He debuted as an idol group member. He's neither the (group's) centre nor leader. But after 6 years, situations seem to be have evolved. One who has grown, he's now able to dominate and lead big screens (i.e. movies) and TV dramas. One can't just confine him within his group, professional actor Doh Kyungsoo. 

The editorial team within TV Report has selected the most anticipated idol of 2019. 12 journalists have participated and each offered their own opinions. The idol who has received the most votes is D.O. of EXO (Doh Kyungsoo). 

The 4 journalists who had picked Doh Kyungsoo felt that Doh Kyungsoo has already surpassed his position in EXO and have gained control by leading movies and TV dramas. Doh Kyungsoo in 2018 was very active. Doh Kyungsoo, who has long since been acknowledged to having potential as an artiste has proven himself through his active and passionate activities (this year). 

Doh Kyungsoo was the leading actor of TV drama <100 Days My Prince>. He was also scene stealer in movie series <Along with the Gods> and most recently the leading actor of movie <Swing Kids>. Considering all this, TV Report journalists felt that there's a lot more room to anticipate from Doh Kyungsoo in 2019.  

Further, Astro member Cha Eunwoo received 2 votes. He had drew attention due to his good looks and talent, and he's one seemingly with growing charms. Not only was he able to digest variety, he was also able to do the same for acting. One is expecting to meet more of Cha Eunwoo in the coming year.

180916 ‘100 Days My Prince’ Doh Kyung Soo, Soaring as an actor, "erasing (actdol) prejudice through passion in projects"

In the Monday and Tuesday tvN drama <100 Days My Prince> that started airing on the 10th of this month, Doh Kyungsoo plays two roles - Lee Yool, a good looking Crown Prince that posesses both martial and literary art skills who ends up as Wondeuk, a useless commoner in a village. Doh Kyungsoo has since receive viewers' good response for portraying the sharp yet prickly Crown Prince with his piercing stare and stable diction. 

<100 Days My Prince> recorded 5% ratings for its first episode and after 2 episodes, observed an average 6.2% ratings and peaked at 8.1% across cable TV and subscribed networks. The beautiful sageuk background coupled with the good acting of the cast had raised viewers' level of immersion and consequently the raising the buzz among netizens. 

Although it's Doh Kyungsoo's first challenge in sageuk, and also his first lead role drama, he had met the expectations raised through his steady acting. Doh Kyungsoo had challenged acting for the first time through SBS drama <It's Okay That's Love> (2014) and subsequently appeared in many films like <Cart> (2014), <Unforgettable> (2016), <My Annoying Brother> (2016), <Room No.7> (2017), <Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds> (2017), steadily accumulating invaluable experiences through these film projects. Although they may be small roles, he left behind his glitzy image on stage, and showcased a reversal charm with his purity and steadiness. His chemistry with costars and realistic digestion of characters often result in him being scene stealers.

Despite being acknowledged for his potential, there still remains the stigma and misperception of actdols and actors that first debuted as idols. An industry insider shared, "unlike others that have challenged acting (projects that) mainly focused on visuals, he had concurrently fulfilled the roles of both idol and actor, idols like that shine brightly as they accumulate experience steadily," "as idols with many overseas schedules and tours, it's difficult to focus and shoot one project. (Doh Kyungsoo) focused on the projects with passion, and began with small roles, so instead of prejudice, there are more positive feedback."

D.O.? Doh Kyungsoo? Doh D.O.?

Athough EXO D.O. debuted as the group's main vocalist, the general public is more familiar with actor Doh Kyungsoo. What's astonishing is that while he evokes the charm of an idol while in his EXO member capacity, he's releases just as much of the vibe of a "born (natural) actor." This has allowed him to enjoy having many fans yet receive the acknowledgement of the masses.

Having debuted in 2012 as EXO member D.O., he (the group) had dominated the top position. An adorable yet masculine young man, he had attracted for himself many fans.

In particular, his heart-shaped lips, eye whites and sparkling eyes had caused explosive reactions among netizens. No matter how you look at him, he's idol-like (heart thumping).

