A while ago I had the idea to write descriptions of Holmeses (detectives) and Watsons (biographers) from across various adaptations, as though you're adopting them from an animal shelter.
Individual descriptions under the cut. Enjoy!
Holmeses:
Mr Brett
Mr Brett is very close to Canon and might throw some things around after being separated. With the right companion, though, he’ll thrive! Would prefer a single occupant home with lots of climbing space.
---
Rathbone
An elegant detective, Rathbone does have a silly side! He loves to play tricks and mess around with rope toys. You will have to watch him while he plays because he will tie himself up more often than not.
---
Howard
A fun-loving, giggly detective, Howard is a softy and very tactile. You will need at least two capes and deerstalkers available to allow for washing time, as he will insist on wearing one wherever he goes.
---
RDJ
RDJ is a very messy detective and goes through terrible moods when he’s on his own. He’s a sweetheart and very heroic, but he will probably follow you into places you don’t want him to be! Buy some locks.
---
Benedict
Benedict is a solitary creature, and has trouble making friends. He can be rude and off-putting but he is fiercely protective of the few people he likes. Might be willing to kill for you - try not to let him.
---
Herlock Sholmes
Herlock Sholmes is very outgoing and enthusiastic! He is constantly seeking companionship and may end up adopting you instead. Will need lots of space for flailing and dancing.
---
Merrison
A very talkative detective, Merrison can appear petulant at times - and he is! Once he knows you well enough he’ll become extremely devoted to you, even if he doesn’t show it very often.
---
Canon
Canon is our most senior detective! He’s been adopted many times but unfortunately keeps returning to us. He may seem cold and aloof, but he's really very friendly and loves to curl up in a comfy chair!
---
22nd Century (22C)
Something of a fish out of water, 22C will appreciate a home with lots of familiar elements he can use to ground himself. Suitable for someone with a regular routine and a space that he can claim as a retreat when he feels lost.
---
Jonny Lee
Jonny Lee is a lap detective, but only once he is comfortable. You will need to let him come to you for affection, as he won’t accept it when offered. Get used to him bringing you “gifts”, even unpleasant ones; it means he likes you!
---
Basil
Our smallest detective is nevertheless a big character! Animated and very quick, Basil would suit a small home as he doesn’t need a lot of space. Give him a few cheese crumpets and he’ll become your best friend.
---
господин Livanov
господин Livanov will come and go as he pleases, but likes to be warm and cosy when he’s at home. He also loves to tease, and enjoys the occasional round of boxing! He would prefer a companion who can speak Russian.
Watsons
Burke & Hardwicke
Our bonded pair of biographers, Burke and Hardwicke are both sweethearts. You’ll rarely find one without the other. Both are very loyal and have a mischievous side. Don’t wake them up too early!
---
Bruce
Bruce is perhaps not our smartest biographer, but he has a wicked sense of humour and is a friend to all. While occasionally clumsy and gruff, he will charge into danger to save you without a second thought.
---
Crawford
Crawford rather enjoys getting into scrapes - though he’d never admit it! He tries to be the responsible one but never really puts his foot down. Make sure to have plenty of arnica on hand for his next black eye.
---
Jude
One of our most independent biographers, Jude is still very loyal and willing to take up arms when asked, even if he seems a bit reluctant. Has a powerful side-eye and a bit of a gambling streak.
---
Martin
Martin has a temper, especially when patronised or underestimated. Needs an experienced companion who can keep him occupied and challenge him. Make sure he feels appreciated or he may wander off.
---
Iris Wilson
Iris is our youngest biographer and extremely intelligent for her age. She is still a child though, and can be a bit selfish and emotional. You will need to be encouraging and help her learn from her mistakes.
---
Williams
Williams is a biographer seeking balance in his life. He is loving and fiercely loyal to Merrison, but he also has a strong independent streak. Usually a very affable character, but if he gets angry, you will know about it!
---
Old Unreliable
Another of our seniors, this biographer can sometimes get confused about dates and the order of events. Just be patient with him and let him write in his own way. You’ll see how much of a conductor of light he can be!
---
Robotson
Robotson didn’t have the best start in life - his previous owners didn’t realise he was a biographer! Thankfully he’s recovered and is now ready to make a home with a new companion. Will need someone dedicated to his routine maintenance.
---
Lucy
Our only other female biographer, Lucy is very intelligent and has a wide range of skills, including hand to hand combat. She is also bilingual! She makes an ideal companion, but watch out for signs of distress e.g. dyeing her hair blonde.
---
David Q. Dawson
This decorated and distinguished pocket-sized biographer would be perfect for a smaller home. David is very polite and will do whatever you ask of him, but he doesn’t respond well to being shouted at. Cat-free household preferred.
---
господин Solomin
Though quite taciturn, господин Solomin is a sweetheart and quick to forgive. He’s very curious - try dropping hints about what you do for a living, and see if he guesses correctly! Provide lots of paper for his notes and doodles.

