190716 NHK Interview
Leading Actor of <100 Days My Prince> Doh Kyungsoo (plays Lee Yool / Wondeuk)
Not just wildly popular in Korean, EXO has fans in Asia such as Japan and China. Active as main vocalist D.O. in the group, he debuted as an actor with his birth name Doh Kyungsoo. The first among members to embark on acting, Doh Kyungsoo has steadily shown improvement in his acting via both films and dramas, and challenged his first period drama <100 Days My Prince>.
Tumblr media
"I play both the cold and arrogant Crown Prince Lee Yool and clumsy and silly commoner Wondeuk. When I first read the scenario, I found the story interesting and really wanted to try playing Lee Yool and Wondeuk. (I decided on this project) Because I thought this was a good opportunity to showcase a different side of me to the audience. Although the parts where the Crown Prince was plotted against by the others in the palace were pretty dark, the way the story developed in Seongjoo Village was exceptionally interesting, so the more I thought, the more I wanted to participate in the project, I really wanted to visit this village! (laughs) I recall I was feeling excited as I was reading the script."
As there are many parts that are different from modern dramas, hence the filming process of period dramas are often labelled as "too challenging" by many actors. Despite being at the filming set of such a period drama, Doh Kyungsoo is serious and had put in a lot of thought into it, and took up the challenge with a positive attitude.
"I was very nervous as this is the first time I am participating in a period drama. With the unique manner of speech and delivery of lines as well as mannerisms in period dramas being exceptionally difficult, I had addressed these questions with the Director and Scriptwriter adequately, and so was able to overcome them one by one. As there were many scenes of swordplay and horse riding, I also had extensive discussions with the horse riding and stunt instructors before filming. As I did not have ample time to practise before filming, I spent all my free time between filming to practise as well as learn on set. Bearing in mind the need to learn swordplay and horse riding within a short period of time without getting injured, I also managed to resolve this issue after careful thought and consideration. Although there were many instances that things felt unfamiliar or areas that I were clumsy in, it's really interesting to film a period drama. After gaining a better understanding of how people used to live and the tools that they used, I really benefited and learnt a lot. I felt like this drama was spent discovering many new things and I was anticipating all through the filming process."
Tumblr media
All-rounded Wondeuk and clumsy Wondeuk. How did you differentiate the two characters in your acting?"Lee Yool and Wondeuk are ultimately the same person. Hence, when I was playing the characters, I did not intentionally try to play them too differently. Instead, I played them as one single character. As the drama was set in the palace as well as Seongjoo Village, I used these settings to present the drama and story, and the two characters were naturally presented because of that." We've heard that you're closer to Wondeuk in terms of character. "Besides being similar to Lee Yool's manly side, I don't think I come across as aloof. As for Wondeuk, Besides being silly (laughs), I think i'm quite similar to his personality.

