Greta Van Fleet at the Paramount in Seattle, WA.
photos and review by Eva Burns
The rain had begun to fall on a winter’s evening in Downtown Seattle, yet that wasn’t stopping the fans forming to see the wondrous Michigan Rock band Greta Van Fleet. The line was already down the street and around the corner, all waiting patiently (and some stoned, if I may say so) to enter the grand doors of Seattle’s famous Paramount Theater. Some die hard fans had been waiting in line as early as 9 AM that morning to get access into the band’s first of two sold out shows. To be at a Greta show is quite the experience, not only for the return of bluesy classic rock and roll sound that they are known for, but also for the diverse audience of older adults reliving there rock and rock glory days. Many folks are incredibly excited to see the return of pure rock, within today’s limited selection of radio-friendly formulaic rock bands.
As the doors quickly opened on time, the fans hurried in to escape the rain. Shortly after the opening band Ida Mae took the stage, starting off the evening with some heavier acoustic, british blues and Americana influenced rocking Nashville vibes. After a short set, Greta took the stage and wasted no time, getting the theater riled up with “Highway Tune” and then “Edge of Darkness”, both classics that got the crowd singing along wildly. Josh Kiszka spoke once or twice throughout the evening to ignite more character before a song would start, or to tell a short tale and set your mind spinning before beginning another song. However, much of their material speaks for itself, with the intense guitar, bass, drum and vocal riffs.
Since the boys last and first headlining tour, they have skyrocketed up the charts and made marks all over the world with their music. Brothers Josh Kiszka (vocals), Sam Kiszka (bass / organ), and Jake Kiszka (guitar) along with friend Danny Wagner (drums) seemingly came out of nowhere and have quickly risen since the release of there EP Black Smoke Rising and now there debut album, The Anthem of the Peaceful Army. Laying a solid foundation of blues based rock for themselves by touring extensively, they’ve gained the attention of many old rock fans and even big named rock stars, such as Robert Plant, Elton John, and Dave Grohl. Starting off the new year with several grammy nominations, it appears that the early success the band has enjoyed is only going to increase this year, and they have an incredibly bright future ahead of them.
