Rafael Nadal’s ascension to the top of the rankings, was quiet and subdued this time around. Nadal has played only one tournament this year – the Australian open. For those who do not remember, Nadal retired in the fifth set of his semi-finals match, against Marin Cilic(who eventually lost to Roger Federer in the finals). A high octane match, with a disappointing end, came in the form of a harsh question for the ten time French Open champion.

Alexander Zverev, has often been compared to Roger Federer and has also been tipped of as his successor. However, Zverev’s lack of results at the slams, has provoked a lot of questions on his consistency at the big moments. Zverev recently parted ways with his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero, and is yet to find a new one. However, there is one person that he looks up to, as a role model and as a mentor – Roger Federer.

Caroline Wozniacki won her maiden Grand Slam earlier this year at the Australian Open, with Federer winning it in the men’s division. It has taken a huge burden off her shoulders, having been criticized more often than not, for being the world number one yet not winning a grand slam. Wozniacki is currently just over a thousand points away from world number one Simona Halep, in the WTA rankings.

Just because the 2018 season has begun, it does not mean that the rules are set in stone. Now, it seems that the Formula 1 chiefs are considering the prospect of changing the qualifying system. Their proposal is to convert Saturday qualifying to a sprint race qualifying system. The sole purpose of the move is to attract a wider audience.

Sebastian Vettel was on course to finish third in the 2018 Australian Grand Prix, behind teammate Kimi Raikkonen and early race leader Lewis Hamilton. But Ferrari’s gamble and a stroke of good luck saw the former quadruple World Champion snatch victory away from a puzzled Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes during the first and only round of pit stops.
