paradise of possibilities. The cityscape transforms into a runway, with boutiques and malls offering a kaleidoscope of choices that cater to diverse tastes. As a young female teen navigating the corridors of identity, shopping becomes a canvas on which I paint the hues of self-expression. Such brands like Aritzia, which can only be found in Canada, offer a diversity of sizing, perfect for a curvy girl like me, something that I could never find in Vietnam.
As the doors of Aritzia swing open, each garment becomes a chapter in the story I tell through my fashion choices. Selecting an outfit becomes a ritual—a way to express my identity, celebrate my femininity, and embrace the confidence that emanates from wearing pieces that resonate with my soul.

With its diverse fashion landscape, Vancouver provides the backdrop for my style evolution. From Gastown's chic streets to Yaletown's upscale boutiques, each neighborhood becomes a treasure trove of fashion possibilities. It's not just about purchasing; it's about curating a collection that narrates the chapters of my life.
In the kaleidoscope of my identity, the next chapter unfolds with the gentle dance of contradictions. As a wannabe activist, I navigate the realms of sociology and social justice. Yet, here I am—a fashionista reveling in the joy of diverse outfits, walking a path where the love for fashion seems to contradict the mindset of an activist. In this harmonious contrast, both aspects converge, forming the tapestry of my happiness.
As the chapter concludes, the narrative of duality continues to weave through the tapestry of my story. Join me in the next installment, where the journey of embracing contradictions unfolds further, and the threads of identity intertwine unexpectedly. 🌈👠📚
