February gothic moods

-It’s raining. Yesterday, it was snowing. The day before that, all the snow had melted and the birds were starting to sing their spring songs. Who knows what tomorrow will bring.

-Your neighbors are holding a Super Bowl viewing party again this year. You’re getting sick of all of the shouting, and of all of the cars parked up and down your street, and of all the hooded guests who arrive and never leave.

-Valentine’s Day isn’t about romance, not at all. It’s about pairing off so we don’t have to face what’s out there on our own.

-Your fingers are numb after shoveling snow. They have been numb for months. You don’t remember what they feel like anymore.

-If the groundhog sees his shadow, we have six more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t, we have an early spring. We don’t talk about what happens if he sees a double shadow, or his own reflection in the ice. We don’t like to think about it.

-The deer are getting restless. You don’t know why, but they’ve been standing in your driveway for the last few night, peering into your home.

-February 29th doesn’t only happen on leap years. We just don’t remember the others.

January gothic moods

-Remember to take down your Christmas decorations before the stroke of midnight on January 5th. All lights hanging after that are the province of the old gods, the winter gods, and they will demand sacrifice.

-There are words and songs hidden in the howling wind. Don’t ever listen to them, just cover your ears and keep walking.

-Don’t be fooled be the weak sunlight, or the melting snow that comes at the end of the month. The winter has only barely started and it won’t end for months to come, maybe years.

-It’s dark by the time you leave work. Your drive home feels different than it did in the daylight, and it takes much much longer, though you can’t explain why.

-Be careful driving tonight, they say, there’s ice on the roads. They don’t say anything about the ice creeping into your home, or into your heart.

-You startle awake in the middle of the night, but all you hear is the sound of the hissing radiator or the clanking of the pipes. The things in the darkness have learned to immitate these noises and are waiting for you to let your guard down again.

-It’s a new year, but nothing has changed yet and nothing will.

What I write and what I'd like to find:

✽ ALL THE WOMEN - I crave more narratives about women so if you have a WIP with a majority female cast, I would like to hear about it. Bonus points if it focuses on the dynamics between the women. More bonus points if you have complex mother-daughter relationships. Even more bonus points if you have GNC women or femme leaning characters. BIG bonus points if the women are “unlikable”.

✽ Varying shades of morality - MCs that are morally grey or just straight up villainous. “Dark” content. Dysfunctional relationships. I want all the morally dubious content.

✽ Mental illness - as my friend is fond of saying “my kingdom for a mentally ill character”. It does not have to be a “good” portrayal in the sense that the characters that have a mental illness have to be The Good Guys but I’d rather see villains who have mental illness rather than the villain is a villain because of their mental illness. Basically just…I want to see the subject handled thoughtfully and with care. Not this bullshit that mainstream media keeps pulling.

✽ Nonhuman OCs - being human is boring. I wanna be a vampire.

✽ Grappling with morality and what it means to be “human” (sapient) - what it says on the tin. I want to see more characters that grapple with their morality and what it means to be moral. I want to see characters whose circumstances push their moral bounds. I just. I love explorations of what it means to be human and the means people will go to to protect their humanity. Or the ways people destroy their humanity to protect the ones they love.

Dalliance, subterfuge, and abomination for the word prompts!

Thank you for the ask!! These are perfect for my newest WIP, Bokeh. I cheated a little.

All this subterfuge was driving her to drink. Heavily. Rae threw back the last of the vodka in her glass. Her third in two hours. At least it was doing its job, loosening the knot of anxiety caused by having her mistress and husband in the same room.

She turned her back to the bar, eyes floating over the many guests until she found her. Helena. What had started as an ill-advised dalliance with a student had somehow turned to more. Happiness. Kindness. Passion. Dare she say ‘love’?

But the l-word felt so ridiculous. She’d known Helena for little more than six months. What was that in comparison to a decades long marriage?

A lot, considering she was still carrying on with Helena, further twisting her already abominable marriage. A weak facsimile of what the institution ought to be. Yes, she had a hand in making it what it was, but Richard was hardly free from guilt.

Her eyes found his in the crowd, where he was watching her like a hawk.

WIP Introduction

Bokeh - A tragedy exploring mental health and accepting the love we think we deserve

When Helena goes back to school for a photography degree, she never expects to fall for her Photography I professor, Rachel "Rae" Giroux. Even less expected is the relationship that blooms once the semester is over. What starts out as an ill advised summer fling, soon turns serious. They tell themselves little lies to save their sanity.

My marriage was over anyway.

She's not my professor anymore.

But when a scheduling conflict lands Helena back in Rae's class in the fall, her already fragile mental health starts to unravel.

SLAMMING IN FOR MAMA GOTHIC HORROR BC ITS ONE OF MY FAVE MOVIES CHINHANDS

ITS SUCH A GOOD FILM. Okay so this one is very nebulous because it’s very new because I literally just saw this film last month. But the basic premise is. There’s a girl probably teen aged. She and her mom move into a new house. Mother is not a good parent. She loves her kid but she’s not a good parent. And this new house is haunted by a Mama-esque spirit. The spirit protects the girl while also being a little shit and sorta slowly driving the mother insane. And that’s as far as I got basically.

It's not an "abandoned" WIP, I didn't intentionally leave it in the forest to die and forget about it, it is a lost wip who wandered into the forest despite my pleas not to. I sit at the edge of the forest every day and hear it calling for help but there is nothing I can do. It is a haunting wip

White as Snow, Red of Blood for the WIP game?

Aha, that, my dear friend, is a WIP that was born out of pure spite. I have seen one too many fucking times that authors should not write about incest and I fuckin snapped. Really, this isn't my fault. I was pushed to this point. /s

Anyway. So I took a class this semester called Women Writers and it explored all the different women writers that have written, retold, or used fairy tale elements in their works. And for the final project, we had the option of remediating a work we read. OR. Creating our own fairy tale in the style of one of the authors we read. I chose the latter. And thus, White as Snow, Red as Blood was born. Gonna put it under a cut because incest.

SO. The basic gist is, there are two sisters and one is getting married off because That's How It Goes. And it's basically a twist on Bluebeard and Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber. Growing up so isolated, the sisters have become Quite Close. Alice is the older sister, Cora the younger. Cora is getting married off, Alice was married but her husband died Quite Tragically (read: she killed him because he was a dick) and even before we know what Cora's husband is like, Alice Has A Plan. I haven't decided how dickish Cora's husband is, but I want there to be an element of jealousy on Alice's part so everything is a bit muddled when it's revealed that she killed Cora's husband. Cuz yeah, Alice is Bluebeard in this scenario.
