A GUIDE TO CHEAP BOOKS
I did one of these years ago but I can’t find the link to it. It’s kind of a list of places to get cheap books if you’re from the UK. A lot of them are the same as last time and some are new but like I said the other post is lost on my blog.
I wrote this because I wish so badly we had a Book Outlet like the US. I mean hardbacks for that cheap is a steal. But also it’s a good thing because Book Outlet is dangerous for me. It’s bittersweet.
Anyway, onto the list of places to get cheap books.
Book Depository  I’m listing the obvious ones first. I use TBD a lot. They are cheaper than the RRP and it’s free worldwide. I’ve never had problems with them and even if I did, they were really kind and sorted it out. There’s also a bargain section for books under £5. This is my go to website.
Wordery Another site I use alot because again, it’s FREE WORLDWIDE DELIVERY! I usually compare books on here and TBD to see which is cheaper. Wordery has never failed me other than their shipping but that’s because I get the US edition of books. Sometimes they have deals, discount codes but it’s like another TBD. Check it out.
Amazon/ Amazon Marketplace More cheap books on Amazon and the marketplace. Sometimes I don’t mind used books if they’re in decent condition but new condition ones are occasionally few pence or pounds cheaper. Always check the used or new on marketplace. Even on Amazon they have this three paperbacks for £10 thing. I’ve never actually tried this but you can find the selection of books HERE. Just look through and pick 3 books for a tenner, and it’ll be automatically calculated at checkout. There’s a range of books on the list, maybe there’s something for you. Also considering it’s free delivery for books over £10, I usually pick 3 of the books that are priced something like £3.59 (anything under £4) and it’s put it just over £10. Still a good deal.
The Works I’ve known about this for a while but first used it last year. The selection of books is decent. There’s a lot of box sets both YA and not. I do check this but I never really find anything for me but it’s worth searching because I did get two hardbacks for £2 EACH! Dirt cheap for brand new hardbacks. Plus they’re always having deals and offers everyday. Sometimes free delivery or 50% off. It’s great! I’ve also been to the shop. There’s loads of books but the YA range wasn’t huge. Just things like Maze Runner and Hunger Games so there’s more options on the website than the store. I don’t only love The Works for the books but for the stationary too. They also have 6 books for £10 or other crazy amazing deals.
AwesomeBooks I used this site a long time ago and since then it has grown. It’s not just books but games, movies and a bunch of stuff. You can get used and new books here. Sometimes prices are really ridiculous but other times you can get books under £3, there’s book bundle options and it’s free UK shipping. I do want to get some book from here soon.
The Book People  Again, I used this site a long time ago. You get bundles and boxsets for cheap. This is more like The Works. There is a selection of YA and other books but it’s slightly limited in options. Sometimes I search and find books I didn’t expect. It is free delivery over £25 so maybe you could make a huge order and get lots of books.
Rakuten/Play.com  This is a warehouse/Amazon/ebay type of site. You can gets all sorts from here and they have sellers that do things cheaper and have their own shop on the site with an ebay rating system. I’ve gotten other things from here but it wasn’t books. I don’t really remember much about it but I didn’t have any problems. They have a points system too that can count as money on orders.
Better World Books  I haven’t used this but I’ve looked through it and you can get used cheap books. Again it’s from individual sellers that provide the books but I want to use this one day. They’ve got a range of books and mostly YA is under Children’s Books then Teen. It’s Free World Wide delivery.
World of Books Another new website I haven’t actually used but has free delivery and shows promise to provide cheap books. They have more than YA but it was difficult to find them because it’s strangely categorised. I’ve linked the right section I think but it’s worth a look because they’re having a 3 for 2 deal which might not last. You’ve got books like Red Queen, The Raven Boys, If I Stay and more.
Supermarkets Always checked your supermarket on release days or any day. I went on Lady Midnight’s release and Asda had stocked them. Supermarkets cheapen books to almost £4 or under. They won’t have a lot of selection but new books are stocked on release days so always check. I can’t help but go to the book section when I’m at the supermarket.
I hope this helped. It’s definitely more extensive than my last post. Let me know if you use any of these or if this post has helped you. If you order from a site I haven’t used, tell me how it was.
Thanks for reading.