Chapter 1 of Drift United is go.
And there's also a new episode of me and @elldotsee's Ranger Ham Radio podcast out! Episode 0: The Prequeling (in case you missed this one in February) Episode 1 (out today): Reunion with the Rangers (You might want to read the chapter before listening though — definite spoiler alert!)

Quite literally how I convinced JBailler to be besties with me
One of the coolest parts about being a fan of fanfic is you can actually contact the author. And they will respond. And then you can message them nonstop until they allow you into their lives and then you’re becoming their beta reader and suddenly you know multiple authors of all types of fiction books and fanfic authors who will drag out their deleted fics for you to read at a moments notice.
Anyway. Comment on fics and message authors. It’s absolutely worth it.

Our first episode is now properly on Soundcloud (a more logical place than Youtube):
Link to Episode 1 of Ranger Ham Radio with J. Baillier & @elldotsee
The term ranger is a reference to Drift Compatible, a Sherlock fic I wrote eight years ago. It's been awaiting a sequel ever since, and now that sequel is becoming reality! In episode one of a wee lil' podcast we'll be doing to celebrate the return of Rangers Holmes and Watson, Elsie and I discuss the original story, its reception in the fandom and share some juicy reveals about the sequel.
Shorter, properly chapter-connected episodes will appear alongside Drift United once I start posting it. I've got about 80 % drafted so you will get it this spring.

It’s finished! She’s so back! Go read it all this *instant*. Shooo.
"A Thrill Failed To Deliver" is complete: chapter 32/32 has been posted to AO3.
Link to the final chapter
Link to the entire story

Consulting Detective Sherlock Holmes is back in business. No, it wasn’t a wig before and no, he’s most decidedly not single.

The 32nd and final chapter tracks time from January to September — from the end of treatment to when a little over a year has passed from diagnosis.
This 24-page conclusion to the story took a week to finish, including eight hours for a final edit (and a bit of help and arse-kicking from @elldotsee). Just like the entire story, it was a harrowing, beautiful and monstrous process where I felt I had to put to task all the experience and skills I've gained writing my previous medical h&c fics. In a way, though I have loved constructing it, I am as happy as Sherlock and John to see this journey coming to an end — to be able to give them the happy end they deserve.
Thank you all who have taken part in this journey. Would love to hear your thoughts especially now that it's concluded.

Gosh this boosted my ego today 🥰 best thing I have ever done (writing this, but specifically asking J to write it WITH ME)
Some (questionable and otherwise) gems from AO3 bookmarks: Proving A Point
This is the second part of a series of posts both highlighting the issue that many readers don't know that authors can see non-private bookmarks (and cannot remove them or comment on them) and to share some funny, poetic and downright wonky fave bits of mine from my fics' bookmark sections. My intention is not to shame or ridicule anyone — keep in mind that these bookmarks are visible to anyone and everyone visiting that story. If you put weird shit on my fic, own it LOL
Proving a Point, for which I was @elldotsee's wingwoman, is a novel-length retelling of the controversial novel Me Before You. John, fresh out of Afghanistan and in a bad way, gets hired as a personal carer and assistant by Mycroft Holmes to his younger brother who's been rendered a quadriplegic by a traffic accident. Sherlock turns out to be very different than what John had expected and when he realises how profoundly his new friend has lost the will to live, John decides to prove to Sherlock that he could still get his old life back even if it was going to be different in many ways. That journey then turns out to change not just Sherlock's but John's life and sense of self as well. Point is my all-time second most popular story.

That one comment by spenglernot that's practically a mini-essay made my day. No, it made my week.
There was one more strange bookmark — one so peculiar, in fact, that I've dedicated a separate post to it.

