Escaflowne Week 2021, 25th Anniversary Edition

March 27 - April 2, 2021

Celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Vision of Escaflowne anime series! Escaflowne Week 2021 is the 2021 edition of a fanweek dedicated to the Escaflowne universe, including the Vision of Escaflowne anime series (1996), the Escaflowne movie (2000), and other supplementary/expanded universe material.

Guidelines:

Participants create any fan content related to Escaflowne, including but not limited to: fanart, fanfiction, edits, GIFs, fanmixes, AMVs, meta, headcanons, and so on.

There are 2 prompts to choose from each day. Prompts are included in the above graphic, and a plain text version is included at the bottom of the post.

Using prompts is not required, nor is participating every day of the event. You may fill as many prompts as you wish on whichever days you want.

For those who wish to create multiple entries, we are announcing the event far in advance to give you time to work on your entries.

NSFW submissions are allowed, but MUST BE POSTED ELSEWHERE in accordance with Tumblr regulations (i.e., AO3, Twitter).

Tag your creations with #escaflowneweek so that fellow participants, fans, and the blog moderator(s) can more easily see and interact with your work. You may also mention the blog @escaflowneweek to notify the moderator(s) of your work.

“‘Unworthy’? Pfha! You’ve come a long way since robbing travelers in the woods, Allen. Your as fine a swordsman as I’ve ever mentored. You will do fine in the tournament. Or do you have such little faith in my teaching?”

“No, of course not! Its not my skills that I doubt. You told me I had to hone myself. I’m not sure I’m ready in my heart.”

“Allen, only you can answer that for yourself. But believe me when I tell you, I wouldn’t have suggested you participate in this tournament if I didn’t think you were ready. And you won’t know if you don’t try. So go on, and believe in yourself. Because even if you don’t, I believe in you.”

My gift to @pikafwance for @esca-ss 2020! They indicated that they liked character interaction, so I decided to make a quasi-comic piece with Allen and Balgus. I imagined this is before Allen enters the tournament in Asturia where his prowess will grant him membership into the Knights Caeli. 

Full disclosure, the town seen in panel 1 is traced from a screencap from episode 6; that’s the bridge where Dilandau almost sniped Van! This is probably one of my most ambitious drawings in terms of complexity, what with the multiple panels, angles, and the horses. I’ll be honest, it was a lot of detail, which was why I skipped properly inking the page and just refining the sketch… which probably ended up hurting the finished product. And I think the coloring is a bit of a mess too. But hey! it was a good challenge, and a learning experience.

Sometimes I think that the only thing saving my music taste is my parents spending a fortune on a Toshiba stereo and a lots of western LPs (in a socialist economy). Yes, including this one.

This is the cover of a bonus mini artbook that came out with the 9/1996 issue of the Animedia magazine. I have scanned it and will post the scans bit by bit, but for now, would you like to know the answers to some of the questions from the book below? They are answered mostly by Kazuki Akane, the director, so the info is on a good authority. However, remember that this book was published while the show was still airing, so what they included is only up to episode 19.

Are there any other things that they’ve created? 🐱 How many races similar to Merle, Naria, and Eriya are there? 🔗 Why was Van able to synchronize with Escaflowne following Hitomi’s lecture? 🩸  Are there other guymelefs with a blood contract like Escaflowne? 💖 Between Amano, Allen, and Van, who is the one Hitomi really likes? 💢 Why does Dornkirk hate the idea of Hitomi and Van getting closer? ♊ Are Allen/Amano and Millerna/Yukari similar because they are related? 🧚 What is the meaning of the words that Varie said to Hitomi? 🐥 Why is Van not supposed to show his wings? ☄️ Are there any other descendants of Draconians, other than Folken and Van? 🧟 Why did Hitomi sympathize with Zongi? 🐲 Why are the controls of the flying dragon mode Escaflowne different? 📺 Is it true that there were some unaired scenes?

P.S. This is a reversible book with the other half being about Slayers/Next. I have not scanned that half yet but if there was some interest, I could do it, just let me know!

Happy Halloweeeeeeen! Ever since I got a new iPad to draw digitally, I felt like doing  a redraw of my Escaflowne/Castlevania mashup pic that I did last Halloween. I figured it would be fun to try it again  a year later! Maybe I’ll try again next year? Who knows!
