I would 100% recommend this book to everyone of any age or gender! This book will make you feel like you’re one of the characters and take you through a journey. These star-crossed lovers showed me a whole new spectrum of what it is like to love someone and all the emotions included. My only complaint would be that the author has not yet published the sequel of this book, I will feel complete when Eleanor and Park grow up and are able to be together!

This sudden emptiness could be felt through the characters as they return to their old lives and have to only cherish the time they ever got to have together. Park sent her letters after letters and there was never a response because Eleanor could not bring herself to read them or send one back. On Park’s prom night, Park’s dad brought him a postcard from Eleanor and the author says there were three words on it. The author leaves the three words to your imagination. What do you think Eleanor might have said?

When Park walked Eleanor up to the door and they said their goodbyes for the last time, they both did not know if they would ever see each other again. This scene was tear-jerking and was one of the most saddest scenes in the book. Their connection and love was so deep but their love had to be separated because of family, showing their fate as star-crossed lovers. What was even more sad was the fact that through the last hours they had with each other, their emotions for each other climaxed and was heightened more than they ever were before.

Richie, Eleanor’s abusive step-father is a nightmare and ends up being the culprit of the anonymous, sexual comments written on her books. As Eleanor finds out and decides that no longer she can stay at this house, she asks Park to help her. Park ends up sneaking out and driving her all the way to Minnesota, where Eleanor’s uncle lived, because this was her only escape.

The representation of the characters were also eye-catching as Eleanor was seen as much bigger than Park and she was portrayed as more masculine due to her preference of clothing. While Park talks about how he feels empowered when he wears heavy eye shadow and eyeliner, which is generally seen as a more feminine trait. The theme of gender-neutrality was evident throughout the book and kept it unique.

This book grasps the idea of young romance and love where they love each other so much but their circumstances causes separation. The style of this novel includes interchanging from Park and Eleanor’s perspective, showing their own personal feelings and different opinions. Personally, this style helped me to have a thorough understanding of the characters and their different lifestyles.

This quote was said by Park after Eleanor had explained to him that there are many ways to be expressive other than your physical appearance. Eleanor may have not been physically portrayed as good-looking but she made Park feel something. She did not want to look like everyone else but rather be different.

I have enjoyed this book thoroughly because of the author’s way of writing. She has made the dialogue and the different scenarios to reflect high school students and was able to portray teenagers that sounded like teenagers, although this book actually took place in the 1980’s. I also enjoyed that it was fairly straight-forward and how each chapter impacted the story heavily. This novel absorbs the readers into the scenarios and you will most likely feel like one of the characters by the end of the book!

This quote is one of my favorite! It really captures Eleanor’s feelings of vulnerability from all the abuse she has suffered and her poor economic status. It took her a while to open up to Park about her even messier life at home. She imagines that if she were to tell him everything, he would run away and because of that fear, she hesitated to open up. I am sure that there are many people in this world who feel vulnerable to their partners about parts of their life and this quote shows the desire for acceptance and healing.

Their love for comic books turned into a love for each other!

Park started making mix tapes for Eleanor for all the songs she always wanted to listen and let her borrow his Walkman.

Many themes exist in this novel, but the ones that stand out the most are love, fate, abuse and gender-neutrality. The title of this book, Eleanor and Park, supposedly came from Romeo and Juliet. It explains the scenes of Eleanor and Park reading Romeo and Juliet for their English class. After reading both, I realized that there are similarities and reoccurring themes and ideas. Thankfully, this pair of star crossed lovers chose a route of survival than suicide.

Park owns a Walkman and many Watchmen and X-men comic books and on the bus he noticed that Eleanor was peeking over his shoulder which led him to open the book more to her direction, so that she can read as well. This initially started their connection, leading to an entire relationship that they did not expect to occur.

Eleanor & Park was an emotional roller coaster ride where I was squealing with joy, then sobbing out of anger and then falling in to a state of depression. Basically, it was not boring at any time of the story and had my attention for over 3 hours straight to finish reading it. Eleanor Douglas, an overweight red-head and Park Sheridan, a skinny Asian boy, are two teens in the City of Omaha, who are socially isolated, dysfunctional and are known as outsiders. They meet on the bus for the first time by Park giving up the seat beside him after a moment of internal confliction.