She’s baaaaaaaaaack! And ohmygodsabove she has been cooking over these last two years and it’s allllll coming out in the most delicious, delightful smorgasbord of medically realistic fic yumminess you have ever dug a spoon into.
PREPARE YOURSELVES. BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES. GET YE SMELLING SALTS. THE J BALL IS BACK IN THE GAME!!

When The Work is replaced with chemotherapy and restaurant dinners with radiation treatment, will a new, devastating normal bring John and Sherlock closer, or drive them apart — as Sherlock seems convinced it will?
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
This is a story told in John's POV on a topic that has been dealt with in several stories in this fandom — but not by me. Many of those old stories have focused on death and/or utilised much better-known types of brain malignancies. Not all brain cancers are created equal when it comes to treatment and impact on the patient's and their loved ones' lives, and prognosis does not always correlate with the intensity of what needs to be done to combat the disease. Here's my take on how John and Sherlock — and their friends and family — might handle such a crisis.
Twenty-five chapters of high level medical realism. Welcome aboard.

Not only is there another chapter, but the story is actually finished, now, putting a lid finally on at least half of my embarrassment over the muse abandoning me in the middle of fulfilling a Fandom Trumps Hate prompt two years ago.
Time for some more long-overdue post-S4 responsible adult talk. The kind they should've had if Mofftiss actually cared about emotional closure for anything ever. (Not that I'm bitter or anything; after all, one purpose of fic has always been fixing showrunners' failures).

The LGBTQ community has seen controversy regarding acceptance of different groups (bisexual and transgender individuals have sometimes been marginalized by the larger community), but the term LGBT has been a positive symbol of inclusion and reflects the embrace of different identities and that we’re stronger together and need each other. While there are differences, we all face many of the same challenges from broader society.
In the 1960′s, in wider society the meaning of the word gay transitioned from ‘happy’ or ‘carefree’ to predominantly mean ‘homosexual’ and was an umbrella term that meant anyone who wasn’t cisgender or heterosexual. The community embraced the word ‘gay’ as a mark of pride.
The modern fight for queer rights is considered to have begun with The Stonewall Riots in 1969 and was called the Gay Liberation Movement and the Gay Rights Movement.
The acronym GLB surfaced around this time to also include Lesbian and Bisexual people who felt “gay” wasn’t inclusive of their identities.
Early in the gay rights movement, gay men were largely the ones running the show and there was a focus on men’s issues. Lesbians were unhappy that gay men dominated the leadership and ignored their needs and the feminist fight. As a result, lesbians tended to focus their attention on the Women’s Rights Movement which was happening at the same time. This dominance by gay men was seen as yet one more example of patriarchy and sexism.
In the 1970′s, sexism and homophobia existed in more virulent forms and those biases against lesbians also made it hard for them to find their voices within women’s liberation movements. Betty Friedman, the founder of the National Organization for Women (NOW), commented that lesbians were a “lavender menace” that threatened the political efficacy of the organization and of feminism and many women felt including lesbians was a detriment.
In the 80s and 90s, a huge portion of gay men were suffering from AIDS while the lesbian community was largely unaffected. Lesbians helped gay men with medical care and were a massive part of the activism surrounding the gay community and AIDS. This willingness to support gay men in their time of need sparked a closer, more supportive relationship between both groups, and the gay community became more receptive to feminist ideals and goals.
Approaching the 1990′s it was clear that GLB referred to sexual identity and wasn’t inclusive of gender identity and T should be added, especially since trans activist have long been at the forefront of the community’s fight for rights and acceptance, from Stonewall onward. Some argued that T should not be added, but many gay, lesbian and bisexual people pointed out that they also transgress established gender norms and therefore the GLB acronym should include gender identities and they pushed to include T in the acronym.
GLBT became LGBT as a way to honor the tremendous work the lesbian community did during the AIDS crisis.
Towards the end of the 1990s and into the 2000s, movements took place to add additional letters to the acronym to recognize Intersex, Asexual, Aromantic, Agender, and others. As the acronym grew to LGBTIQ, LGBTQIA, LGBTQIAA, many complained this was becoming unwieldy and started using a ‘+’ to show LGBT aren’t the only identities in the community and this became more common, whether as LGBT+ or LGBTQ+.
In the 2010′s, the process of reclaiming the word “queer” that began in the 1980′s was largely accomplished. In the 2020′s the LGBTQ+ acronym is used less often as Queer is becoming the more common term to represent the community.
