Week 12 | Crowdsourcing in Times of Crisis
Tumblr media
Hello Humans! We'll be talking all about crowdsoursing today! Could we do something right here in this blog? Could we turn this blog into an example of crowdsourcing? Drop anything you can think of about crowdsourcing, to let others come to this blog to get information about crowdsourcing!
Now crowdsourcing, what is it? it is a practice where tasks or inputs are solicited from a large group of people, often via the internet, has proven to be a valuable tool in times of crisis. This approach leverages the collective intelligence and resources of a community to address challenges that may be beyond the capabilities of individual entities or traditional methods. During crises, such as natural disasters, pandemics, or humanitarian emergencies, crowdsourcing can facilitate rapid and effective responses, providing crucial support to affected populations.
One of the primary benefits of crowdsourcing in crisis situations is the speed at which information can be gathered and disseminated. For instance, during the 2010 Haiti earthquake, the Ushahidi platform enabled real-time mapping of crisis information by aggregating data from various sources, including social media, text messages, and emails (Meier, 2012). This crowdsourced information helped rescue teams prioritize their efforts and allocate resources more efficiently. Similarly, during the COVID-19 pandemic, crowdsourced data platforms like Nextstrain provided real-time tracking of the virus's spread, aiding public health responses globally (Hadfield et al., 2018).
Crowdsourcing also promotes community engagement and empowerment. By involving local communities in the crisis response process, it ensures that the solutions are tailored to the specific needs and contexts of those affected. This participatory approach not only enhances the effectiveness of the response but also fosters resilience and self-reliance among community members. For example, during the Australian bushfires of 2019-2020, platforms like Fires Near Me allowed citizens to report and track fire incidents, contributing to a more coordinated and community-driven response (McLennan, 2020).
However, crowdsourcing in times of crisis is not without challenges. The accuracy and reliability of crowdsourced data can be problematic, as the information provided by untrained individuals may be inconsistent or erroneous. Furthermore, the sheer volume of data can be overwhelming, necessitating robust systems for filtering and verifying information. Addressing these challenges requires a combination of technological solutions, such as machine learning algorithms for data validation, and human oversight to ensure the credibility of the information (Goodchild & Glennon, 2010).
In conclusion, crowdsourcing is a powerful tool for crisis management, offering rapid information gathering, enhanced community involvement, and resource optimization. While challenges remain, the continued development of technological and organizational frameworks can harness the full potential of crowdsourcing to improve crisis response efforts.

Week 10 | Gaming Communities, Social Gaming and Live Streaming
Hello humans! How many of you game here? Personally I love gaming. Not for the act of playing a game. But rather, the time spent with friends. thinking about how to beat a level, complete the game, or even get a win in Dota 2 .-.
ANYWAY, please do tell me what your favorite games are! I might get into the game as well, and maybe we could play together :))
Now on to the topic at hand.
Gaming is often misunderstood as a childish thing to do, a waste of time! But gaming is really about connecting with people from all over the world who share your passion. Whether you’re teaming up to beat the other team or just chilling in a private lobby doing stupid stuff, gaming communities are where real friendships are born.
Tumblr media
When you hop online to play, I bet you immediately check to see if your friends are online. If you do, your'e like me! Because like I said, gaming is waayyy better with friends. Gaming brings people together, making every victory together all the more joyous and every loss easier to deal with (mentally). Games like "Counter Strike 2" and "Dota 2" are perfect examples of games that are great fun for a group of 5. You can do dumb stuff and have a ton of fun! A lot of gamers also stream their gameplay live on streaming platforms like Twitch and Youtube Gaming, both these platforms have become the most popular live streaming site for games and has turned gaming into a sort of spectator sport. Not everyone watches live streams for the games but sometimes the streamers. Popular streamers have unique personalities that attract thousands of viewers. These viewers and the streamers form into a community of people that enjoy the same things. What really propels the feeling of a community is the live chats, where viewers interact in real time with the streamer and each other.
Now a days, gaming as a career can earn you a fortune (if you are really good that is). Esports is a prime example, generating $1.72 billion in 2023. Top tournaments like Dota 2's "The International" had prize pool of about $18 million in 2022, and a HUGE $40 million in 2021. Streamers like XQC and Shroud turned their love for gaming into careers, earning through multiple revenue streams. In Malaysia, Cheng “NothingToSay” Jin Xiang stands out as a professional Dota 2 player. Known for his exceptional skills and strategic gameplay, NothingToSay has made a significant impact in the esports scene, showcasing his talents in international tournaments and becoming a prominent figure in the Dota 2 community. He and his team even got second place in the 2022 Internationals. Bro came home that year and immediately bought himself a Lamborghini.
Tumblr media
If you have a deeper passion for games, developing games is another career in gaming. Developing games involves coding, designing, and storytelling. The growth of the gaming industry has provided more job opportunities for passionate gamers and game developers.
So if someone tells you that gaming is childish, ignore them. Some of us want to feel like a child again.
Stay young, game like a child.

