One of the best writing advice I have gotten in all the months I have been writing is "if you can't go anywhere from a sentence, the problem isn't in you, it's in the last sentence." and I'm mad because it works so well and barely anyone talks about it. If you're stuck at a line, go back. Backspace those last two lines and write it from another angle or take it to some other route. You're stuck because you thought up to that exact sentence and nothing after that. Well, delete that sentence, make your brain think because the dead end is gone. It has worked wonders for me for so long it's unreal

morality: a character creation guide
creating and understanding your oc’s personal moral code! no, i cannot tell you whether they’re gonna come out good or bad or grey; that part is up to you.
anyway, let’s rock.
i. politics
politics are a good way to indicate things your character values, especially when it comes to large-scale concepts such as government, community, and humanity as a whole.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
say what you will about either image; i’d argue for the unintiated, the right image is a good introduction to some lesser discussed ideologies… some of which your oc may or may not fall under.
either way, taking a good look at your character’s values on the economic + social side of things is a good place to start, as politics are something that, well… we all have ‘em, you can’t avoid ‘em.
clearly, this will have to be adjusted for settings that utilize other schools of thought (such as fantasy + historical fiction and the divine right of kings), but again, economic/social scale plotting will be a good start for most.
ii. religion + philosophy
is your oc religious? do they believe in a form of higher power? do they follow some sort of philosophy?
are they devout? yes, this applies to non-religious theist and atheist characters as well; in the former’s case… is their belief in a higher power something that guides many of their actions or is their belief in a higher power something that only informs a few of their actions? for the atheists; do they militant anti-theists who believe atheism is the only way and that religion is harmful? or do they not care about religion, so long as it’s thrust upon them?
for the religious: what is your oc’s relationship with the higher power in question? are they very progressive by their religion’s standards or more orthodox? how well informed of their own religion are they?
does your oc follow a particular school of philosophical thought? how does that interact with their religious identification?
iii. values
by taking their political stance and their religious + philosophical stance, you have a fairly good grasp on the things your character values.
is there anything they value - due to backstory, or what they do, or what they love - that isn’t explained by political stance and religious and/or philosophical identification? some big players here will likely be your oc’s culture and past.
of everything you’ve determined they value, what do they value the most?
iv. “the line”
everyone draws it somewhere. we all have a line we won’t cross, no matter the lengths we go for what we believe is a noble cause. where does your character draw it? how far will they go for something they truly believe is a noble cause? as discussed in part iii of my tips for morally grey characters,
would they lie? cheat? steal? manipulate? maim? what about commit acts of vandalism? arson? would they kill?
but even when we have a line, sometimes we make exceptions for a variety of reasons. additionally, there are limits to some of the lengths we’d go to.
find your character’s line, their limits and their exceptions.
v. objectivism/relativism
objectivism, as defined by the merriam-webster dictionary, is “an ethical theory that moral good is objectively real or that moral precepts are objectively valid.”
relativism, as defined by the merriam-webster dictionary, is “a view that ethical truths depend on the individuals and groups holding them.”
what take on morality, as a concept, does your character have? is morality objective? is morality subjective?
we could really delve deep into this one, but this post is long enough that i don’t think we need to get into philosophical rambling… so this is a good starting point.
either way, exploring morality as a concept and how your character views it will allow for better application of their personal moral code.
vi. application
so, now you know what they believe and have a deep understanding of your character’s moral code, all that’s left is to apply it and understand how it informs their actions while taking their personality into account.
and interesting thing to note is that we are all hypocrites; you don’t have to do this, but it might be fun to play around with the concept of their moral code and add a little bit of hypocrisy to their actions as a treat.
either way, how do your character’s various beliefs interact? how does it make them interact with the world? with others? with their friends, family, and community? with their government? with their employment? with their studies? with the earth and environment itself?
in conclusion:
there’s a lot of things that inform one’s moral compass and i will never be able to touch on them all; however, this should hopefully serve as at least a basic guide.

Questions I Ask My Beta Readers
"Did you like it?" just doesn't cut it when you're trying to get useful feedback, so here's some questions that get your reader really thinking about your work:
What are your general impressions after reading? How did you feel when the book ended?
(For fantasy/sci-fi) What did you find most confusing about the world? What did you find the most interesting? What do you want to know more about?
Were there any scenes that broke your suspension of disbelief? Which ones? Why?
Which chapters were the hardest to get through? Did you find yourself skimming the text at any point in the story?
Which character was your favorite? Which was your least favorite? Why? (Note that this question is best when asking multiple readers. If one person really dislikes a character, it could be personal preference. If multiple people can't stand a character for the same reason.... well, that's a problem you need to fix. Unless, of course, you want your readers to hate that character. Just make sure that their hatred enhances the reading experience instead of ruining it).
Did you get any characters confused or mixed up? If so, did this make the story hard to follow?
What was the most suspenseful moment in the book? What was your favorite moment of the story? What was your least favorite moment in the story? Why?
Which setting in the book was clearest to you as you were reading it? Which setting was the most difficult to envision?
Did you feel there was a lot of info dumping at any point? If so, where?
How do you feel about the plot? Were there any parts that confused you or seemed nonsensical/ illogical?
Did you feel any part of the story was predictable? Do you have any predictions for the next book(s)? If so, what are they? (Again, another question that's best when asking multiple readers. Be aware of your audience here. Some people, especially those who read a lot, are really good at predicting where stories are going to go. If those people are able to guess what happens next, that might actually be a good thing, because it could indicate that your story is progressing logically. Too much predictability is a problem, but a little isn't bad. This question is just to make sure the plot twists/progression aren't painfully obvious to most readers).
What plot holes did you find in the story so far?
Were you invested in the story? If so, at what point did you become invested? Did you lose this interest at any point? (The second point here is really good for determining whether you have a slow beginning. Sometimes readers might really like your story overall, but would not have gotten past the first few chapters if they were reading it for fun instead of as a favor for you. This happened to me last time I asked someone to read my work, and it made it clear how much of the beginning I needed to rewrite entirely).
Any other questions or comments?