During this process, there was a huge change for D.O., and this was the opportunity to show "actor Doh Kyungsoo" to which he showcased the character Taeyoung through film <Cart> that screened in 2014.

180906 Fans of EXO D.O., Rice Wreath Donation during drama <100 Days My Prince> Production Presentation to ‘Wish for Drama Success’

To support EXO D.O. (Doh Kyungsoo) in his upcoming Monday and Tuesday tvN drama <100 Days My Prince>, fans have gathered to donate rice wreaths.

During the Production Presentation of drama <100 Days My Prince> held on the 4th this month at Imperial Palace in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam, Seoul, both domestic and international fans have participated in the donation of rice wreaths, and have donated in total 11,200kg (11.2 tonnes) of rice. In total, Doh Kyungsoo and his fans have accumulated 11,320kg (11.32 tonnes) of rice.

Further to the Production Presentation, the rice donated by EXO member Doh Kyungsoo and his fans will be delivered to the beneficiaries such as nurseries, youth shelters, protection facilities for the disabled designated by the actors and fans.

tvN drama <100 Days My Prince> depicts the 100-day romance between Crown Prince Lee Yool who loses his memory and becomes Wondeuk and Hongshim, the oldest unwedded maiden in the fictitious Joseon period.

On coming 1 Aug, <Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days>, the sequel of movie <Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds>, the film that Doh Kyungsoo is starring in, will be hitting the big screens. A film that screened during the end of last year, <Along with the Gods: The Two World>stirred up the box office and achieved a record breaking 14.4million admissions. Doh Kyungsoo received positive response from playing the custody sergeant who was being taken care of by Kim Soohong (played by Kim Dongwook), who's the younger brother of main character Kim Jahong (played by Cha Taehyun). In the sequel, where the Grim Reapers will search the mysteries of their respective pasts, the story of Kim Soohong, Private Won and Lieutenant Park Moo-shin (played by Lee Jonghyuk) will also concurrently be told. "The weather is transiting (from Spring to Summer) so it's becoming warmer, and the temperature change is rather drastic between day and night, so it's quite tough on set. 180720 Animation film ‘Underdog’, the Chinema Paradise that launched Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN)

The 22nd Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN) will conclude it’s 11-day festivities with the Closing Ceremony on 22 July this month. This year, with more movies and programmes such as a special exhibition of Jung Woosung, the overall satisfaction of festival-goers has risen.

This highlight of this year’s festival was its Opening Film, new animation film <Underdog>, directed by Oh Sungyoon and Lee Chunbaek, which screened 9pm at Bucheon City Hall Plaza on 12 July. The film depicted the adventure of abandoned pet dog Moongchi (voiced by Doh Kyungsoo), whose fate changed overnight, and went in search of freedom with his new-found friends.

This film is the hard work of Directors Oh Sungyoon and Lee Chunbaek, who had previously made history with animation film <Leafie, A Hen into the Wild> that broke domestic records 6 years ago. The film, which featured a strong cast comprising Doh Kyungsoo, Park Sodam, Park Chulmin, is highly anticipated.

The reaction and demand for the film is explosive; having seen tickets for the Opening Ceremony selling out within 9 seconds. It was full house on the actual day of the event. Even Do Jonghwan, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and other VIPs were fascinated by the charm of movie <Underdog>.

Featuring abandoned dogs that rediscovered their identities and went in search of their own freedom, the movie resonated with the audience and drew much positive reception.

In particular, the highlight of the film was when fireworks and paper confetti were released during the climax of the movie, which drew much cheers from the thousands of spectators who were caught by surprise. The audience were impressed by this “Cinema Paradise” which unfolded before their eyes. It was indeed a moving scene at the Bucheon City Hall Plaza. This was the idea of Director Oh Sunghoon and the programmers of the festival to spring a surprise on the audience and heighten the atmosphere.