Cine21, Jan ‘19 issue: Kyungsoo interview
[mild spoilers for swing kids]
Q. Let’s start from Swing Kids (2018), your latest. Ro Kisoo goes about ruffling feathers, and his flashiness stands out from the rest of your filmography.  I had a lot of discussions with the director on what was best for Kisoo. There was [a boy in] an old reference picture almost exactly like Kisoo’s character. He was in an old school uniform and wore his army cap tilted; even his pants were wide and baggy. He seemed trendy for the time and I drew a lot of direction from the picture.
Q. Ro Kisoo expresses himself through dance. What sort of experience was it for you, as his actor?  When I stand on stage as an EXO member, our choreography and formations are already determined. It was harder as Kisoo because there needed to be emotion in every one of his movements and expressions. I was especially worried about conveying the scene where he dances to David Bowie’s Modern Love in a way that the viewers would find refreshing and freeing. It reminded me of my first time trying to dance - frustration because my body wouldn’t listen to me, how good it felt to get each move down. Also, I could dance as I pleased because the director would capture the whole routine and the big emotions. Big movements for happiness, fast ones for frustration. To be honest, I was surprised by the final cut of that sequence. I didn’t realize how brightly I had been smiling. That dancing is something happy and to be enjoyed is what I’d felt as a musician too, but I had felt this so strongly that the smile came naturally.
Q. It wasn’t something you planned to act out, but constant dancing is of course tiring, and that starts to show on your face. I’ve seen other actors say that actors who also know how to dance are better at filming action scenes, so it seems that your music career helps your acting one. All that happens when you try to put emotion into motions you aren’t comfortable making is that you ruin the movements and expressions. So for scenes where they’re both important, like the Modern Love one, I made myself familiar. When my body can move without my input, it’s possible to be expressive. All I could do was practice. Action scenes and dancing do have a lot in common, so I did have a little know-how from applying what I had already learned.
Q. The first and second halves of Swing Kids have totally different tones. As its leading actor, you must have put a lot of thought into handling the clash well. There was a part that I worried over for a while, without straying too far from how Kisoo would feel. The film’s tone shifts after the arrival of a supposed friend, Kwang-guk, to the prison camp. Kisoo’s mood worsens, but a sour face would have thrown off the intended tone. Kisoo wasn’t supposed to get too caught up in the atmosphere of that scene, and I kept his expression flat.
Q. It also seems like acting dryly ties in with your own disposition.  I wonder all the time why, in acting, anger has to be obvious, why there needs to be yelling. Because I’ve never expressed my anger that way. I usually try not to let my emotions complicate issues. Of course, I have to adjust because characters have their own personalities, but I went with what felt natural to me for Kisoo.
Q. Swing Kids features both snappy cuts and long takes. Did you worry about how the editing room would preserve the rhythm of the scenes? I found it interesting rather than worrying. I liked the long takes because those let me get immersed in a location. I had so much fun with the scenes like the one where Kisoo keeps thinking about tap-dancing even in his sleep, and it would cut away each time with a tak-tak-tak! I really wondered how the end result would turn out. The Modern Love scene in particular, because (Park) Hyesoo and I had practiced and filmed for it separately. I was curious about what kind of picture that would make after editing, and I’m very happy with how it turned out. (laughs)

[190101] Leaving behind the idol image, Doh Kyungsoo's 2019
Tumblr media
He debuted as an idol group member. He's neither the (group's) centre nor leader. But after 6 years, situations seem to be have evolved. One who has grown, he's now able to dominate and lead big screens (i.e. movies) and TV dramas. One can't just confine him within his group, professional actor Doh Kyungsoo.
The editorial team within TV Report has selected the most anticipated idol of 2019. 12 journalists have participated and each offered their own opinions. The idol who has received the most votes is D.O. of EXO (Doh Kyungsoo).
The 4 journalists who had picked Doh Kyungsoo felt that Doh Kyungsoo has already surpassed his position in EXO and have gained control by leading movies and TV dramas. Doh Kyungsoo in 2018 was very active. Doh Kyungsoo, who has long since been acknowledged to having potential as an artiste has proven himself through his active and passionate activities (this year).
Doh Kyungsoo was the leading actor of TV drama <100 Days My Prince>. He was also scene stealer in movie series <Along with the Gods> and most recently the leading actor of movie <Swing Kids>. Considering all this, TV Report journalists felt that there's a lot more room to anticipate from Doh Kyungsoo in 2019.
Further, Astro member Cha Eunwoo received 2 votes. He had drew attention due to his good looks and talent, and he's one seemingly with growing charms. Not only was he able to digest variety, he was also able to do the same for acting. One is expecting to meet more of Cha Eunwoo in the coming year.
Other idols that each received 1 vote from the remaining 6 journalists were Rowoon (SF9), Lucas (NCT), Mina (Gugudan), Ong Seongwu (Wanna One), Jennie (BLACKPINK) and JooE (Momoland). As idol members that are starting to dazzle in 2018, I'm cheering them on to broaden their spectrum in 2019.

Pann is Full of Praises for Kyungsoo’s Singing
source :
[PANN] D.O.’s Part in This EXO’s Song, Please… For Real
Everyone should listen to this. I’m not an EXO’s fan, really.
I was listening to Universe, and just clicked on any side-tracks with a seemingly nice title, and so it was my first time listening to the song (Good Night). As soon as the song got to this part, I was f*cking surprised, thus I looked up the lyrics with each-member parts on Naver, then turned out it was D.O.’s.
It’s in EXO’s Universe album (the one with a cup of coffee as the jacket picture), the part in Good Night during the 52nd ~ 58th second was really super good.
“I just want the time to stop, as it is. I want to hold you in my arms again.”
This part is so percussively good. Go listen to it, D.O.’s voice is just freaking nice. I wanna continue replaying that part as I listen to the song~ And also, his distinctive pronunciation? I really love it.
“I want to hold you in my arms,” this part is just so heart fluttering ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