Fancy Seeing You Here
Browsing through the curiosities of a wizarding grocery store in Diagon Alley, Merlin’s first thought is that he must be seeing ghosts. That finally his advanced age has taken a toll on his mind. For Arthur Pendragon has long been dead and buried. He’d know, for he arranged for the man’s funeral himself.
A man might think it a strange thing for a then-ex, but their days in lovely Venice were some of the happiest of his oft tiresome immortal life. A wise elderly man once told him that retirement is a relentless search for creativity—as sitting behind the geraniums is only fun for so long.
His first instinct is to duck, and Merlin has always more or less acted before he could think things over rationally. It’s how he and Arthur happened, anyway. So now Merlin’s kneeling with his face far too close to moving vegetables with creepy beady eyes. And as if the little suckers sense that he wants to keep hidden, they start throwing up such a racket most of the grocer’s patrons are looking over.
The way he plays off the way he was hiding from view won’t win any Oscars, but his movie career is a story not a different time. Preferably after he’d downed two bottles of pure vodka.
‘Merlin?’
The immortal warlock presses his lips together, taking a deep breath before turning to face his ex. ‘Fancy seeing you here,’ and because he never learnt to keep his mouth shut when he really should, he adds: ‘Thought you were too busy putting wizards on the stake for you to ever consider coming to a place like this.’
Arthur’s eyes widen. His mouth opens, much like a goldfish, the thought flits through Merlin’s mind and is definitely unkind. Yet considering how they parted, he feels somewhat justified in his sentiment. Unless it was a very weird bit of foreplay, tying your lover to the literal stake for the full city to see is just a dick move.
‘Also, I thought you were dead, you clotpole.’
It is probably from the sheer ridiculousness of the situation that Arthur guffaws out a laugh. And then, to make matters even worse, the man pulls out a wand and casts a privacy charm.
A privacy charm! Why couldn’t it just have been a fancy twig?
Merlin crosses his arms to show the man that he is very much not impressed, when to be honest—he kinda is. If only he’d known the prat was a wizard when they met those 200 years ago in the gondola. ‘And you do magic tricks, too. Well, congratulations.’
Annoyed that he’s feeling like he’s a little kid throwing a tantrum, Merlin just glares harder at his ex.
‘Yeah, I do deserve that.’ It’s the first thing the man says and now the warlock feels fully prepared to just hit the blonde prat on the head. Like he would a startled animal, he approaches Merlin, who takes a step back until he’s stopped by the shelf holding the creepy blinking veggies. ‘Why don’t I make it up to you with a heartfelt serenade and an authentic Italian dinner for two under the stars?’
And because Merlin’s poor heart has always been too big for his chest, he takes a long look in Arthur’s earnest looking eyes and decides he can do nothing else except give in. Ex lover the man might be, he’s the other side to his coin.
Also, despite denying it until Arthur has served him a hundred make-up dinners, he was the first one to whom he truly opened his heart. Immortal life gets painfully lonely, and learning that the blonde might not be so mortal after all…
It makes tears well up in his eyes.
‘I buried you.’
Arthur gently cups his face in his hands. The callouses from his sword-training days are gone, yet they are just as strong and steady as they were back then. ‘I know my Sweet. I didn’t mean to deceive you.’ A rueful smile appears on his lips and then he pulls Merlin in close. ‘I only found out I couldn’t die long after you fled the country. Something about you being my fated match and me needing to account for my sins until I would be allowed to meet you again.’
Soft lips press against Merlin’s forehead and his eyes flutter close. ‘I had some big lessons to learn,’ Arthur continues, and then laughs, ‘Trust me when I say the Triple-Eyed Goddess didn’t give it to me easily. I’ve repented from my sins and have now finally given leave to repent the ones I committed against you.’
‘You are already forgiven’, Merlin murmurs, not ready for their hug to end. But then a devious thought springs to his mind. One he will enjoy very much. Stepping out of the hug, he licks his lips. ‘Although… there is one punishment I can think of.’ His expression turns devious, but Arthur to his credit looks only slightly afraid.
And more importantly, fully ready to commit to whatever Merlin might utter as plan. The warlock delights in the shiver his low words elicit. ‘There was this one promise you made me during the summer equinox celebrations…’
He doesn’t get a chance to finish his sentence when Arthur pulls him against him once more. The man’s hand wanders dangerously low on Merlin’s back as he nips at his ears. His voice has turned down several octaves as he answers: ‘Well, then allow me, mi amore.’
Sufficient to say that they both enjoyed Arthur’s atonement. Thoroughly.
You are immortal. You didn’t realize your ex from 200 years ago was also immortal until you run into each other while grocery shopping.