Animation film <Underdog> which features of the message of ‘peace’, is currently considered to be screened in North Korea. After watching the film, Minister Do Jonghwan expressed satisfaction and saw it positively.

180607 BIFAN Opening Film “Underdog”, Director has eyed actor Doh Kyungsoo since film “Cart”

Oh Sungyoon, director of animation film <Underdog> revealed the reasons behind selecting Doh Kyungsoo, Park Sodam and Park Chulmin as the voiceovers for the film. Additionally, he had hoped that through this selection of actors/actdols, the misperception that only voice talents are able to dub animation films can be corrected and alleviated. 

On the 7th, 22nd Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN) held its official press conference at Seoul Gwanghwamun Press Center. Oh Sungyoon, director of Opening Film, alongside other organiser representatives of the Film Festival were present. 

Having achieved much success and made history by drawing over 2.2 million viewers with the animtaion film <Leafie: A Hen Into the Wild>, director Oh Sungyoon is finally back with another animation film which will be showcased to the audience through BIFAN. Voice actors for this film include EXO member, Doh Kyungsoo, who's also active as an actor, Park Sodam and Park Chulmin.

Director Oh recalled the film dubbing process. Back then for animation film <Leafie: A Hen Into the Wild>, he had issued scripts with continuous drawings of scenes for actors to dub, but that seems to have limited possible ad-libs and freeplay from the voice actors. Hence, this time round, he did the opposite, in which he only issued images of the characters and the actors did the pre-recordings before the continuous drawings would follow after. This method has given the actors more room to craft as well as portray their characters freely and as a director, he saw how acting had brought the characters to life.

On why he had selected the actors as his animation film's cast, he shared, "I have eyed Doh Kyungsoo ever since movie <Cart> (2014). His acting was so good and eye-catching. I noticed him right from the start." As for Park Sodam, "there will be two groups of dog packs, and Park Sodam will be playing one of the wild dogs. Her acting in <The Priest> (2015) was superb and was close to what I was looking for in her character (for this film)." Following his participation in <Leafie: A Hen Into the Wild> , Park Chulmin joins the cast again for this film, Director Oh shared, "his acting in <Leafie: A Hen Into the Wild> was amazing. He's very suitable to play the character in this film.

The director went on, "because of this pre-recording method, it has taken us 3 years to prepare the film. We have also recently done another supplementary round of recording to further improve and perfect the entire project."

He also responded to the question on why he had chosen actors instead of professional voice talents for the film. "Why is there a need to use professional voice actors every time? The issue here, lies not with who is doing the dubbing, but how suitable the actor is to the character being played. I hope this misconception that only professional voice talent actors can deliver a good animation film can be corrected through this film," expressing his confidence to demonstrate that actors can do dubbing and voiceovers through the film. 

He continued, "I hope we can open up towards engaging non professional voice actors (for animation films) just like the United States," "there's this issue within Korea that only professional voice actors can do a better job (and less likely to make mistakes) for animation films. I am confident this can be demonstrated through the film." The 22nd BIFAN that embraces the themes of love, fantasy, adventure and imagination will run from 12 to 22 July across various venues. Films from 53 countries (163 full length films and 127 short films) will be screened.

A friend’s father incidentally saw the filming set of drama <It’s Okay, That’s Love>, spoke and even shook hands with Doh Kyungsoo and manager. He eventually got an autograph. 

Initially there wasn’t any paper around so friend’s father didn’t manage to get (Kyungsoo’s) autograph. When Kyungsoo was on his way off on the car and saw friend’s father again, he came down from the car with a page off his notebook handing him his autograph. Autograph content: “Please always be blissful/happy, thank you!” (This happened in early September 2014 but OP just shared this fan account with us.)

[171209] Doh Kyungsoo: Had watched Stephen Chow's <Shaolin Soccer> when he was young

While China is still debating whether "young tender flesh" (Chinese's slang for young, handsome male idols) can truly act, Korean idols are already quietly working towards the goal of becoming a real actor. Instead of showing off news releases of script reading photos everyday, why not ponder on your perf properly and come out with real presentable works.

