It has been an honor to serve on the Board of Trustees of the Dallas Bar Foundation for 8 years (2011-2019). There are countless folks I served with on this Board including Victor Corpuz, Frank Stevenson, Scott McElhaney, Russell Coleman, and many many others. The DBF does incredible work providing grants to community organizations and funding scholarships and in particular the Sarah T. Hughes Diversity Scholarships. Most of my work on the Board related to the Collins Clerkships which provide opportunities for law students to clerk with judges for the Texas Supreme Court (Judge Eva Guzman), 5th Court of Appeals (Judge Carolyn Wright), Judge Eric Moyé, Judge Leornard Hoffman, District Attorneys Office (John Cruzeot), City of Dallas, City of Irving and the Dallas Public Defenders Office. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that this Board functions so well because of its great executive director Elizabeth Philipp. Thank you for allowing me to serve. For the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them. Aristotle We all have to start somewhere when we are doing something new or entering unchartered territory. We all need mentoring and advice, but at some point you need to just do it and keep doing it until you do it well or at least better 😊. Every year for the past 18 years the Bond Buyer hosts its Deal of the Year Awards. We have had the good fortune to be involved with clients over the years that have received recognition at the awards ceremony. This year DFW International Airport received the Innovative Deal of the Year. It was a $1.2 billion taxable deal that brought in investors from all over the world. We are very proud to have been able to advise on this exciting transaction. (at Conrad New York Downtown) https://www.instagram.com/p/B53FG5MlxEg/?igshid=19osucnkzbb4v

A rite of passage comes to mind when I think of the journey undertaken in Mexico from this Wednesday through Sunday for my son. About 5 years ago, his mother, got Kyler involved in Taekwondo with a West Dallas unit called Excellencia Marcial de Dallas. Remarkably, he enjoyed it and kept with it. He participated in tournaments across the country and methodically made advancements. His grandparents, parents, sister and host of family and friends have cheered him along the way. Master Palonco, his instructor, has been a mentor and friend. Now what makes the journey all the more interesting is that his group falls under Excellencia Marcial de Mexico. The leader of this group is Grand Master Santiago of Coatepec, Mexico. Grand Master Santiago was an excellent host and treated myself and Kyler like royalty. From what I understand only a grand master can can ordain a black belt. Kyler was a red belt black stripe for a long period of time, he was a little frustrated because he wanted to advance but understood he had to wait and that he would have to go to Coatepec; Mexico to earn the belt. Part of a rite of passage is going through a journey that tests you and presents obstacles along the way that you must overcome. Kyler’s obstacles were time (patience is a tough thing to learn for a teenage boy), language barrier (most of the time, and especially in Mexico, almost everything was in Spanish) and the concept of going to another country to obtain his black belt. There are moments of loneliness along the journey, and I could see Kyler facing that fact many times, but especially this weekend. Even with all the support and love, I can tell he realized that he is the one in the ring and ultimately he has to want it and follow through. Well Kyler, with his gentle nature, made it through this rite of passage and has made his family and friends proud. He understands and we understand that this is just the beginning. He has learned a lot along the way and we, too, have learned from him. (at Veracruz, Xalapa-Enríquez) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5A76rzluBp/?igshid=zlosksen6oo1

Thank you to all who have served our country. Pictured above is my paternal grandfather who served in WWII and thereafter. I recently acquired this picture from my cousin Stella Jo at our recent family reunion. My grandfather was photographed along with my grandmother and their children (my aunts) related to winning a military award. Seemed appropriate to share on this Veterans Day. Again, thank you to all who served. https://www.instagram.com/p/B4vLcR3F7V5/?igshid=zb6n9heoyixb

Have you ever received a revelation that what you had read about, what you may have seen in pictures or books was actually true? So many times we are bombarded with slick copy, clever sales techniques or well done filtered/photoshopped pics that when we receive the product or meet the person, it doesn’t live up to the hype. Let me tell you, it was absolutely refreshing to stroll along this walkway to view a landscape that matches what I had seen in books and videos and heard about from friends. If only life could always be this way. If only you and I could always be this way. What if it was possible to manifest the beauty that is inside all of us outward so that all could see and marvel? No gimmicks, no filters, just our God given inner beauty. That is the inspiration I received from this landscape and it is also what I hope for you. May your innate gifts be magnified for all to see and marvel. #negotiation #deallawyer #negotiationtips #bossnegotiator #negotiationprocess #trusttheprocess #process #blackgirlsrock #blackmenrock #boss #askadeallawyer #motivation #influencer #entrepreneur #motivationquotes #happy #browngirlbloggers #alaska #comeback #gettingbackup #startingover #aleyeska #aleyeskaresort #gettingtoyes #dallas #corpuschristi #austin #fortworth #houston #sanantonio (at Alyeska Resort) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByE3CLMFtDI/?igshid=13ta0xi2wkutx

