Bottlenose dolphins are crazy: the Christmas party is here (adult content)
Tumblr media
Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) can be considered perverts and one of the craziest creatures in the ocean.
Usually, they are the image of what's a dolphin in the common vision of people. They are cute, lovely animals you can find in aquariums, playing, jumping, and entertaining the public. They are the clowns (in a nice way) of the sea.
But the reality is never as expected. Reality is cruel. Reality is much worse than what we can think of.
In fact, bottlenose dolphins have been discovered to be drug-addicted. Actually, not all populations share the same vices but it has been reported multiple times. Different individuals have been caught playing with puffer fishes to get high on purpose. Indeed, pufferfishes are part of the family Tetraodontidae, in which the members share the possession of a highly poisonous toxin, the tetrodotoxin. See the funny footage from the BBC below.
youtube
But this is not the only weird behaviour they can adopt. Bottlenose dolphins have been reported using different objects and animals, including dead fish and decapitated fish, as a way of giving pleasure to themselves. This applies to both males and females, the latter discovered recently to have also a functional clitoris just as humans do.

Invite me a Coffee!
🙏
Is this a manatee? Nope! is a Dugong! Sadly a vulnerable species. I learnt the difference for this challenge: Dugongs are cousins of manatees and share a similar plump appearance, but have a dolphin fluke-like tail. And unlike manatees, which use freshwater areas, the dugong is strictly a marine mammal. Commonly known as "sea cows," dugongs graze peacefully on sea grasses in shallow coastal waters of the Indian and western Pacific Oceans.
This painting is one of the weekly challenges from @wildlifewednesdaychallenge Go check them out if you haven't already, they're a lot of fun!
PS: I was too lazy to scan today so you can expect a (double) post soon where you'll be able to see the painting up close 😊

Happy #Whales and #Dolphins day! 🐬🐳🐋
Today we can celebrate the International Moratorium on whaling from the IWC! Today, 40 years ago, the IWC signed the ban on commercial whaling. It was supposed as a temporary stop to restore the cetaceans' population, but fortunately, it's still in charge. Although there are countries that continue to kill whales for commercial and "traditional" purposes, this practice is no longer rewarding and not accepted by the majority of the world population. We should press continuously to stop this nonsense huge killing of cetaceans! They are not only intelligent, highly social beings, but they have a fundamental role in the ocean's ecosystem! They provide many benefits, from biodiversity increase to climate regulation and tourism! Here you can find an amazing interactive infographic to understand better their importance: https://grid-arendal.maps.arcgis.com/apps/Cascade/index.html?appid=05f6dc47c20a41d8a0df68c0c99cc2f2
Unfortunately, cetaceans face multiple threats. Ship strikes and bycatch are an increasing problem! Thus, we have to act! Researchers all around the world are trying to find multiple solutions to submit to governments and institutions. But we have to make our part too. Here there are some petitions you may find useful to sign and share!
Follow the World Cetacean Alliance and the Whale and Dolphin Conservation on their social networks (Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin) to stay updated on their incredible work for the protection of cetaceans!
And... a bonus! Two sound recordings (first one from humpback whales and the second one from dolphins) from SanctSound portal (Example Sounds (ioos.us)) Enjoy!

I’m a big fan of Ella Bailey’s series, One Day on our Blue Planet and this is another beautiful addition - One Day on our Blue Planet in the Ocean By @ellastration Published by @flyingeyebooks Aoife and I have already read In the Antarctic and In the Savannah. In the Ocean follows a similar format with lovely illustrations that have a textured feel. I love her distinctive style! The end papers feature illustrated animals found in the Ocean Shallows and Deep. Aoife enjoyed pointing out the ones she knew. The story follows a little Bottlenose Dolphin in the Pacific Ocean who finds a lost baby whale and with the help of her pod, they protect the whale until they find it’s mum. Young children are introduced to simple facts, such as dolphins live in pods, they make squeaks and clicks and have their own unique whistle, and that dolphins sleep with one eye closed! I have been teaching Aoife all about mammals and fish, and this book arrived just in time to open up discussion about sea mammals. It also offers up reference to what wildlife can be found around the coast of Australia and the Great Barrier Reef. I love this little series and it would make a great gift for young children who love animals. Another lovely addition! #flyingeyebooks #ellastration #childrenspicturebook #onedayonourplanet #onedayonourplanetintheocean #childrensbooks #bottlenosedolphin https://www.instagram.com/p/CDGjyS5nwuD/?igshid=1jttyy24rffng

World Ocean Day 🐙 If you know me, you know the oceans mean more to me than you can possibly imagine, if I am not in it, I want to be on it or close to it. I miss all the conservation work I have done over the years and I can't wait to get back out diving and protecting it again in the field 🦈 . I have so many photos I could use to show you how amazing the ocean is and why we should be protecting it, you might think there's nothing you can do but simple things such as refusing single use plastic and disposing of your waste properly (i.e putting your litter in the damn bin! Especially when at the coast) 🚯 . We need to protect our oceans as they cover 71% of our planet and are a massive carbon sink as well as that half of the oxygen available to us has been produced by phytoplankton – this means that every other breath comes from microscopic organisms in the ocean! 🙏 Every day to me is world ocean day, I always want to be spreading awareness on how we can protect it, and the amazing things that live within it 🐬 . #worldoceanday #protectouroceans #oceanlover #spain #cardiganbay #bottlenosedolphin #diving #medesislands #refusesingleuseplastic #throwback #volunteerwork #dayjob https://www.instagram.com/p/CBMHNnPJ7Ob/?igshid=dcjzgqstiwjw

A Wholphin or Wolphin is a dolphin that is an extremely rare hybrid born from a bottlenose dolphin mating with a false killer whale. The name “Wholphin” comes from a mixture, which combines the words “whale” and “dolphin”. An adult Wholphin can reach 12 to 22 feet in length and around 600 pounds of weight with an average lifespan of around 40 years.
