god I can't wait to see how the mirror text changes as we get more chapters

not only because i love how the way narration refers to us and kris feels intentionally ambiguious (the usage of "you", especially in stark contrast to when the narration describes kris drawing on the canvas in chapter 3 as specifically kris themself), but just think of the ways it can be recontextualized

"it's only you." it (this being that is controlling and masquerading as you) is only you (you, kris. you.)

"it's what they call 'you'." it (this being who's had almost everyone in town fooled, that believe that even if you're acting a little different, you're clearly still you) is what they call 'you' (you, kris. always you.)

and susie being there with them when you check the mirror in chapter 4 breaks that pattern (intentionally and effectively!), but just imagine all the other possibilities that'll surely leave us gutted

really is pretty interesting how the kh fandom was basically limping along on one good leg (khml) and then they went and shot us in that leg. kh4 crumbs that say nothing mean nothing. it was all khml that had promises for us and that we truly were looking toward. we and we alone were keeping this overall fandom’s hype ship afloat and they launched a harpoon into the hull. i wish everyone who has not found a lifeboat yet or who wishes to go down with the ship good luck

hi i'm losing my mind, those chapters were SO GOOD AUGHH

dess is totally the roaring knight, right? wields a bat, has a close connection to kris, has what looks to be antlers… man that would totally explain why kris is so gungho about helping them, bc if this is all to bring back someone so close to them, then of course they'd open fountains and impede the player at every turn they can. also i love the song in the chapter 3 minigame where the lyrics were super implied to be a song from dess before she disappeared, and it's such a stark parallel to the whole "don't forget. i'm with you in the dark" line. like!! yeah! she IS with us in the dark!! is that a good thing?? i dunnoooo!

god and chapter four specifically was just SUCH a stellar point of development for all the main three, like!! ralsei's desperation to not worry susie and kris, susie's headstrong hope and perserverance, kris's constant efforts to undermine the soul and those little moments like with the piano where they can just. be. ohhh my god everything's ramping up, holyyy shit

oh MAN and in chapter 4 after sealing the fountain in the church, where susie leaves you alone for a moment, and there's a closet door that goes like "looks like a large body could fit in there," and you're given the option to turn the doorknob, and if you do the narration just goes "you turn the doorknob. that's all you do." man I bet the knight was hiding in there and kris knew it

also also chapter four near the very end, you can just wait where onionsan usually is and you and susie will just sit down and stare at the lake, and she's like "do you hear that? it sounds like someone singing out on the other side of the water." there's nothing major about it, it was just such a neat touch that rewards you for waiting a while, to just have a moment to breathe with susie

trying to look into OST credits has me feeling like the pepe sylvia meme, bc what do you MEAN one of the composers for the niche visual novel I love is also one of the composers for pmd explorers?? WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE COMPOSED SMASH ULTIMATE'S LIFELIGHT??

You'd be correct prev, excellent eye for detail there! To the best of my knowledge, all the trainer sprites operate under the same four-color palette rule, seen below:

I'd argue that the trainer sprites have even more limitations than the Pokemon sprites since, in addition to the black and white they all share, they have to make their third color capable of functioning as a skin tone for their respective trainer. That's so insanely cool to me, like! Limitations within limitations, the skill involved to have it come out as great as it does?? These games will never stop leaving me in awe, lmao!

To circle back to Silver, I really adore how they did the lighting for his sprite(s):

Like look at the dithering on his coat, the folds on his pant legs! The way you can see the fabric of his sleeve twisting with his arm?? I'm just repeating myself ad nauseam here, but it works so well to let your brain fill in the gaps when seeing it all on a small Gameboy Color screen.

Just, aghh. Pokemon!!

I know whenever people rave about Pokemon's sprite era, it's usually about gens 4 or 5 (for good reason!), but maaaan does gen 2 have such a distinct visual identity that I adore, and I think a large part of that is how creative they get around their limitations

Like! Look at Typhlosion's Crystal sprite! See how many colors it has? There's yellow, there's red, there's black, white... and that's it! Most if not all sprites operate under a four color palette - and since they all have black and white, that means each sprite only really has two unique colors to work with. And man, MAN do they work with them so well. Look at how the reds aren't just part of the fire, they're used to highlight Typhlosion's fur, to give it the illusion of depth. See how the yellows scatter into the flames, how the whites of the legs spread out where the highlights bleed away?

And look at Skarmory! The reds aren't just part of the wings, they're the outline of the eyes that make the sclera look more yellow than white (and I had to color pick to be sure! that's how effective color palettes can be, when it allows your eyes to 'fill in the gaps'). Most of the metallic shine comes just from how the purple and the white are applied- they made this bird METALLIC. on a GAME BOY COLOR. with TWO COLORS

Staryu's shading is complex by design (shining gemstone center, geometric star shape where the light source hits the faces differently), but look how the face-covering-thing around the gem is lighter than the rest of its starfish body. They both use the exact same shade of brown, but one part uses it as shading and the other uses it as its base! And the reds?? Not just how the gem can look so shiny, but it's used so well to complement the outline!

And look at Jumpluff! It's body is mostly a flat blue, but it helps accentuate the detail on its cotton puffs. Look at how scattered the yellows are, how specks of blue will poke out, making each puff look... well, puffy!

I had to size them up for readability in this post, but these sprites are only 56 x 56 pixels. That's so tiny!! And yet they're able to convey such key details for such a tiny game system, all while using such cozy color palettes!
