I’m so lucky to work with this wonderful group of brilliant scientists/logistics masters on the Student Affairs and conference organizing committee. We struggled through months of planning (for the rest of them years!) and a mountain of challenges and tasks culminating in this epic week. Grants for students. Check. Awesome parties and student networking. Check. All worth it! Despite pitfalls and tangible stress and the ever impending events, we did it. I can’t wait to help more for the next one! Actually though yes I can, I need a break for a year 😂 #wmmc19 #wmmc2019 #marinemammals #smm #societyformarinemammalogy #science #thefuture #together https://www.instagram.com/p/B6DNlNfl2sz/?igshid=esaa2gppmny3

I awoke way too early from fear of not showing up on time. On this morning, we were honored with an invitation to the Presidential Palace of the Government of Catalunya. The boards of the Society for Marine Mammalogy and the European Cetacean Society were greeted with warmth and support for the Barcelona Declaration established at the World Marine Mammal Conference. The palace is not only the central hub for the government, its nearly a museum of the history of the people here and my own ancestry. We did our best not to look like a gaggle of tourists as we gawked at tapestries and wall to wall paintings but we had to snap a few :) #barcelona #catalunya #marinemammals #science #wmmc2019 #wmmc19 (at Barcelona, Spain) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6DLzbalNuG/?igshid=pnpey8oubizu

Your eyes try to follow the slick gray shapes. You focus on movements and the detectable. But the greens burst through the seabed to push against a slew of bright and diverse blues. Let your eyes settle and the patterns of branching neurons and horse shoes emerge as real as the dolphins swimming squiggly lines above them. Distracting beauty barrages your senses and maligns to drive your thoughts away from science towards this gut wrenching desire to leap into the sea where the colors hide. #dolphin #marinemammals #bottlenose #belize #centralamerica #caribbean #science #fieldwork #conservation #wildlife #nature #naturephotography #dronephotography #dronestagram #droneoftheday #uav @finsconservation @thegraduatecenter @rockefelleruniv @tasabelize (at Turneffe Atoll) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5V2LHnFYQK/?igshid=1o0yn14bbjzar

Beware el Manatí Diablo! It emerges from the depths bedraggled with horns of barnacle to assault your eyes with its adorable plump form and barrage your ears with cute chirpy squeaks. It’s wrath is nonexistent and it’s purpose is clear, munch on grasses and nap. I love this manatee! Collected during field work with marine megafauna at Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. #manatee #marinemammal #conservation #wildlife #wildlifeconservation #ocean #fieldwork #drone #animal #nature #naturelover #dronephotography #dronestagram #drones4good #mexico #puntaallen #siankaan @natalycas @finsconservation (at Sian Ka'an) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4ApWF9lrxN/?igshid=18w00b6ntgngc

Buster turns on a dime at some imperceptible cue. Imperceptible to us but not to this resident male bottlenose dolphin. He takes a straight path traveling west through Crayfish Range in the Central Lagoon of Turneffe Atoll. But with no warning, he suddenly erupts with forceful breaches as if signaling to another dolphin down the way or trying to rouse prey. After the fifth breach he settles back into directional swimming, scanning his head with little lateral sweeps aimed forward. Now to ponder, what makes a lone dolphin breach? Because I’m definitely not solving that riddle in my PhD!!! 😝@finsconservation #dolphin #marinemammals #wildlife #drone #uas #uav #dji #dronestagram #aerialphotography #animals #awesome #ocean #mysteries #nature #animallover #conservation #fieldwork #cuny #cunygraduatecenter #belize #caribbean #dolphins (at Turneffe Atoll) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1tpn3FFC2j/?igshid=oatp56sm4r1g