Week 9 | Digital Citizenship and Software Literacy: Instagram Filters
Tumblr media
HELLOOOOOO! how many of you have used filters on Instagram before? you know those thing that adds to your face, like make up, or butterflies? I don't know there are so many of them, my favorite filter right now is the one that turns you into Shrek, yes, Shrek. Anyway, let me know which Instagram filter you use the most and which ones are your favorite!!
Tumblr media
SO, a quick recap of what digital citizenship is since I've covered it in a past post. Digital citizenship encompasses the responsible and effective use of technology and the internet. Integral to this concept is software literacy, which includes the ability to use digital tools like Instagram filters proficiently. Instagram filters are more than just a means to enhance photos; they are a gateway to understanding broader issues of digital etiquette, creative expression, technical skills, and ethical considerations. Using Instagram filters requires a keen sense of software literacy. For instance, it's important to use filters to enhance photos without misleading viewers. Influencers like Essena O’Neill have highlighted the ethical issues around heavily edited images, showing how such practices can contribute to unrealistic beauty standards and affect self-esteem (O'Neill, 2015). Responsible use involves being transparent about filters to maintain authenticity and trust with followers.
So what are instagram filters? For people living under rocks, filters allow users to creatively express themselves. For example, augmented reality (AR) filters can transform ordinary photos into engaging and artistic content. Learning to use these filters effectively involves understanding the Instagram interface and adjusting technical settings like brightness and saturation. This not only enhances creative output but also improves technical literacy, enabling users to better understand and utilize digital tools. A critical aspect of using Instagram filters is the ability to evaluate their impact. Research indicates that constant exposure to filtered images can distort users' perceptions of reality and self-worth (Kleemans et al., 2018). Ethical use of filters means being mindful of these impacts and promoting positive body image. For instance, campaigns like Dove’s “Real Beauty” advocate for minimal use of filters to celebrate natural beauty, setting a responsible example for digital citizens.
In conclusion, Instagram filters offer a rich context for exploring digital citizenship and software literacy. By understanding and applying these tools responsibly, users can enhance their creative expression, technical skills, and ethical awareness, contributing positively to the digital community.

Week 11 | Digital Citizenship and Conflict: Social Media Governance
Tumblr media
Hello Humans! Today we'll be talking about social media governance. It's basically how social media influences the way we humans act online. Let me know what you think of it and tell me if I missed out on anything!
Before we jump into social governance, we have to understand what digital citizenship is. Digital citizenship encompasses the norms of appropriate and responsible behavior concerning technology use. In today’s interconnected world, digital citizenship is increasingly relevant, particularly when it comes to social media governance. Digital communities, comprising individuals who engage and interact through social platforms, play a pivotal role in shaping the discourse on social media governance.
Conflict within digital communities often arises due to varying beliefs, values, and behaviors. Social media platforms, as digital public spheres, need robust governance frameworks to manage these conflicts. Effective governance involves policies that promote respectful discourse, protect users from harm, and ensure the free flow of information. For instance, Facebook’s Community Standards and Twitter’s rules aim to mitigate conflict by prohibiting hate speech, harassment, and misinformation (Facebook, 2023; Twitter, 2023).
The governance of social media must balance freedom of expression with the need to protect individuals and communities from harm. Digital citizenship education is crucial in this regard. Educating users about their rights and responsibilities online can foster a culture of respect and accountability. According to Ribble (2015), digital citizenship involves nine elements, including digital etiquette, digital rights and responsibilities, and digital security, all of which are essential in managing conflict within digital communities.
Tumblr media
Moreover, the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in social media governance cannot be overlooked. AI algorithms are increasingly used to monitor content and enforce community standards. However, these systems are not without flaws. Issues such as bias in AI decision-making and the lack of transparency in how algorithms function can exacerbate conflicts rather than resolve them (Gillespie, 2018).
In conclusion, social media governance from a digital communities standpoint requires a multifaceted approach. This includes clear policies, user education, and the responsible use of AI. By fostering digital citizenship, we can create healthier online environments where conflicts are managed constructively, and users feel safe and respected.

