   he sounds so nonchalant— collected, unconcerned. it reminds her of all the times he had done similar things when they were children. she could recall all the times she’d seen him lingering at the gate once the bell rang, insisting he wasn’t waiting there— wasn’t walking her home because of anything other than the convenience of them living in the same direction. she slows slightly, falling into pace beside him and offers him a gentle smile. “ well, er— thanks all the same. ” she says sincerely, drawing her jacket a little closer around her frame. eli had always been kind, even as kids, though she knows he simply passes his thoughtfulness off as coincidence. it reminds her a lot of alex, now that she thinks about it— she can see why they’re best friends, both of them sharing similar qualities at times. “ n-no, erm— ” she stammers the second the suggestion leaves him, voice coming out perhaps a little too quickly as her cheeks begin to burn. “ n-no.. it was just— erm, curiosity. that’s all. no one’s said much about seating arrangements— or if we’re all even on the same flight. ” she knew some would be boarding with them, but had yet to ask daejung or jane or anyone else. “ are you.. excited ? ” 

––––– the way jade reacted to his innocent question sent alarm bells ringing inside eli’s head. he quirks an eyebrow and lets jade stumble over her words with an amused smile. “curiosity, huh?” he teases, drawing the ‘huh’ out for extra effect. teasing jade is second nature to eli—although he makes sure not to overstep or say anything that would actually upset her. frankly, eli doesn’t exactly know why jade suddenly lost the ability to speak, or why her face had flushed in an instant, but he can make an educated guess. since he’s a good friend, however, he doesn’t push it. it was none of his business, anyway. “doesn’t matter whether i’m sitting one hundred feet away from alex, i’m going to go bother him. maybe the flight crew will let me sit on his lap if i beg for it.” it was mostly a joke—eli’s a thousand percent certain that alex is going to push him off the aircraft if he pulled that stunt. “i mean, i’m excited, yeah... but... not that much? i haven’t even finished packing yet... how ‘bout you? you excited?”

     “     bro,  I  DARED  YOU …  are  you  a  pussy  or  something  ?     “  again,  he  takes  the  caffeinated  drink  into  his  lips,  big  eyes  looking  at  his  best  friend.  because  no  matter  HOW  MUCH  he  wanted  to  deny  it,  the  STUPID,  MORON  ASSHOLE  in  front  of  him   was  his  best  friends.  and  this  same  best  friend  ?  was  on  the  edge  of  his  building.  something  about  WE  CAN’T  LIVE  WITHOUT  DARREN  due  to  the  trip  to  actually  CLIMBING  DOWN  THE  SIDE  OF  THE  BUILDING  as  a  dare.  sometimes  their  conversations  made  no  sense.  sometimes  their  brains  ?  went  blank,  simply.  alex  was  TOO  USED  to  pain  to  care  and  elijah  ?  was  just  dumb.  his  brows  rise  as  half  his  face  disappears  behind  his  coffee  cup  “     WHILE  YOU  DECIDE  IT’S  WORTH  BEING  CALLED  A  PUSSY  FOR  THE  REST  OF  YOUR  LIFE,  i  need  to  ask  you  something  for  the  rest  of  the  trip.  like  bro  to  bro,  i  really  need  you  to  step  up.     “

–––––  “i’m not a pussy,” eli snapped, indignant. no, he wasn’t a pussy. he was just internally debating whether or not it was worth it to climb down a fucking four-storey building. despite his argument, eli remained by the edge of the rooftop, staring down at the intimidating view of the cement. if he slipped and fell, would he die? or would he be able to walk it off with a few broken bones? his knees were wobbling, but he’s not going to back out of a dare, not in a million years. he’s going to fucking do this, with the help of darren-brewed coffee.

yes, eli thought to himself, he’s doing this for darren. he won’t be seeing darren for a while, and he was going to dedicate this dare to darren. 

in darren, he trusts. 

his train of thought was cut short at alex’s request. he turned to alex, his eyebrows raised. “what is it, bro?”

   jade watched as twilight kisses the sky goodbye — purples, pinks and a splash of orange flirting with the first touch of blue before withering away into the darkness. she had always loved autumn, but she doesn’t love how dark it gets now. it’s hardly five, but the sun has already tucked itself in for the night. “ you didn’t have to walk me home, eli. ” she says softly, trailing a few steps behind him. an odd coincidence that she’d met him near the intersection of blissy’s place on her way home from the station, but she hadn’t thought all too much about it. “ .. but thank you. hopefully it’s not too out of your way.. ? were you heading home.. ? ” he hadn’t said much before falling into step beside her a few minutes ago, but eli didn’t often strike up conversation unless he was teasing her. “ uhm— the trip is coming up soon… “ she trails off for a second before continuing, “ … are you going to sit with alex on the plane? ”

–––––  it wasn’t that eli had nothing else to do—actually, he still had a broken motorcycle waiting for him in the shop, but it was getting dark outside despite the fact that it was only a quarter to five. jade mentioned something about heading to bliss’s apartment and he knew full well that a woman walking alone around that area was dangerous, unfortunately. eli knew jade was capable of protecting herself, but his overprotective papa bear instincts tend to kick in when it comes to jade. “i just happened to be in the vicinity,” eli lies, dropping his half-finished cigarette on the ground and extinguishing it with his foot before trailing behind jade. a comfortable silence passes for a few seconds before jade spoke up; usually, it was jade who initiated conversations, not eli. which was surprising, considering their personalities. “yeah, i am,” he answers, “why? d’ya wanna switch seats?”

            ₊ ˟      there’s not that much longer until the trip but it’s almost little wonder that eli hasn’t packed yet.    ‘    were you just waiting for me to help you?    ’    jane sighs heavily and it’s with the comfort of someone who is all too accustomed to it that she opens his bedroom door and tosses herself onto his mattress.  after all, aside from her own room in her own house, it’s the one place she’s spent the most time in since they were kids.  she lifts her head from his pillow, staring at the suitcase that lays open and empty beside her with a small frown before sitting up and climbing into it    –    a morbid fascination with bodies found in suitcases, perhaps but she’s still very much alive.    ‘    there.  now you have all you need.    ’    she muses quietly, smiling up at him with a twinkle of mischief in her eye.

–––––  eli has gotten used to having jane by his side all the time—she was more of a distracting menace most days, but he appreciated the presence, he really did. eli can also safely say that he spends most of his afternoons with jane, even though he constantly jokes about getting tired of her. “i don’t know what to pack,” eli responds once jane waltzes nonchalantly inside his room, “like, i’ve got a shit ton of clothes i wanna bring but i can’t take all of them with me.” he shuffles through his cabinet, murmuring something about his favorite band shirt that has mysteriously disappeared. giving up, eli turns to look at jane, who was comfortably perched on his suitcase. he returns her smile with an equally cheeky one. “maybe i do,” he says. “i don’t need anything else.”
