The Locomotive by Julian Tuwin (translated by W. Wipple)
A big locomotive has pulled into town,
Heavy, humungus, with sweat rolling down,
A plump jumbo olive.
Huffing and puffing and panting and smelly,
Fire belches forth from her fat cast iron belly.
Poof, how she's burning,
Oof, how she's boiling,
Puff, how she's churning,
Huff, how she's toiling.
She's fully exhausted and all out of breath,
Yet the coalman continues to stoke her to death.
Numerous wagons she tugs down the track:
Iron and steel monsters hitched up to her back,
All filled with people and other things too:
The first carries cattle, then horses not few;
The third car with corpulent people is filled,
Eating fat frankfurters all freshly grilled.
The fourth car is packed to the hilt with bananas,
The fifth has a cargo of six grand pi-an-as.
The sixth wagon carries a cannon of steel,
With heavy iron girders beneath every wheel.
The seventh has tables, oak cupboards with plates,
While an elephant, bear, two giraffes fill the eighth.
The ninth contains nothing but well-fattened swine,
In the tenth: bags and boxes, now isn't that fine?
There must be at least forty cars in a row,
And what they all carry — I simply don't know:
But if one thousand athletes, with muscles of steel,
Each ate one thousand cutlets in one giant meal,
And each one exerted as much as he could,
They'd never quite manage to lift such a load.
First a toot!
Then a hoot!
Steam is churning,
Wheels are turning!
More slowly - than turtles - with freight - on their - backs,
The drowsy - steam engine - sets off - down the tracks.
She chugs and she tugs at her wagons with strain,
As wheel after wheel slowly turns on the train.
She doubles her effort and quickens her pace,
And rambles and scrambles to keep up the race.
Oh whither, oh whither? go forward at will,
And chug along over the bridge, up the hill,
Through mountains and tunnels and meadows and woods,
Now hurry, now hurry, deliver your goods.
Keep up your tempo, now push along, push along,
Chug along, tug along, tug along, chug along
Lightly and sprightly she carries her freight
Like a ping-pong ball bouncing without any weight,
Not heavy equipment exhausted to death,
But a little tin toy, just a light puff of breath.
Oh whither, oh whither, you'll tell me, I trust,
What is it, what is it that gives you your thrust?
What gives you momentum to roll down the track?
It's hot steam that gives me my clickety-clack.
Hot steam from the boiler through tubes to the pistons,
The pistons then push at the wheels from short distance,
They drive and they push, and the train starts a-swooshin'
'Cuz steam on the pistons keeps pushin' and pushin';
The wheels start a rattlin', clatterin', chatterin'
Chug along, tug along, chug along, tug along! . . . .

My pain is constant and sharp, and I do not hope for a better world for anyone.- ex-LB&SC 0-6-0T E2 NWR #1 "Thomas", from the story "Thomas And Gordon" from Thomas The Tank Engine, The Railway Series No. 2
the labor strike saga in thomas the tank engine is so strange to think about in any degree. like it's one of the few times in children's media where a labor strike is depicted and our dear smart incredibly economically informed (JOKE) friend the reverend wilbery awdry really was just out here saying "FUCK workers. FUCK THEM. i want my railway engines. I WANT MY RAILWAY ENGINES" and then he took a big fat shit on the floor while sweeping the economic disparity of the working class under the rug. "worker's rights????? FUCK THAT " - the reverend wilbert awdry
people say the missing coach is the worst railway series story but i will contend the labor strike saga is the worst because it's so misrepresentative of the issues at hand and so virulently anti worker's rights it's unfunny
A bit of a continuation of the crossover art I made a while back. But for the vibe I got inspired by Fromsoftware’s Elden Ring.
Henry became the vessel of of the Fierce Deity after he saw all the dragon tears. The mask suppresses his kind nature and bolsters his physical strength and instincts. He mercilessly strikes down Bokoblins, Moblins, Lizalfos, Lynels and the fearsome gloom hands.
Someone had bought the front of a GM EMD Diesel locomotive from Victorian Railways, put it in their front garden and arranged the roof to look like a train smash.
The Fat Controller decides in a seeming fit of whimsy to send the sole station pilot to a branchline of his own, leaving the job of shunting to: Gordon, an oversized, highly specialised passenger locomotive, who cannot be any less suited for shunting coaches; Henry, also oversized for the job of shunting in the yard, and faulty; and James, an only slightly less awkward modded ex-L&Y Class 28 Mogul.
Gordon may be being snobbish in how he expressed the demands of the striking locos, but he had a real point. In a real railyard, this would be a waste of resources and expertise and would be an absolute safety hazard.
He then makes Thomas, Percy and Edward into scabs and more or less encourages them to spit on the strikers.
The only it could make sense the way it does if you completely ignore the purpose for which shunters are built for the way they are in real world railyards, and don’t think any workers complaints are at all worth at all striking for.
Wilbert Awdry did volunteer for the Tallylyn yes, but a narrow gauge volunteer railway is a different beast all together from a big rail yard in the mid to late High Steam Age, which had been alive with strikes by railway workers (the 1950 Victorian Railways AFULE/ARU strike comes to mind) ; it would have given a very paternalistic color to his view of how he thought a railway should operate.
So yeah, I agree with you. The Strike Saga is probably the worst story in the RWS.

One of my favourite engines, Victorian Railways VR R-Class Hudson R761 celebrated their 72nd birthday, entering service on the 9th of April 1952; after being brought from North British Locomotive Works (Build no 27051), Glasgow to Australia on the Merchant Vessel Helenus, arriving on the 28th of Feb, 1952.
She was one of the fortunate seven Rs that made it to preservation and has not stopped running.
(She is also the IRL basis of my Victorian Railways AU OC, Andri, her character profile along with that of her twin brother, R707 "City Of Melbourne' aka Cerberus is here).
Her caretakers, SteamRail, celebrated the occasion by showing this beautifully eerie, Christine-vibed photo:
’Good evening, sir! You shouldn’t be walking around the sheds this time of the night…’ *soft wheesh*
She was repainted ahead of this year’s open day, where she strutted her stuff.
Here’s to you R761, a survivor who thrives in preservation long after the regime that tried to put you away has gone to dust!

Lots of Love for you and Rook my dear friend! Happy Birthday! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂
127 years young, baby!
So it’s my birthday again & somehow i am still here. Despite it all, despite what will undoubtably still come…good & bad…I’m here.
Over the previous year, I have spent most of my time among people who I love and cherish, because of the shit way I was treated by shit people, because of the terrible things that happened in my life, things I haven’t really talked about here. It’s the only way to survive and I hope all of you have good friends to do the same with <3
Though i am not what i would say is “OK”, i am trying my damnedest & i think, at least, that’s something to be proud of 💜🚂
Here’s to another year of ME BEING WEIRD, hope you’re all ready xD