Doh Kyungsoo is the first Korean member in EXO that embarked on acting and in Korea, it is also similar that many do not believe that actdols can really deliver good projects. That said, after having only participated in 4 films, this rookie actor is already been referred to as a "trending actor", and has clinched for himself the "Best Newcomer Award" in the recent Blue Dragon Film Awards, and is critiqued to be "the future of Chungmuro". 

Chungmuro represents the film industry in South Korea; so only when one enters Chungmruo, would one be considered a recognised actor. Hence, this label basically is a stamp of approval, recognising Doh Kyungsoo's acting abilities, and that he is no amateur. 

Currently, the film <Room No.7> starring Shin Hakyun and Doh Kyungsoo is still screening in South Korea. Having appeared in ‘first love’ film <Unforgettable> (2016), emotional and tear-jerking <My Annoying Brother> (2016), his latest choice of a black comedy scenario, also allows everyone to see his versatility as an actor. During the Macao Film Festival this time, we managed to interview Talent Ambassador Doh Kyungsoo. Seeing him walk down the red carpet on his own, donning his latest skinhead hairstyle which he had cut for his upcoming film <Swing Kids> (2018), one can almost entirely forget D.O. who stands with his group on stage, but a young actor that's progressing forward. 

"I've watched Shin Hahyun's act since young, and found out that he's not fierce this time."

Doh Kyungsoo has acted with many skilled actor sunbaes and in <Room No.7>, he partners up with "Acting God", Shin Hakyun, who well-known for his attention grabbing part-good, part-evil personas. Doh Kyungsoo shared that he's been watching this sunbae act since young, and have previously thought how great it would be to act together, and he’s now managed to fulfil his dream. "Initially, I was still wondering if sunbaenim will be fierce, but in actual fact, Shin Hakyun sunbae isn't scary, and even taught me acting, the atmosphere on set was really relaxed."

Previously there was a joke going around, when Jo Insung was being interviewed, he was posed the question, "is there a hoobae that you like; would that be Doh Kyungsoo?" and he laughingly answered, "I had thought Doh Kyungsoo was my person, but it seems like he's Kim Woobin's." He then added, "there was one day when Woobin had sent a text message to Kyungsoo asking, "my beloved Doh Kyungsoo, where are you?" and Kyungsoo had immediately answered, "ah, hyung, I'm here." At that moment, it dawned on me that, "ah, he's not mine!" It seems that humble Doh Kyungsoo is also pretty popular even in the acting scene.

During the short face-to-face time with Doh Kyungsoo, one can clearly tell how he treasures his career as a performer. When he first started acting, he had chosen quality projects and was gradually recognised by industry insiders, and had even won Blue Dragon Film Award's "Best Newcomer Award" through the movie <My Annoying Brother> this year. Despite so, he doesn't relax or let down his demeanour as a rookie actor, and keeps a low profile and humble attitude towards acting. When asked if there's any role he would like to challenge, he responded, "there isn't any particular character that I've thought to challenge. I'll read the scenario, and if it's one that suits me, I'll then challenge myself and do my best", as for Director, he shared, "there isn't a specific Director that I'll want to work with, I'm already very happy if any Director were to approach me."

It could be that South Korea's "young tender flesh" and widely popular stars are not as confident as compared to Chinese idols, Doh Kyungsoo refuses to relax or let his guard down despite his acting career having such a good start; even when the next 2 films that he's participating in - movie <With God> (2017), that boast a team of strong actors such as Ha Jungwoo, Cha Taehyun, Lee Jungjae, and movie <Swing Kids> which is currently being filmed, is led by Director Kang Hyeongcheol who's previously directed films <Scandal Makers> (2009) and <Sunny> (2011), but what resources await in the future, will only be ascertained as he works hard steadily. 

When asked, "what happens if a Hong Kong Director like Stephen Chow were to invite you to act/work together?" Doh Kyungsoo had shyly remarked that when he was younger, he has watched <Shaolin Soccer> (2001), the film that Chow had previously directed, and will be great if he was really invited.

