Title: The Green Man and the Vampire 12/??

Pairing: Astarion/Tav

Summary: A no tadpole AU in which hermit druid forest man M'keon (Tav) finds a vampire in his shed and decides the best course of action is to adopt it like a wounded animal. As one does.

After ensuring that there’s nothing else hiding in the pack Astarion stares at his small hoard of possessions. It’s more than he’s had to call his own in two hundred years. The thought makes his chest ache and his stomach roil.

“Why do you keep doing this?” he blurts, not even fully conscious of speaking.

“Doing what?” M’keon asks.

“This,” Astarion gestures vaguely. “Buying me things. Being nice .”

“Because I want to.”

Astarion dares to look up only to find the druid staring at him with a look of profound befuddlement. Astarion feels nearly as confused himself. “But why?” he presses. “I fail to see how it benefits you.” When M’keon continues to stare at him blankly, Astarion blunders onward, “I can understand being so desperate for company you’ll let even me hang around. But this,” he gestures again, “I know you haven’t the money for these things. Yet you’ve rejected my every attempt to repay you.”

from The Green Man and the Vampire chapter 12 (which is just over halfway written)

The druid himself returns before the sun goes down. Astarion hears the door and muffled voices from downstairs, but can’t make out what they’re saying. It’s not until some time later that the door creaks open. By then Astarion has arranged himself into a carefully crafted pose, lounging on the bed with the book he’s been unable to focus on for most of the day, the very picture of boredom. Pretending he hasn’t spent the whole day waiting for M’keon to return like the sort of infatuated damsels usually present in these books. He’s certainly no damsel, and M’keon is decidedly not the heroic type.

And Astarion isn’t thinking about this.

Thankfully he’s able to wrangle his thoughts back to reality by the time the bedroom door opens and M’keon slips inside. The dog is at his heels, and pushes through his legs to bound over and shove its nose into Astarion’s face.

“Ugh,” Astarion exclaims, cringing as he’s accosted by dog breath. “Get off me you horrid beast,” he complains, shoving the animal’s head away and scrambling upright to get his face out of reach. “I was enjoying a day without the stench of dog for once.”

So obviously the Emperor's whole seduction ploy wasn't going to work on AroAce icon M'keon Amberglow. But anyone who's spent any amount of time digging around in his brain will probably come up with the foolproof strategy that I like to call:

Are You My Mother?

Because much as he pretends he doesn't care, how can a half-elf raised by a dwarf not wonder who his birth parents are? And if mom's been off fighting some mindflayer war for his whole life that's a lot more comforting than just being abandoned.

not to be controversial bc I know this is like…not in line with shifting opinions on fanfic comment culture but if there’s a glaring typo in my work I will NOT be offended by pointing it out. if ao3 fucks up the formatting…I will also not be offended by having this pointed out…

‘looking forward to the next update’ and ‘I hope you update soon!’ are different vibes than a demand, and should be read in good faith because a reader is finding their way to tell you how much they love it. I will not be mad at this.

‘I don’t usually like this ship but this fic made me feel something’ is also incredibly high praise. I’m not going to get mad at this.

even ‘I love this fic but I’m curious about why you made [x] choice’ is just another way a reader is engaging in and putting thought into your work.

I just feel like a lot of authors take any comment that’s not perfectly articulated glowing praise in the exact manner they’re hoping to receive it in bad faith.

fic engagement has been dropping across the board over the last several years, and yes it’s frustrating but it isn’t as though I can’t see how it happens. comment anxiety can be a real thing. the last thing anyone wants to do is offend an author they love, and that means sometimes people default to silence.

idk where I’m going with this I guess aside from saying unless a comment is outright attacking me I’m never going to get mad at it, and I think a lot of authors should feel the same way. ESPECIALLY TYPOS PLZ GOD POINT OUT MY TYPOS.

Though the room has nearly finished its transformation to something between a guest bedroom and a storage closet, he’s delighted to discover traces of M’keon’s former life still lingering. He discovers another of those childish adventure novels and a small collection of chipped and scuffed toy animals, but by far the best discovery is in the wardrobe. 

“You do own more than three shirts,” he accuses when the druid reappears in the doorway.

“Those are old,” M’keon defends, sheepish.

I wish more fanartists would put their work on AO3. Just followed an artist who organizes their work by making a series for Fandom X, and within that, they have multi-chapter works for different ships & gen. Every new chapter is just their latest image for that subject.

It's been so delightful not to have to wade through social media algorithms and endless ads.

i do unironically think the best artists of our generation are posting to get 20 notes and 3 reblogs btw. that fanfic with like 45 kudos is some of the best stuff ever written. those OCs you carry around have some of the richest backstories and worldbuilding someone has ever seen. please do not think that reaching only a few people when you post means your art isn't worth celebrating.

One massive, legitimate way to improve as a writer or artist or in any creative endeavor really, is to become absolutely obsessed with something and to allow yourself to be weird about it. Genuinely mean this btw.
