unit 3 piece development
this shows the stages of creating my first outcome for this unit
this is developed from the smaller paintings and sketches and has now been transferred and scaled up onto this canvas measuring 1m x 1.8m which i think has worked really well for this piece

unit 2 final outcome
this piece is a full scale fireplace based off of the small sketches and paintings I have created throughout this unit
this was my first time using canvas to paint on and i found that it worked well when creating the depth in this piece
i’m pleased with the outcome of this work, I feel like there is a strong narrative behind it and the more you look at the work the more this narrative becomes clear
the scale of this work was also something new for me, as these units develop and go on i’m becoming more brave and open to new materials and processes

unit 2 context
for this unit I was looking into the role of women in the victorian era, it was inspired by this article discussing how victorian women where painted inside ornate rooms and beautiful homes but they’re trapped in these homes due to there role in society at the time
Tumblr media
my idea was to represent this idea in a different way and by using the victorian architecture to encase and entrap these figures it is suggestive of this

unit 3 initial outcomes
these paintings are the result of combining the two subjects
i’m pleased with the outcome and I think the colours work well to conceal the figures and blend them together with the shapes in the mouldings

unit 2 continuation
linking the architectural work to an ongoing theme that runs through my work, female nudes
these are some initial sketches and paintings from looking at positions that might work with the mouldings
using tracing paper I have created plans for some paintings that combine the two images together

unit one of fine art painting.
paintings inspired by Da Vinci anatomical foetus sketches, felt quite unsure and uninspired during this unit. For me it was more about getting back into painting and the academic atmosphere.

Final outcomes:
For my final outcome I have chosen to use this installation, out of the environments I created I think it is the most successful in portraying the concept of physical feelings of fear. The motif of the dots has been the underlying theme running through my project, it began with mark making and represents the physical feelings of fear such as increased heart rate, fast pulse and goosebumps. After experimenting with bubble wrap initially during the mark marking, I have developed this into a large scale projection. I wanted to use something quite ambiguous that would incite a different reaction from the individual viewers as fear is perceived differently by everyone and this is something I wanted to reflect in my outcome. I think the regularity and reparative nature of the projection makes it quite overwhelming for the viewer and feels almost clinical.

To demonstrate how this piece would be set up in a gallery I created a small mock exhibition, this allowed me to play around with the scale of the projection and positioning of it. I think using the corner of the space for the projection allows for the most immersion due to the two walls surrounding the viewer, the shadows created by the viewer being this position also add to the feeling of being immersed and surrounded by the piece.
I have also edited the patter into a gallery space. This allowed me to play around with the scale of the dots and the effect this would have on the audience. The use of the two corners allows

Sketchbook page documentation:
Pages of samples from the sheets I created to be used in a proposed instillation. These samples show a variety of circular patterns that differ in shape and size, some larger and more overwhelming and some smaller and more regular.

Planning and presenting final outcomes:
1. Clear photos/videos of final outcomes in detail.
2. Visualisation/photos of outcomes in situ (in relation to your brief/audience).
3. Visualisation of outcomes in a gallery setting.
1. I am working with the most successful outcome from my experimentation with creating immersive environments. I’m working with the projected dots and focusing on the scale and immersion that this pattern creates. I have got a variety of images from the environment I created the pattern in but I also have sections of the pattern and videos to give a clearer idea digitally.
2. I have created a smaller mock up version of the instillation I would create. To show the scale and audience I have included small figures to represent the point that the audience would view it from, and also the sense of immersion is demonstrated well through the use of these figures due to the size of the space they are in. So to demonstrate this is will use images from inside this environment to represent
3. Two and three go hand in hand for me, but I will be superimposing the dot pattern from the original room I projected it in, into a empty gallery space. This way I am able to experiment with the scale of the dots and what impact the different scales has on the audience.

Fascination with fear: research continued
I have annotated this article that I found that outlines the ideas of fear and definitions in both scientific and psychological terms. It also outlines how even though “fear is a universal human emotion, its reception varies greatly between individuals” and I found it related well to my project due to my heavy focus on audience interpretation and how this is varied, and the viewers individual reactions to the work. This idea of fear being different for everyone is fascinating and something I have been exploring in my work. The article also discusses reasons for feeling fear and discusses things like flight or fight mode and chemical releases in the brain that cause people to experience feelings of fear. Understanding this concept and how fear can be defined is important for me to look into as it underlines the basis of my project theme.

Fascination with fear:
I think humans, to some extent have a sort of fascination with fear. The popularity of novels and documentaries involving true crime, or books about the lives of serial killers really shows there is desire to learn about these people and there crimes, which in theory shouldn’t be the case. The whole genre of horror and thriller movies is another demonstration of this desire to experience fear and subject yourself too it. I have read and watched numerous true crime stories and regularly watch youtube true crime videos and have developed quite an interest in true crime. I think with the focus of audience interpretation that i’ve held throughout my project, and the aim to create a immersive space that represents fear, links to the idea of humans wanting to be around fear or having and interest for it. The environment I aim to create, I want to be both unsettling and immersive but intriguing for the audience/viewer.

The case of Denis Nilsen is one that i’ve researched a lot and could also be used to look at fear in another way, Nilsen killed to avoid being alone. This unusual element of the case is what makes it so fascinating and after reading the book and watching the BBC series ‘Des’ the strange nature of Nealson himself and his own experiences with death and his own fascination with it, is what in some ways, lead to the crimes he committed in later life.

Exploring literary theories:
Literature is often used to express the writers own ideas that may not be accepted, so they use characters to express these and separate it from themselves. Both Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ and Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘Strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ include themes of monstrous creation but links to human nature are present in both.
Jekyll and Hyde includes themes of duality in human nature and that this evil, that is personified by the fearful character of Mr Hyde, is present in everyone. These ideas of everyone having this side to them was shocking at the time of Stevenson’s writing, but I find it interesting, the idea of writers using there work to demonstrate ideas that maybe weren’t socially acceptable but clearly relevant relates to my motivation behind this project, I want to demonstrate and encapsulate the ideas of fear and feelings related to it and immerse the viewers in feelings they might not usually engage with or explore.

Instillation development and experimentation: part 2
Another avenue we explored was using ink to create these live shadows in the projection. By dropping the dark ink it created these shadows that grow and change as they enter the water, it gives the impression of the water being almost poisoned or contaminated by this darkness, I think like links to my project well and due to the scale becomes quite imposing on the viewer watching.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A by-product of this was the patterns created in the trays of water by the ink. These patterns, although small, look really large in the photographs and almost like your being dragged into the water which is really interesting to me.