What is the process of negotiation? “Negotiation is a method by which people settle differences. It is a process by which compromise or agreement is reached while avoiding argument and dispute.” via skillsyouneed.com Hollywood movies and reality tv 📺 would have you believing that the negotiation process is about clobbering your counterpart and humiliating them. Not the truth! A good negotiation process is about avoiding war and crazy tactics to achieve your goals and interests. It’s about the process. And speaking about the negotiation process, Stay tuned y’all...something exciting is coming your way 😊 And by the way, I have no clue what I was thinking when this pic was taken, it makes me laugh looking at it...and laughing is good for the soul 😂 (at Perot Museum) https://www.instagram.com/estevebolden/p/BwOJkobFsUI/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1qg4r49w0264z

These stories of black men and women being dragged through the media mud, rightly or wrongly, can make some develop a messed up image of people of color. Michael Jackson and Bill Cosby who have already gone through very public trials and now with upcoming trials of R Kelly and Jussie Smollett—there will be more unflattering images of black men and women trying to find their way through a justice system that can be unfair to people of color. Wrongdoers obviously have to be held accountable, but negative images of people of color to be put in the knowing and unknowing racist repository of some to be silently used later as a way to justify mistreatment or deny opportunities is a travesty for everyone. Sometimes you have to have a sense of humor to just stay balanced and open to everyone. And my sense of humor made me think of this Geico commercial. I love his “here we go again” face. 😂😂😂 The positive side to all of this is that we all have been down this road before. Let’s talk about and deploy positive strategies to counteract stereotypes and wrong perceptions of us so that we can prosper and get what life has in store for us. We talk about this tomorrow live at 10 am. (at Dallas, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/estevebolden/p/BvMSfctF32C/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=8ea2qjvpu8g4

Law students from around the country came to @baylorlawschool this weekend to the Annual National Closer Competition. Think mock trial or moot court, but instead it’s a competition for aspiring deal lawyers! Professor Beth Miller is the brainchild behind the competition and I was honored to be one of the judges for the final rounds this past Sunday. The law students negotiated a deal concerning real life company #VizivTechnologies and their Electronic Distribution Technology. Essentially EDT will be to energy what the internet is to information. If you have seen a large tower in Milford on the west side of 35–that’s it! See my pic. Anyway, thoroughly enjoyed participating, the law students presented like seasoned deal lawyers and kudos to @Baylor law school and Beth Miller for innovation and helping to produce better deal lawyers! Doubling down on this #andrewjohnson wrestling incident where the referee #alanmahoney forced the teenager Johnson to cut his hair before his wrestling match. Fortunately, Johnson won, but many times, if not most times, we don’t win. If you are a parent, this really touches a nerve because none of us want our children unfairly targeted. But it shouldn’t happen to kids or adults. It makes the playing field uneven. And these type of tactics can be used in all arenas including in a negotiation. The tactic of exploiting racial, cultural or gender stereotypes to create an inferiority complex in one’s opponent is not new. Even if the opponent doesn’t succumb to it, other participants may succumb or be influenced to take part. It creates an atmosphere where people who more than likely would not otherwise be abusive, become complicit participants in the racial, cultural or gender exploitation. Note: Referee Mahoney didn’t cut Johnson’s hair, a young woman did. See the video @shaunking. That’s why it is so important to point out these types of injustices. An even playing field is important in sports, business, etc., and the use of manipulative and exploitative tactics is wrong and if deployed upon you, need to be recognized and addressed. I would encourage you to follow or share if you or someone you know is interested in the negotiation process and how to address unfair tactics when used in a negotiation. The sculptor of a work of art does not derive his greatest satisfaction from the finished piece. It is the process of creation (the sculpting of the piece) that gives him pleasure. Esther Hicks I’ve learned and I am continuing to discipline myself in understanding that you must seek and feel joy in the process of achieving your negotiation goal or any goal or worthy desire for that matter. I have found that at times when I have viewed the process of achieving a goal as painful that the result at the end left me depleted and sometimes still feeling unfulfilled. Don’t get me wrong, I understand that you have to work hard and that there are times when pain comes with gain. But some of my better achievements and results have come from me enjoying the process and the journey along the way. Seek and you will find joy in the process! Process - a series of actions or steps taken in order to achieve a particular end. In the coming days and weeks I would like for you to take a journey with me to discover why it’s so important to understand the process of negotiation. I really believe there are certain steps one can take that will increase one’s likelihood of reaching their desired negotiation goal. And let’s face it, negotiation impacts all aspects of our lives. One of the best reasons why a process is so important is because it gives peace of mind. When you have peace of mind you are able to “use your mind” as a tool opposed to your mind being controlled by fear and emotions. Let’s take this journey....
