I think a big factor in my love for Ellis’ writing -apart from it being… compulsively readable- is the sheer shallowness that pervades the world he describes.

It’s amazing, because some pages read like endless list of actions done by the protagonists or other characters and maybe at first you won’t notice it but there are almost no feelings involved: people move like machines, there aren’t emotional moments that make you attached to them, there aren’t backstories that explain their personalities, sometimes you question whether they have a personality at all. And that’s precisely the point!

I don’t think the word ‘happy’ has been used even once in all Ellis’ books I’ve read, nor any other synonym that might convey a positive feeling of that sort: on the contrary, what you get is an undertone of despair -under the total lack of sensibility and morality-. So, you have these characters that you do not like, that you do not even know because they seem to have no internal life whatsoever and that at the same time seem always on the verge of drowning in the glitter and the money of the world they are in.

It’s something I find endlessly fascinating, the way Ellis manages to convey this sensation of utter desolation and hopelessness with a seemingly emotionless and list-like writing: surely nothing I could ever dream to achieve.

#this is on my mind. so. hmm. this is so right #yeah i think it's important to realize that these characters are actively choosing what to show you as narrators. that's why it's like that #i love the word 'seem' in 'because they seem to have no internal life whatsoever.' it's such a good summary of them #it's why everyone enjoys them at their breaking points and considers those the most 'human' moments .. but i think it's pretty human to #hide everything within yourself as well #fave