Dolphins in Belize depend on the survival of mangroves. If it’s hard to fathom how, watch this! The pair approached the tip of St. George’s caye one July morning in 2016. The mother #bottlenosedolphin targets her rostrum towards the mangroves and uses her powerful flukes to generate a loud underwater noise, maybe to startle her breakfast into motion. She focuses her echolocation beam forward beneath the edge of the mangrove forest, presumably in search of prey once so cleverly hidden. And then she’s gone! Her calf waits patiently outside, twisting left and right with what looks like youthful impatience as mom disappears from our birdseye view beneath an impossible tangle of roots and foliage. She spends several minutes racing along the coast before emerging with a burst of speed, reuniting with her calf and heading off towards the seagrass flats on the way to Belize City. #dolphin #animals #nature #naturelover #mangroves #conservation #wildlifeconservation #drone #dji #dronestagram #dronevideo #marinemammals #tursiops #belize #stgeorgescaye #caribbean #science #fieldwork #aerialphotography (at St. George's Caye) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1goOioFZBN/?igshid=1gc5a0bo02xuk

And the animals emerge. A day after storms slammed us against the coastline running back home, a beautiful calm settles in Gloucester. In every direction, the whales rise for breaths. The bursting explosive spouts tower above. The thermal camera mounted drone zips towards the immense humpbacks to capture a glimpse of them in infrared. We intently listen to their cacophonous breaths and watch them from the sky. A freaking fantastic field work day!!! 🐳 🐋 Thanks to Ocean Alliance for having us on the team Taken under NMFS Permit 18636-01. @oceanalliance @kmccabe24 @themuddymammal #science #marinemammals #fieldwork #dji #drones4good #humpback #humpbackwhales #drone #dronestagram #flir #gloucester #nature #ocean #discover_earth (at Gloucester, Massachusetts) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0wb72iDd8U/?igshid=4upacz776ju7

Whales migrating to Central America sometimes chow down on a fish dinner in their breeding grounds. Learn more about #humpbackwhales feeding on the Pacific coast of #Nicaragua in our new Note published this week in Marine Mammal Science! We even documented some of the same whales feeding in multiple years! #marinemammals #science #fieldwork #conservation #centralamerica https://doi.org/10.1111/mms.12613 Thanks @Eli_scientific for the collaboration! https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx5Kf5HFmCX/?igshid=uz621v77zj6d

Congratulations to Dalia, Karina, and all of my coauthors on the publication of our new Open Access article in Frontiers in Marine Science on ecological niche modeling of Stenella dolphins in the Caribbean Basin. Dalia and Karina led this region-wide effort to model the habitats of the Atlantic spotted dolphin, pantropical spotted dolphin and Spinner dolphin. We wanted to understand what the best habitats for these species are and identify the factors that contribute to their suitability in the entire region, and specifically in the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve in Colombia. Find the link below to read the full article! #dolphin #science #marineconservation #publish #openaccess #animals #marinemammals #pantropicalspotteddolphin #spinnerdolphin #stenella #atlanticspotteddolphin #marinebiology #conservation #stenellalongirostris #stenellaattenuata #stenellafrontalis #whales #mammals https://goo.gl/DDoZBd https://www.instagram.com/p/BtyMwWylI1D/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=c0ynjkry4sz7

An explosion from beneath the calm sea. The #humpbackwhale spins and arches high into the air. It spouts upside down and toward the quickly approaching surface. Waters trickles in slow motion through ventral pleats as it’s massive form makes haste towards an inevitable and thunderous crash to the surface. We cheer in awe of its might and beauty, and break into fits of laughter at the now fleeting moment like the ripples left in the giant’s wake. @whalesofguerrero #whales #animals #nature #wildlife #wildlifephotography #wildlifeconservation #naturelover #marinemammals #fieldwork #naturephotography (at Barra de Potosí) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtJW4iYlYaV/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1d0wt7kdhgd0w

My first killer whales were a cryptic and fast moving pair. We sped for several kilometers through the mildly choppy Mexican Pacific to find their tall black fins. They approached us for the briefest of views. More than enough for us! #killerwhale #orca #mexico #whales #animals #nature @whalesofguerrero (at Barra de Potosí) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtHCcmAlP_u/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=vv4xixzmbgbl
