[ WHEN I SAY LOVE | MEREDITH MARTINEZ
In February, my best friend died in a creek. His mother, driving home from the morgue, stopped at Food Lion and bought frozen turkeys, nine of them, his weight down to the pound, burdens she carried, one at a time, straight to the bathroom of her third floor apartment. She unwrapped them carefully, like removing bandages, aware of her rings, her hangnails. Still in her clothes, she kneeled in the tub, gathered the turkeys around her in the shape of his corpse. She whispered to them, hushing their goosebumps, her cheek on a breast, where his shoulder would be. A cold fod, rose from them, sweating her hair, her upper lip, how the flu tastes like vinegar. She slept on her side, dreaming his body, his muddy lungs and freeze-dried hair, breathing with owls, eyes like sugared grapes. She woke choking on juice, shirt stinking, crotch slick from ruined draining poultry. The bird in her arms, limp, headless, pissing bacteria, waved its useless wings at her. She punched and shook it, broke its thighs, tore skin with her teeth. Vomited into its cavity, screaming, when I say love, this is what I mean.]

does anyone have that quote that goes something like 'white germans under the nazis lived just fine as long as they were loyal to the state, gave their children to the army, and paid their taxes, and in this sense many americans would be comfortable living under fascism' trying to find who said it but google is giving me jack shit