With movie <Room No.7> currently showing, Director Kim Yonghwa's movie <Along With the God> about to screen soon, and the countdown to EXO's new album, based on this line-up, one can understand what it truly means when Doh Kyungsoo shares about how "satisfying" it is.

Among the Korean members in EXO, he's the first to begin acting, and is one of the most stable idol-turned-actors. When asked if he'll impart his experience to co-member Kim Junmyeon (Suho), he was embarrassed, and said that he can't be referred to as a sunbae, and said that he will share the challenges he faced with him, support and cheer each other on, as well as "eat delicious food together." How does it feel being the main male lead?

This isn't my first time being the main male lead. The movie I'm currently filming is <Swing Kids>. Rather than it being tiring, the filming now is really fun/interesting and I'm enjoying it.

How do you feel being the ambassador of the film festival?

Firstly, as the ambassador of IFFAMACAO, I feel honored and happy. From now on, I'll also do my best in promoting the Macao Film Festival, and I hope all who's participating in the festival will also enjoy it.

Is your current (hair) style done in preparation for the new movie?

Yes, my role in the next movie (Swing Kids) is a North Korean soldier. Considering that their soldiers' hairstyles are extremely short, so I also went to cut my hair. Because of the movie, I cut my hair short.

You won the Best Male Newcomer Award in the 38th Blue Dragon Film Awards but wasn't present to receive the prize, what's your winning speech?

To be able to receive the Blue Dragon Newcomer Actor Award is firstly, an immense honour. I feel extremely blissful to receive the Newcomer Actor Award that’s only awarded once in your acting career (once in a lifetime). From hereon, I'll work even harder and show my best side in order to be worthy of this award.  

Are there any roles you especially feel like challenging?

I haven't had the chance to imagine what my next character might be like. For me, firstly, one thing that remains constant is that if after reading the script, I as Doh Kyungsoo, feels the strong desire to portray this character, then I'll like to try them one by one.

EXO will release their new album in December. What's the biggest difference between this album and the previous ones?

The Christmas album will still be a present specially prepared for all the fans. We are also actively preparing it right now. If I were to compare it to previous albums, the concept of the album and song styles are very different. In my personal opinion, this year's winter album is even better.

As an EXO member, you are also an actor at the same time. Does the dual identities tire you out?

If I were to say it's not difficult, it'll be a lie. To be honest, despite it being tiring, I'm enjoying it and satisfied that I can happily act and sing under the two identities.

You've said before that you want to try acting in romance movies. Which actress do you wish to work with?

You mean which actress? I also haven't thought about this. There're many great newbie actresses currently and if they are willing to work with me, I'll be very grateful.

The movie that you were in <Room No.7>, is still showing. Are you concerned over the movie reviews? Do they have any effect on you?

I'm very thankful to all the movie journalists who gave a lot of good reviews to <Room No.7>. Personally, I also like this movie very much. And I'm satisfied it's still showing.

What's your feelings on working with sunbae Shin Hakyun?

I watched Shin Hakyun sunbae's movies since young and has always dreamt of working with him. Seeing his screen image, I thought he would be a bit scary and was a little nervous about that, but in actual fact, he's very kind and also gave me a lot of pointers while filming, so I was able to film very comfortably. On interesting episodes, there's a lot of impromptu adlibs we did together on the set, so there're many interesting memories and I enjoyed it.

If a Hong Kong Director would like to work with you, for e.g. Stephen Chow, what will you do?

It'd really be an honour to work with Stephen Chow sunbaenim. Really from young, I've watched <Shaolin Soccer>. I didn’t even imagine it (working with him) so if there’s a chance I would be very honour.

As a(n acting) sunbae, do you have any words for fellow EXO member Suho, who's also currently filming?

Because my filming experience isn't much as well, we will encourage each other. Because we both know how tiring filming can be, we can better understand each other. When we have time we'll also go out for delicious food.
