“Oh, but Ace Combat MUST be a direct, americanistic political analogy, all the Bad Guys fly Flankers! Isn’t it saying the guys who fly Russian jets are evil??”
Tumblr media
The first game to prominently feature a Flanker-flying antagonist spent literally its entire story mode exploring how he was, despite being on the wrong side, a deeply caring and kindhearted man who found mutual humanity with the narrator, a young kid whose parents it’s heavily implied he accidentally killed. The entire game builds up how despite the greater conflict going on around them, people share a mutual humanity and that war is a deeply unnatural thing that puts barriers between folks who otherwise would have been wonderful for one another- you kill the love of his life, leave his nation in ruins, and when you finally kill him, you leave the narrator devastated, the whole vehicle of the story being in the form of a letter he’s writing you in the hopes that you’ll understand a man that was, to you, a faceless mook, and that he believes Yellow 13, despite it all, would have forgiven you.
He’s the Char Aznable of the whole goddamned series, and antagonists flying his aircraft- up to including the “antagonist” of 7 (a grandpa and former prince who lost everything but his family and his urge to fly, things he clings to even as his body fails him and the world leaves his generation behind,) has always been a callback to him.
Plus Flankers are fucking cool and are treated as one of the best aircraft in every game, and the “bad guys” fly every other kind of American, European, and Japanese aircraft too.
Because it’s not a simulator of reality. It’s mecha anime, exploring concepts in a setting that is wholly fantastical, yet points to parallels in our own world and goes “makes you think, huh?”
Reducing it to a direct parallel to our own reality minimizes a series that has always has more to say than your empty-headed Call of Duties or your Medal of Honors of the world.

Happy 25th anniversary to my favorite racing game of all time!
youtube
Im writing this very very very early in the morning so expect some poor writing.
Today (12/03/2023) marks the 25th anniversary for the ps1 racing title "Ridge Racer Type 4". Ridge Racer Type 4, also know as R4, is my personal favorite racing game. While it is fair to claim that it is not the greatest racing game, as it dosnt have much content due to its platform, R4 will always be my favorite. I can confidently say that the thing that made me fall in love with R4 is its aesthetic, its UI style, soundtrack, and overall art style give R4 a very unique feel that remains unmacthed.
Due yourself a favor and find a way to play this game. When you do, make sure to play one of the grand prix campaigns (my personal favorite part of the game). On a side note, if there are any games that have a similar style to R4, please share! I woud love to see more of such a unique artstyle!

Air Combat (Ace Combat 1) review
I recently ordered a copy of Ace Combat 2, so in preparation for that game I played through its predecessor Air Combat. (I played this on original hardware and did not think to take pictures so there will be no screenshots, sorry)
(Also very sorry about any grammatical errors ahead I am writing this right after beating the game and I am rather tired)
Tumblr media
Air Combat is experimental. The whole game kinda feels like it's testing to see what features do and don't work. This leaves the overall gameplay, while still mostly recognizable to future games in the series, very simple.
The game does have some features not seen in future installments these include but are not limited to: branching missions( the game is not as linear and there are quite a few optional levels), wingman costing extra credits to fly with, and the most frustrating, losing planes when you fail a mission (for example, if you were to crash your f-22, it's gone and you cannot get it back.)
The game has an overall simple story "Terrorists took over some islands, go kill them and stop the coup." it's told to you in the opening text crawl and resolved in the ending text crawl.
For a series known for its music, it feels weird to say that Air Combat doesn't have that many memorable tracks. Not to say that there aren't any, last resort, Night and Day, and head first are good, but it never really hits the highs that future tracks do.
Its weakest point is the graphics, more specifically the terrain. While it is a PS1 game so poorly aged graphics are excusable, it undoubtedly looks worse than other games on the system, including ace combat 2 and 3. The ground below always looks very bland.
Air combat is also VERY short, it took me a little over 1 hour to beat (granted I didn't complete every level.)
Overall, while I enjoyed Air Combat, I couldn't really recommend it to somebody as the first Ace Combat game they should Play, Instead, I recommend it to fans who are pretty familiar with the series and want to see where it all began.

Played, bought, and beat Hylics
Normally I don't really like most RPGs, yet Hylics was able to draw me in with its art style alone
Tumblr media
The graphics are entirely made out of real clay models.
A lot of the dialog is gibberish that isn't important to the overall story (not to say that it's bad). however, the main story is simple. you play as a crescent moon-headed man named Wayne on his quest to overthrow the tyrant Gibby.
The music and sound effects are as unique as the game's art and really help cement the overall tone.
The next paragraph contains minor spoilers for a gameplay mechanic, skip over it if you want to go in completely blind.
Most of the gameplay is what you would expect from a turn-based RPG, but it has a bunch of unique features in it as well. For example, the game lacks an XP system, so if you want to grow your max HP (called flesh) you have to grind meat that your enemies drop.
Hylics is a very unique game and I highly recommend picking it up if you are looking for a short, unique RPG

Ace combat and allegories
The Ace Combat franchise uses allegories in its stories a lot (Ace Combat 04 - The biblical story of Jesus, Ace Combat 0 - Arthurian Legend). So I find it really brave that Ace Combat 5 just created the allegory it wanted to use for the game (the story of Razgriz). I genuinely can not think of many other pieces of media that create a story for the sole purpose of creating an allegory to it.

6/30/23 is the 28th anniversary of the ace combat series and to celebrate I want to post a snippet from the solo wing pixy page on the villain's wiki because I think its really funny
Tumblr media
I love the idea of putting core character traits under the hobby section, I also love that it is his goal now to atone for his sins.

the Sims 2 and obscure software
I was reinstalling the Sims 2 and all the DLC I owned for it when I was met with an interesting screen. Obviously, I know that the Sims 2 and its DLC are not obscure games, there are some parts to the 2004 life simulation game that fly under the radar. when installing the University Life and Seasons DLC, a unique screen popped up asking me to register my game online (the website is dead now). The screen was different from the rest (from what I found online it was a standard for all EA-developed and published titles at the time). However, the window came with one of the weirdest songs I have ever heard, take a listen. (using a clip I found online because the one I recorded had some issues)
youtube
When it comes to stuff like this, I always wonder who are the people who made it, and in this case, the person who made the background music. I couldn't find anything about it online (though my search was brief). I also wonder what they are doing today, do they still make music? Do they still work at EA? guess we will never know.

The more I look into this mod the more apparent it becomes that it is very overpowered
you get medieval-era units all the way back in the ancient era. mind you these units have high movement range, no terrain penalty, and can do absurd damage.
you can also earn great people 40% faster per city very early in the game.
Tumblr media
The funniest concept for a mod I have ever seen is the Civ V kingdom hearts civ mod.
No, I have never played a kingdom hearts game.
