“why do you ship them? I thought the ship wasn’t canon?” bro we’re talking about fictional characters, who don’t actually exist in real life, from a media that focuses solely on fictional events that are not real either. so what if these two made-up characters didn’t kiss in their source material? they have lots of nasty gay sex on archive of our own and thousands of novel length slow burn enemies to lovers fics written about them. the fanon content at this point far exceeds the whole canonical franchise. the problem isn’t “it’s not canon” the problem is that you don’t allow yourself to let go of canon and enjoy the wonder of fan contents that are just as good / valid

“you’re a writer, can you explain your process?” yes. first, i panic. then i procrastinate. then, in a fit of productivity at 3 a.m., i create chaos.

you read stuff on wattpad for shit and giggles where most of the fics there are reader-inserted ones written in 1st person pov where y/n is a barely legal white girl with blonde hair and blue “orbs” who’s so smol and fragile that she’s dependent entirely on this morally questionable guy who’s killing people for a living but for some reason happens to have a soft spot for her.
you read real actual literature on archive of our own where it’s two middle aged men, who are each other’s sworn enemies, with tragic past, trauma and strong homoerotic tension. and while they’ve made each other bleed, killed each other’s friends and loved ones out of jealousy / possessiveness, lied and betrayed and manipulated, the rawness, depth, complexity and slow burn will keep you up all night, haunt you during your day and possibly change your life forever. and also the sex isn’t just smut. the sex is poetry that puts Shakespeare to shame

do you write fics for yourself or for other fandom members?
myself, of course. why would anybody spend hours / days / weeks / months / years writing for free if they weren’t doing what they loved for themselves but for someone else to what? please them? I can’t imagine dedicating so much of my time and energy doing something I don’t actually love for strangers just to gain validation and approval.
sorry, but if you’re writing fanfics for other people instead of yourself then I think writing fanfics might be a job / responsibility to you, and not something you do out of love and passion. and I’ll never understand why anybody would put themself through that customer service shit when fanfic is supposed to be something writers write for themselves. to clarify, I am not talking about the case where someone writes something for their friend as a gift, because this ask doesn’t suggest that, but rather the case where someone writes fics solely for other people. (remember some people don’t even post their own fics online because, yeah, they write for themselves, not for anybody, hats off to them.)
I can only speak for myself but all of my fics are written for me as a form of self love. because I write what I want to read. I write because I do it for myself and it’s what makes me happy. I only share my works with other people, I only let them read my stuff, but I am always and forever my own priority and target audience of my works.

The most important writing lesson I ever learned was not in a screenwriting class, but a fiction class.
This was senior year of college.  Most of us had already been accepted into grad school of some sort. We felt powerful, we felt talented, and most of all, we felt artistic.
It was the advanced fiction workshop, and we did an entire round of workshops with everyone’s best stories, their most advanced work, their most polished pieces. It was very technical and, most of all, very artistic.
IE: They were boring pieces of pretentious crap.
Now the teacher was either a genius OR was tired of our shit, and decided to give us a challenge.  Flash fiction, he said. Write something as quickly as possible.  Make it stupid.  Make it not mean a thing, just be a quick little blast of words.
And, of course, we all got stupid.  Little one and two pages of prose without the barriers that it must be good. Little flashes of characters, little bits of scenarios.
And they were electric.  All of them. So interesting, so vivid, not held back by the need to write important things or artistic things.
One sticks in my mind even today.  The guys original piece was a thinky, thoughtful piece relating the breaking up of threesomes to volcanoes and uncontrolled eruptions that was just annoying to read. But his flash fiction was this three page bit about a homeless man who stole a truck full of coca cola and had to bribe people to drink the soda so he could return the cans to recycling so he could afford one night with the prostitute he loved.
It was funny, it was heartfelt, and it was so, so, so well written.
And just that one little bit of advice, the write something short and stupid, changed a ton of people’s writing styles for the better.
It was amazing. So go.  Go write something small.  Go write something that’s not artistic.  Go write something stupid. Go have fun.
