I visited Janina at her shop this week. With 15 years of experience working in the vintage industry, Janina Angel Bath, a stylist and tarot reader, opened Empress Vintage about 6 years ago on Alcatraz Avenue, a few blocks from the Ashby BART station in Berkeley. You can find a San Francisco vintage opera blouse, Japanese incense, and herbal tarot cards. Janina herself does tarot readings for clients upstairs. She recently expanded Empress to San Francisco, where you can view the vintage showroom and book space at Empress Studio.

Gardening with Rivka Mason, Malcolm X Elementary School Garden

I visited Rivka Mason today at Malcolm X Elementary School Garden in Berkeley, where she’s been teaching edible gardening to kids for 22 years. Her curriculum includes the life sciences, ecology, and nutrition, and one of today’s lessons focused on the water cycle. The kids took part in many activities, from learning how to add compost to the garden to making “burritos” with the collard greens they harvested.

This Monday, I documented my housemate, April the Green Goddess gardening at her edible garden plot at the 55th St. Community Garden by the Berkeley, Oakland, and Emeryville border. Got to take home this bounty of kale and parsley from April’s harvest, and beautiful purple and green oregano that Lorie, who operates the garden, harvested. I lost my lens cap somewhere in the mud and leaves...I just feel at peace and happy to create again!
