RE: this post I made a few weeks ago about the U.S. Geological Survey’s 2018 budget justification, which calls for the elimination of 11 full time employees in the Smithsonian’s bird and mammal division. This is a great article about some of the work they do. 

“[USGS scientists] have been a part of the U.S. government’s taxonomic research program since the late 1800s when they started the bird and mammal collections at the national museum.”  … “The USGS Biological Survey Unit has been acquiring specimens and their associated data, as well as conducting research on the collections since 1889 when an agreement was reached for the deposition within the Smithsonian Institution of specimens acquired in the course of Biological Survey activities.“ … “Suzy Peurach … concedes that it is nice to see one’s work pay off in the here and now. “Once I was documenting and collecting mice from the southwestern U.S. It seemed almost pointless to collect all of those specimens at the time, but when the serious hantavirus broke out scientists were able to look at the specimens we’d collected and track the spread of the virus through the mice.”

Orang yang hidupnya ingin berubah baik, pasti akan diuji Allah, begitupun yang ingin mencoba keburukan, pasti juga akan Allah uji, tak ada manusia yang lepas dari ujian

Hanya saja, bagi mereka yang taat, Allah sertakan bahagia, nikmat, kebaikan di dalam tiap ujian itu, walau dia juga pasti juga masih rasakan sedih dan derita ujian itu

Tapi bagi yang bermaksiat pada Allah, dibalik kenikmatan yang sementara, kesenangan semu, ada ganjalan yang Allah beri dalam hatinya, ketidaktenangan, kegalauan

Bukankah kita tahu bahwa ketenangan itu hanya datang dari Allah? Bukankah itu yang kita minta dari Allah dalam kehidupan kita? Dalam keluarga kita? Sakinah dari Allah?

Tapi sayangnya kita mencari ketenangan itu dari dunia, sesuatu yang sudah pernah dilakukan orang-orang sebelum kita, dan mereka semua gagal mendapatkannya

Firaun, Qarun, Namrud, memiliki semuanya, dunia dan apapun yang mereka inginkan, tapi mereka tak menemukan bahagia. Bahkan yang mereka temukan justru kekufuran

Akhi, bila antum ingin berlomba dalam hal dunia, orang-orang masa lalu pernah melakukannya lebih baik, tapi kesudahan mereka justru jauh dari harapan mereka

Akhi, bukankah yang Allah berikan saat berhijrah sudah jauh lebih baik? Kenikmatan ditengah khalwat berdua dengan Allah? Ketenangan dan kawan-kawan yang baik?

Akhi, kesulitan di dunia itu ada batasnya, begitupun juga dengan kenikmatan di dunia. Mati adalah batasnya. Tapi setelah mati itu ada keabadian, itu yang kita pertimbangkan

Akhi, untuk apa dunia antum dapatkan, tapi antum kehilangan kenikmatan ibadah, ketenangan hidup, dan sahabat-sahabat yang ikhlas membersamai dalam ketaatan?

Akhi, kuatlah di jalan hijrah, tak ada yang berkata ini mudah, tapi di jalan hijrah kita selalu dibersamai Allah, walau kita mungkin lelah, tapi semua kita lakukan karena Allah

Discovery of Bowhead whale genes offer hope of extending human life

Genome for the world’s longest-living mammal may hold key to 200-year lifespans

Scientists mapping the genome for the world’s longest-living mammal, the bowhead whale say it could be used to prolong the life of human beings.

Bowhead whales have a lifespan of up to 200 years and scientists have studied why this mammal rarely develops conditions such as cancer and heart disease.

This species outlives other whale species by far and studies in the UK and America have charted out the whales’ genetic patterns. Scientists have identified a number of unique genes links to cancer resistance, DNA damage repair and increased longevity, according to a Sunday Times report.

Joao Pedro de Magalhaes, lead researcher of the UK-based study says this discovery could lead to the whale genes being utilised in assisting people live for longer.

“My ideal next experiment is to take a gene from the bowhead whale and put it in a mouse and see if that mouse will live longer and be protected against cancer,” he said.

“If they do what I expect them to do, then we could try to think of ways to employ the knowledge for [human] therapeutic purposes.”

The study, conducted at the Liverpool Centre for Genomics Research, found that the bowhead had unique mutations in two genes linked to lifespan in animals. These are the ERCC1 gene, which is believed to repair DNA, increase cancer resistance and show ageing.

The PCNA gene is also linked to DNA repair.

Bowheads were once believed to live to around 70 years, similar to other whales. However, discoveries of 19th century ivory, slate, and jade spear points in freshly killed whales in 1993, 1995, 1999, and 2007 suggest that some of the animals reached 150-200 years old.

In May 2007, a 15m (49ft) specimen caught off the Alaskan coast was discovered with the head of an explosive harpoon embedded deep under its neck blubber. The 3.5-inch (89 mm) arrow-shaped projectile was manufactured in New Bedford, Massachusetts, a major whaling centre, around 1890, suggesting the animal may have survived a hunt more than 100 years before.

What do you hope people will take away from this movie?

We want people to rediscover the fascination for science and discovery that we felt as kids, growing up and watching the show. Bill’s fans are adults now and they’re able to put the knowledge gleaned from the show to practical use. We face HUGE challenges on our pale blue dot (global warming, stressed ecosystems, treatable diseases, etc.) and science and technology can help us better understand the problems (and even solve them!). Also, we want this film to be fun and funny, just like the show. Bill’s life is inspirational and we want viewers to hang out with a funny, smart and charming guy for 90-100 minutes of fun.

Nice feed Investing in kids = saving future lives 💞

Bill, I've been watching old episodes of your show on netflix and I must say, you had some pretty great cameos in the first season. I was wondering, how big was the budget on this new show? How did you get such talent as Sinbad to commit? Would love to hear the back story to the planning of the first season and how it all came to be! Thanks!

The key was that, in general, those celebs already had agreements with Disney and Buena Vista Television. Also, celebrities are often willing to do work for kids shows, as many of them have kids. It was a great partnership.