The impact of a coronal mass ejection on New Year’s eve brought a celebration of sky lights to planet Earth’s high latitudes yesterday. In this New Year’s nightscape, the shimmering reddish curtains of aurora australis along a southern horizon are captured over Morgiana, SW Victoria, Australia. Of course, more permanent jewels of the southern skies are on the scene. The southern Milky Way, Alpha and Beta Centauri, and bright stars of the Southern Cross are on the left. In silhouette, branches of the large foreground tree stretch across the Milky Way’s satellite galaxies, the Large and Small Magellanic clouds. The bright star framed near the tips of tree branches at right is Achernar. Alpha star of the constellation Eridanus, Achernar is sometimes known as the southern end of the river.

for the students.. here’s some good reminders! (n.n)
Tumblr media
Hello, friends! I’ll walk you through an organization system that’s simple, quick, and easy–like spaghetti alla puttanesca. ( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°)
I should say it early on that this method requires both digital and analog media. It aims to minimize unproductive pseudo-busywork/unnecessary effort in the process of organizing schoolwork. The time it frees up can be used for actual learning, self-care, or whatever it is that you like to do! (・∀・)ノ
Disclaimer: I deliberately removed social media/gaming apps from my phone. Wifi access is almost always switched off. It’s strictly used for calling, SMS, the occasional photo, and various school-related apps.
Ready? One, two, three–go!
Time Management
▨ Assignment Masterlist
Jot down tasks (and their corresponding dates, if available) as soon as you get them. Get shit out of your head and filed into a place where you can find them easily.
I keep a list of all the things I need to get done in the Notes app that comes with my phone. Digital lists are that much easier to update–you can remove, add, and rearrange tasks however you find it necessary.
During your downtime (wherever you may be), parse through your list aggressively divide big assignments into smaller, bite-sized pieces. Regroup tasks such that errands are batched together and study sessions are spaced apart. The idea is to butcher the wolf into a bunch of tiny sheep so that they’re easier to tackle later on.
(Alternative App: Evernote.)
▨ Calendar
I spend a lot of time on my computer for school stuff, so I’m quite comfortable with using a digital calendar–they just make it super simple to color code, schedule recurring events, and generate multiple calendars that run in parallel. I have the iCal app docked on my taskbar for easy access, and I default to the monthly view.
Tumblr media
You can see that I don’t encode strict study schedules–excess rigidity stresses me out and from there, I’d find it super hard to find my fucking chill. ( ˃̩̩ ⌂ ˂̩̩ )
It takes a bit of discipline and sincere focus on my part, but I’ve found that the flex time (1-1.5 hours) between my classes is enough to finish a good portion of my readings or to accomplish one block in my programming homework. I also do study stuff after classes without prompt from a schedule–just my calendar with deadlines and my assignment masterlist. These time pockets should not be underestimated!
(Alternative App: Google Calendar.)
Digital Management
▨ Folders
Whenever available, I save digital copies of lecture slides, assignment specifications, textbooks, scripts, and anything I could possibly need.
Tumblr media
Instead of leaving everything to rot in the downloads folder, I make sure that each course has its own section in my college folder. It takes around 5 seconds of my life to perform this rename-and-move-to-proper-folder ritual.
Each file starts with the name of the course, and then followed by a short description about its contents. It’s a habit I got from my thesis adviser, actually. This makes everything hella easy to find.
▨ Evernote
I use this app to take notes on everything–academic or otherwise. I have a separate notebook stack specifically for scholastic purposes, and I like that it’s very compact and all my notes are in one place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In separate post, I will talk about how I manage to learn from digital notes despite all those claims that physically writing down your notes helps you better. ( U v U ) <3
Paper Management
▨ Accordion File
Since I digitize as much of my shit as I possibly can, paper stuff for all of my 5 courses fit into one A4-sized accordion file (with 12 built-in pockets). It eliminates the need for hole punch and the fear of things falling out. It also fits a range of paper sizes!
Each tab is labeled accordingly. Some classes need more sections than others, but in general:
each class gets their own notes section;
math-based classes get their answerables section (for problem sets under the works); and
reading-based classes get their readings section;
non-academic documents and receipts get their own miscellaneous section.
I use these binder clips to hold small stacks [of readings or of problem sets] together. They’re super fucking pretty, oh my god. I’m a goner. They’re gold and I’m in love. You can’t stop me. (◕ᴗ◕✿)
And that’s it!
You’ll notice that my system is really spartan, but I’ve figured that simple systems work and it’s really nice to use the time I would’ve spent compulsively making stuff look pretty on things that’re more important to me (like practicing my figure drawing or creating stuff for this blog or being trash with my friends).
I hope you picked up something useful from this post! Tell me if you’ve got any questions/ideas/comments. If you’d like, tell me about how you organize your time and your stuff for school–I’d love to see!