Week 8 | Body Modification on Visual Social Media
Tumblr media
Hello Brother☝️(and sisters of course), I have a question for all. Look at yourself, now open Instagram and look at whoever on there. Do you feel like you're lacking in some areas? Do you feel insecure about how you look? Well I'm here to tell you that you don't have to worry about how you look, because everyone looks good in their own right.
Today we're talking about body modifications on social media and how it could effect the way we think about our own bodies.
In today's digital world, social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok have become strong places where people can show who they are, connect with others and seek for other peoples approval. But the way body modification is shown on these platforms has caused a lot of concern about how it affects our own body image and self-esteem. Seeing so many modified, "perfect" bodies can influence how we think about our own bodies, creating a mix of desires, insecurities, and pressures from society.
Tumblr media
Social media is a double-edged sword when it comes to body image. It allows for self-expression and the celebration of different beauty standards, but it also spreads an idealized and often unreachable image of beauty. Influencers and celebrities play a big role in this. For example, world famous pop-star, Park Jimin of BTS, has had a "fan" try to imitate his entire look. From clothing, allllll the way to facial structure. Yes. this "man" has gone as far as getting plastic surgery to reconstruct his face to look as asian as possible. Stating that it makes him feel more confident, and "like he is his true self". While these changes might make some people feel more confident, others might feel regret and more insecure, especially with the constant comparing that social media encourages.
Constantly seeing images of perfect bodies and flawless modifications can really hurt self-esteem and body image. A study by the Huffington Post found that 60% of social media users said it made their self-esteem worse, and 51% said it made them feel worse about their looks. Trying to match these digital standards can make people want to change their bodies. This chase for the "ideal" look can lead to a cycle of dissatisfaction and endless comparison, making people feel they must keep changing their appearance to fit ever-changing beauty trends.
Because social media has such a big impact on body image, it's important to have health education that helps people make smart decisions about body modifications. People need to understand the physical and psychological risks of these changes. Health education should also teach people to think critically about the content they see on social media and encourage a balanced use of these platforms.
Promoting digital citizenship is also key to reducing the negative effects of social media. Influencers and content creators have a lot of power in shaping how people see themselves. They should be honest about the risks and realities of body modifications and promote body positivity and self-acceptance. By showing realistic and diverse images of beauty, they can help make social media a healthier place.
While body modification can be a way to express yourself and feel empowered, how it's shown on visual social media needs to be looked at carefully. The impact on body image and self-esteem can be huge, often leading to more insecurities and a skewed view of beauty. By promoting informed choices, self-awareness, and support in the digital world, we can lessen the negative impacts and encourage a more positive view of body image. Pushing for honesty, better health education, and responsible use of social media are important steps in creating a balanced and supportive environment for everyone.

Week 7 | Social Media Influencers and the Slow Fashion Movement
Tumblr media
Ello once again fellow humans! Today we're going to be talking about social media influencers and the slow fashion movement. BUT BEFORE THAT!! Does your fav celebrity/idol support sustainable fashion? NAME THEM BELOWW!!
Okay, so. What is slow fashion?
Slow fashion is a movement in the fashion industry that prioritizes quality and sustainability over speed and low costs. This approach emphasizes careful production processes, fair treatment of people working in the industry (What Is Slow Fashion: The Ultimate Guide - Italian Artisan n.d.). Slow fashion is different from fast fashion. It's about thinking carefully about how clothes are made and what resources are used. Slow fashion encourages buying clothes that are better quality and last longer. Plus, it's a win-win for people, animals, and OUR PLANET!!
But why should we care about slow fashion?
Well, it's not just about looking good; it's about feeling good too. When we support brands that prioritize sustainability and fair practices, we're making a positive impact on the world.
One example of an influencer who has embraced the slow fashion movement is Leonardo DiCaprio. As an actor and environmental activist, Leonardo DiCaprio has used his platform to raise awareness about sustainable fashion and promote brands that align with his values. Leonardo is considered one of the top advocates for environmental causes globally. He's a popular source for helpful tips and ideas on making better fashion choices. Through his social media posts, interviews, and public appearances, DiCaprio has advocated for ethical fashion practices and encouraged his followers to make more mindful choices when it comes to their wardrobe. And guess what? He even introduced his favorite app on Instagram called Good On You, which helps you discover ethical and sustainable fashion brands.
But Leonardo's not the only one leading the charge. Social media influencers all over the world are using their platforms for good, spreading the word about slow fashion and inspiring their followers to make more conscious choices. Whether it's sharing styling tips, spotlighting eco-friendly brands, or raising awareness about important issues in the fashion industry, these influencers are proving that style and sustainability go hand in hand.
Do you know that the fashion industry is the SECOND LARGEST polluter in the world? Fast fashion causes significant harm to the environment through the excessive use of water and chemicals in making clothes, as well as the large amounts of textile waste ending up in landfills yearly. By following slow fashion principles, we can reduce this impact by opting for clothing made from sustainable materials, created with eco-friendly methods, and designed to last.
Slow fashion also prompts us to reconsider how we view consumption and materialism. In a fast-paced world where trends change quickly, slow fashion encourages us to take our time, think carefully about what we buy, and value the things we own. It's about moving away from constant buying and adopting a more sustainable and purposeful way of dressing.
To close, social media influencers play a vital role in advocating for the slow fashion movement, with figures like Leonardo DiCaprio leading by example. By promoting ethical practices and sustainable choices, influencers inspire their followers to make more mindful decisions about their wardrobe. Slow fashion isn't just a trend, it's a necessary shift towards a more sustainable and conscientious fashion industry. As we continue to embrace slow fashion principles, we can make a positive impact on the environment, support fair labor practices, and cultivate a deeper appreciation for the clothes we wear. Together, let's keep spreading the message that style and sustainability can go hand in hand.

