This is a project that I’m really excited to do, this is a poster set called “Black Women of the Comic Universe”. It depicts some of the unsung black women who are within the comic universe but might not have had the light shone on them yet or their story hasn’t been fully developed. We have seen a lot of progress in movies and TV lately in terms of representing POC but there is still a lot of work to be done. 

In the current state of the US, I think it’s important to show solidarity with each other in the battle against systematic oppression and discrimination of our fellow man based on the color of their skin. I firmly support the BLM movement and always will. I will try to pay homage to each of these characters the best I can and include descriptions of each of them. I found doing the research on them to be the most fun. Their stories are all very cool but for real.. I want a Crimson Avenger movie like yesterday. 

This set is a culmination of recoloring a base game poster as well as a lot of research on each individual character to give a good description for everyone! It was really hard to get a good quality, clear picture in live mode (probably just something on my end I need to fix -.-) but the pictures above a what is in the frames.

You can read about each individual character below the cut as well as find the download link at the very bottom. I encourage you to take the time to read about them. Some have short stories but a couple of them will blow you away! Stay tuned for the next two sets!

Bumblebee (Karen Beecher) First appearance: December 1976

Bumblebee is an African American and a member of the Teen Titans. She is often considered the first black female superhero but that distinction is often given to Nubia as well.  Nubia will be in an upcoming poster pack.

Her powers include shrinking down to the size of an insect. She has a solar-powered suit that allows her to fly, fire sonic force blasts, and sting.

Crimson Avenger (Jill Carlyle variant) First appearance: April 2000

There are three variants of the Crimson Avenger but if you have any sense, you'd agree that Jill Carlyle is the best. She reminds me of a cross between Deadpool and Ghost Rider.

Jill Carlyle as she is often referenced is one of the most badass superheroes in my opinion. She is an African American female who wields two Colt pistols and avenges the deaths of innocents. It is said that she used to be a lawyer and lost a case in which the defendant was clearly guilty. This possessed her to hunt him down and kill him with the Colt pistols (originally owned by the original Crimson Avenger) which led to a curse that surrounds her and the pistols. She is cursed to track down those who kill innocents with guns that never miss, never run out of ammo, and can penetrate any object.

Dawnfire First appearance: February 2012

Dawnfire is a female Congolese superhero. She was a member of an African superhero team called The Kingdom, and she had pyrokinetic abilities. She was able to generate flames, fire, and heat. She also could fly. After The Kingdom disbanded and Dawnfire held a very short appearance in the comic universe, she was hunted down by a serial killer named Massacre and murdered.

Ironheart (Riri Williams) First appearance: May 2016

Riri Williams is a 15-year-old African American girl and a super genius. She is a skilled inventor and engineer. She crafted her own super-suit similar to what Iron Man wears. During a solo mission in which she decided she wanted to become a superhero, her suit became damaged. After hearing of her accomplishments, Tony Stark endorsed her and helped her.

Jet (Celia Windward) First appearance: January 1988

Jet was a member of the Guardians of the Universe and of Jamaican descent. The Guardians of the Universe found her living in Great Britain where they recruited her into the "Millennium Project. She was then given powers that allowed her to control electromagnetic energies. She went through a lot during her life in the comics ending with her becoming the leader of the Global Guardians.

Kid Quantum (Jazmin Cullen) First appearance: July 1996

Jazmin became Kid Quantum after her brother's death (he was the second incarnation of Kid Quantum). Jazmin Cullen is a Xanthuan (from the planet Xanthu). She can create stasis fields that stop time in a specific space.

Ladyhawk (Regina and Rosetta Morgan) First appearance: March 1999

Ladyhawk is the name given to the hero duo of Regina and Rosetta Morgan. Each has her own incredible fighting skill styles, specifically in martial arts. Rosetta is the superior fighter while Regina is skilled in technology.

Malice (Nakia) First appearance: November 1998

Yes, you read that right, Nakia, once T'Challa AKA Black Panther's closest ally, becomes a villain. She is overwhelmed by her infatuation with T'Challa and it consumes her turning her into one of his deadliest foes. She was once a member of King T'Challa's bodyguards leading her to have incredible fighting skills.

I'm honestly really interested in whether Marvel will pursue this story line or not. It seems quite clear to me that T'Challa is interested in Nakia in the movies so far. There would have to be a pretty big obstacle in the way of their relationship to separate them causing Malice to be born.