180916 ‘100 Days My Prince’ Doh Kyung Soo, Soaring as an actor, "erasing (actdol) prejudice through passion in projects"
Tumblr media
In the Monday and Tuesday tvN drama <100 Days My Prince> that started airing on the 10th of this month, Doh Kyungsoo plays two roles - Lee Yool, a good looking Crown Prince that posesses both martial and literary art skills who ends up as Wondeuk, a useless commoner in a village. Doh Kyungsoo has since receive viewers' good response for portraying the sharp yet prickly Crown Prince with his piercing stare and stable diction.
<100 Days My Prince> recorded 5% ratings for its first episode and after 2 episodes, observed an average 6.2% ratings and peaked at 8.1% across cable TV and subscribed networks. The beautiful sageuk background coupled with the good acting of the cast had raised viewers' level of immersion and consequently the raising the buzz among netizens.
Tumblr media
Although it's Doh Kyungsoo's first challenge in sageuk, and also his first lead role drama, he had met the expectations raised through his steady acting. Doh Kyungsoo had challenged acting for the first time through SBS drama <It's Okay That's Love> (2014) and subsequently appeared in many films like <Cart> (2014), <Unforgettable> (2016), <My Annoying Brother> (2016), <Room No.7> (2017), <Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds> (2017), steadily accumulating invaluable experiences through these film projects. Although they may be small roles, he left behind his glitzy image on stage, and showcased a reversal charm with his purity and steadiness. His chemistry with costars and realistic digestion of characters often result in him being scene stealers.
Despite being acknowledged for his potential, there still remains the stigma and misperception of actdols and actors that first debuted as idols. An industry insider shared, "unlike others that have challenged acting (projects that) mainly focused on visuals, he had concurrently fulfilled the roles of both idol and actor, idols like that shine brightly as they accumulate experience steadily," "as idols with many overseas schedules and tours, it's difficult to focus and shoot one project. (Doh Kyungsoo) focused on the projects with passion, and began with small roles, so instead of prejudice, there are more positive feedback."
Some netizen comments on this article
[+246, -1] There wasn't a use of exaggerated expressions or voice, and he could also immersed himself while acting...his natural baritone vocalisation seems to have played a big part and his eyes expressions were really good...although he's an idol, his classic visual/outlook is also one his of biggest asset as an actor.
[+175] One can see the continuous improvement of Doh Kyungsoo, it's great, especially as the main leading actor in <100 Days My Prince>, he managed to develop and move the plotline along, it's not an easy feat and I will continue to anticipate moving forward.
[+110] I acknowledge Doh Kyungsoo's acting in <100 Days My Prince>, he really did so well, I will support (him) in the future.
[+83] After waiting the Crown Prince, his performance was very good and the drama is also interesting, I will look forward.

[Naver] More Praises From Critics for Kyungsoo
source : naver
[T/N : I only translate Kyungsoo-related parts]
Naver : Idol, I Put An Idol In This Spot… ‘Acting-dols’ Who Permeate Dramas.
Tumblr media
Idol, I put an idol in this spot. But we’re not talking about an idol groups’ end of promotion or even the comeback with repeated music-broadcasting performance. We’re talking about ‘Acting-dols’ who are active in the drama landscape. Where the affirmation and denial towards ‘idol who takes acting’ themselves still co-exist.
September 10th will be the first broadcast of Monday-Tuesday drama ‘Hundred Days Husband’, following ‘Let’s Eat 3′ which finished early just awhile ago. Both dramas are in contrast a sageuk and a modern play, even so they’re equal in point of having an active idol-group member as the male lead.

[Naver] About The Gap Between EXO D.O. and Actor Doh Kyungsoo
Tumblr media
D.O.? Doh Kyungsoo? Doh D.O.?
He debuted as D.O., the vocal of boygroup EXO, but to general public who aren’t originally fans, he’s more familiar as actor Doh Kyungsoo, right. What’s amazing is, as a member of EXO he’s gushing with the ‘idol pose’, and as an actor the ‘natural-born actor’ side of him comes in sight. Seems that, these are the reasons why he enjoys both grand fandom and popularity with the public.
