Someone else’s mental illness is not your responsibility. It can definitely become your problem, but it is never your responsibility.

Growing up around a family member who is severely mentally ill (and may be abusive because of it) is no fuckin joke. It’s easy to get the idea in your head that because you love this person, their shitty behavior is your responsibility and you should care for them because “they can’t help it”. You are not qualified to help them. Know when they become too toxic, know when to cut this person out of your life because you are not equipped to deal with their sickness.

I know Tumblr has this general idea of “do not abandon your mentally ill friends/family!” but that could not be a more poisonous attitude. That’s how victims get trapped in abusive relationships. You can pity someone who is sick, and recognize that their behavior is not their fault, but you do NOT owe that person anything if they treat you poorly–illness or not.
