Tomorrow wraps up 3rd quarter for 2022 (how did it go so fast?), but I realized that I never shared my stats from 2nd quarter. Reading between April and June went quite well, with a good spread of genres and some great ratings. Fantasy was yet again the most read genre, though I have a feeling that might not be the case for 3rd quarter. My reading has shifted a little over the last 6 weeks or so, so it will be interesting to compare these numbers with the ones I will be putting together in the next few days. Do you track by quarter? 2023 prep work. I assign each month a color using my Zebra Mildliners. For the past three years I’ve used the color scheme on the left, designed to match holidays/seasons for the month. But…when all the months get together, I wasn’t really liking how they looked in a row. I wanted more of a transitional color feel while still staying somewhat true to those themed ideas. After a few hits and misses I think I’ve finally got it figured out. What do you think? Banned Books Week is wrapping up. I’ve always been of the mind that banning a book is counterintuitive. You banned a book? Okay…now I want to read it even more. There are times when a book may not be age-appropriate, but I think parents can make those decisions independently for their own kids. I want my kids to have access to everything out there literature can offer. If I feel it’s not right for them then we’ll discuss it, but it’s not for me to take away that option for everyone else and I don’t want others removing that option for me. My reading doesn’t need to be censored. And I will absolutely seek out anything that I’ve been told has something “inflammatory” about it. All the random notes I’ve jotted down over the last year have been gathered and I am officially planning the layout for next year’s annual reading tracker journal. I’ll be taking you on the step by step journey to assemble everything in preparation for 2023. I’ll be including some tips and tricks along the way as well as sharing some of my favorite products. I initially decided on 15 rolls for this #bookoplathon round, but doubles resulted in 17. I couldn’t stand the idea of an odd number, so I added another for a total of 18 prompts. I’ve been penciling in my reads as I go, but may do some swapping around through the month to cover as many prompts as possible. At the end of the month, I’ll get everything entered in pen and see if I managed to meet them all. With an average rating of 4.02 August actually ranked in my bottom 3 for months this year, but you wouldn’t guess that by how many awesome books I read. TJ Klune’s Heat Wave (finale in his Extraoridnaries trilogy) topped my chart and I’d be lying if I didn’t say that the fabulous narration of the audiobook didn’t amp up my enjoyment. Every once in a while, a spread just does NOT match the vision you had for it. Colorful? Sure. Helpful? Not in the least. Also, it’s a nightmare to put together. I could bail on it, but I’m going to see it through to the end. But, I am taking this idea and modifying it for 2023. It will still have a place, just with a little less crazy and hopefully a lot more streamlining and ability to convey trends. Let’s make an attempt to get my act back together and highlight my 5-star reads of the year for you. (You can find all my 2022 reads in my highlight reels as I add them.) Being way behind, we’re up to a 5-star I read (reread) back in March. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell is a fantastic middle grade adventure that works as a tropical, female-centered version of Hatchet. Katana is a strong and smart female protagonist that who is highly inspiring and based off a real indigenous woman on the California Channel Islands. This is a total comfort read with great atmosphere and well-written animal interactions. There are a lot of great life lessons in the narrative and holds up well to the passage of time.
