What is a God?

I asked War this question during our annual chess game.

He stopped complaining about nuclear weapons and frowned. A thousand hands, bloody and clean, played with a necklace made of a million dog tags as he thought in silence.

“A God,” He said eventually, “Is Conquest. Violence made form to define the world they desire.”

I told him I disagreed. Surely a God did not have to be so violent?

Next I asked Technology.

It was showing off a new prototype rail-gun it hoped would make War forgive it. I could see it thinking when I asked my question, equations and schematics whirling around in a great arc.

“A God,” It said eventually, “Is Progress. The indomitable march forwards.”

I told it I disagreed. Surely a God was not so constrained?

Finally I asked Life/Death.

They/They were watching the mortals, as they/they always did, recording their lives and deaths in their/their endless circling. They/They spun as always, life into death into life and back again.

“A God/A God,” They/They said, “Is a Cycle/Is a Cycle. A part of the world/A part of the world.”

I told Them/Them I disagreed. Surely a God could choose?

After thinking on it, I have come to my own conclusion.

A God, I have decided, is selfishness. They are and do whatever they choose.

“I disagree,” Said War. “Surely a God cannot be peaceful?”

“I disagree,” Said Technology. “Surely a God must have a purpose?”

“I disagree/I disagree,” said Life/Death. “Surely a God must be natural?/Surely a God must be natural?”

And yet I think they are all wrong. I decide who I am and what I do.