Week 6 | What is Digital Citizenship? Hashtag Publics, Political Engagement and Activism
Tumblr media
Ello again! Who here is active on social media? I'm all over Twitter and Instagram, more so Instagram after Elon Musk ruined Twitter (or "X" as it's called now). Let me know your favorite platform and why in the comments!!!
What is digital citizenship?
Digital citizenship refers to the responsible use of technology by anyone who uses computers, the internet, and digital devices to engage with society on any level (Hummel & Hummel n.d.). This includes understanding digital rights and responsibilities, practicing online safety, and participating in the digital community in a way that is ethical and respectful.
Now, let's talk about hashtag publics.
Hashtag publics are virtual communities that form around specific hashtags on social media platforms. These hashtags act as rallying points for people with shared interests or goals, allowing them to engage in conversations, share information, and mobilize around causes. For instance, #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo are powerful examples of hashtag publics that have driven significant social and political change.
Hashtags publics matter, BUT WHYYYY?!
Hashtag publics matter because they democratize the way people engage with issues, enabling anyone with an internet connection to participate in the conversation. They help amplify marginalized voices and bring attention to issues that mainstream media might overlook. Moreover, they foster a sense of community and solidarity among individuals who may be geographically dispersed but united by a common cause.
Take, for example, the #ClimateStrike movement. Started by young climate activist Greta Thunberg, this hashtag brought together millions of people worldwide to demand action on climate change. Through this hashtag, individuals shared stories, organized events, and pressured political leaders to address the climate crisis.
Hashtag publics also play a crucial role in political engagement and activism. They allow citizens to bypass traditional gatekeepers and directly address those in power. During elections, hashtags like #Vote and #Election2028 can mobilize voters, spread critical information, and monitor electoral processes.
To end, digital citizenship encompasses the ethical and responsible use of technology, and hashtag publics are a vital component of this. They provide platforms for political engagement, activism, and the amplification of voices that might otherwise go unheard. So next time you see a hashtag trending, remember the power it holds in shaping our digital society.

Week 5 | Digital Community and Fandoms
Tumblr media
Ello! Today we're going to be talking about digital communities and fandoms, BUT BEFORE THAT!! Who else here loves K-pop? Me personally, am a fan of TWICE, and more recently NewJeans. Let me know which K-pop group you stan down below in the comments!!!
Okay, so. What are digital communities and fandoms?
Digital communities are a group of people that have the same interests, or have the same goals, or have the same professions, or they all are getting together to support a social cause. They interact, share information, and build relationships all through digital platforms and online networks. These platforms and online networks are typically social media, forums (like Reddit), chat rooms, and other online platforms that enable communication and engagement.
Fandoms is in a way similar to digital communities. Fan culture, or fandom, is a term which describes communities built around a shared enjoyment of an aspect of pop culture, such as books, movies, TV shows, bands, sports or sports teams, etc (Fandom and Participatory Culture – Subcultures and Sociology n.d.). These fans are very interested in the source material and often make their own content, ideas, and interpretations. They also discuss and celebrate their interest. BUT WHY DO FANDOMS MATTER?? Fandoms matter because they foster communities, creativity, cultural influence, economic activity, activism, skill development, intergenerational connections, personal joy, and even emotional support. yes. even emotional support. Fandoms not only enriches your lives, but also the broader society's.
Since I started this blog mentioning K-pop, let's continue with K-pop as and example. Fan groups are a HUGE deal in the K-pop world, they can literally make or break a group. Because these groups are under management of companies, if the group doesn't do well (don't attract enough fans) then the company has to make a tough decision whether to pull the plug or not. For example, the music show M Countdown. it is a weekly show the pits the 2 most popular songs of that week to see the "winner" of that week. Firstly, how that group gets into the final round of voting is entirely up to the number of streams they get, or the position of their song on the charts that week. this is up to the fans to stream the songs, so the more fans a group has, the higher up they will be on the charts. Secondly, in the final voting round, fans have to vote for their favorite artists/group. Again, whoever has more fans will obviously be crowned the "winner" of that week. The same can be said for reality TV, award shows like the Oscars, Grammys, and etc.
To end, digital communities and fandoms are important components of modern social interactions, providing platforms for connections, creativity, support, and shared enjoyment.