This World Can’t Handle Two Bakugou’s
Hearing aids turned off to have a legitimate excuse not to engage with any irksome reporters, Katsuki steps out the elevator onto the floor holding his office. The time being ass-O’clock in the morning, he is faced with a dozen empty desks. He huffs, clearly no-one is in yet.
Turning his hearing aids back on, he calls out to make sure. He did promise his meddlesome husband that he would make more of an effort to be ‘approachable’, or whatever the hell that’s supposed to mean. As expected, he gets no answers, yet the lights are already on in his office. And suspicion being his middle name right after explosive, Katsuki slows down to review the situation.
It wouldn’t be the first time someone tried to spring a trap on him—you don’t become the number one by organising friendly tea parties, no matter what Deku might try to convince the media of otherwise. ‘Who is there?’ he calls out, thinking a warning might not be amiss. If it is the cleaning lady, he doesn’t want to scare her, nor risk offending her.
The work that that staff division does behind the scenes is critical to the image of his HQ-office.
Again, there is no reply. Or—it might be too soft for him to hear, meaning that it is definitely not the cleaning lady. All of his staff knows that if they want him to hear them they’ll have to either sign in front of his face or just scream using any reserve of not-yet-worked-through frustration.
Readying his hands for a fight, Bakugou attempts to peek through the glass, but he left it in confidential meeting-mode the night before. For a private session, thoughts to which are very much not appropriate for busting a potential burglar.
‘Show me your hands!’ he shouts as he slams the door open. The person sitting behind his desk looks up, hands sparking. They turn around to face him, only to freeze.
Bakugou does too.
‘What the hell?’ he asks, stunned at seeing his identical clone, ‘Are you… me? How?’ But after the initial shock comes the rage. ‘Tell me, now!’ Bakugou moves to lunge for whatever it is that is mimicking him, when his clone-self raises his hands in surrender.
‘Look,’ it says, ‘I have a perfectly reasonable explanation for this, I promise.’
Screw him, even its voice sounds the same as his. Looking mighty suspicious and as if he’s still considering fighting first and thinking second, Bakugou watches as the clone grabs a small glass orb from its sleeve. ‘What is that?’
His clone gives him a cheeky smirk. ‘Ever heard of the Multiverse?’
If this is what he gets for his good behaviour of getting to the office early, then Bakugou does not want it. ‘Hell nah,’ he shouts, ‘You use that glass orb thingy to get back to where you came from right now or I will blow up your ass so far you’ll fly all the way to Antarctica.’
The smirk turns into a shit-eating grin and Bakugou swallows with dread. Why does he get shitty luck? It’s so not fair. ‘Sorry, no can do,’ the clone says, ‘This problem needs more than one Bakugou to solve.’
And if that isn’t the most perfect line for a record-breaking horror movie, he will eat his shoe. No world can handle more than one Bakugou.
You arrive at your office only to find yourself already sitting behind your desk

Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and it’s revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.

Good Traits Gone Bad
Exploring good traits gone bad in a novel can add depth and complexity to your characters. Here are a few examples of good traits that can take a negative turn:
1. Empathy turning into manipulation: A character with a strong sense of empathy may use it to manipulate others' emotions and gain an advantage.
2. Confidence becoming arrogance: Excessive confidence can lead to arrogance, where a character belittles others and dismisses their opinions.
3. Ambition turning into obsession: A character's ambition can transform into an unhealthy obsession, causing them to prioritize success at any cost, including sacrificing relationships and moral values.
4. Loyalty becoming blind devotion: Initially loyal, a character may become blindly devoted to a cause or person, disregarding their own well-being and critical thinking.
5. Courage turning into recklessness: A character's courage can morph into reckless behavior, endangering themselves and others due to an overestimation of their abilities.
6. Determination becoming stubbornness: Excessive determination can lead to stubbornness, where a character refuses to consider alternative perspectives or change their course of action, even when it's detrimental.
7. Optimism becoming naivety: Unwavering optimism can transform into naivety, causing a character to overlook dangers or be easily deceived.
8. Protectiveness turning into possessiveness: A character's protective nature can evolve into possessiveness, where they become overly controlling and jealous in relationships.
9. Altruism becoming self-neglect: A character's selflessness may lead to neglecting their own needs and well-being, to the point of self-sacrifice and burnout.
10. Honesty becoming brutal bluntness: A character's commitment to honesty can turn into brutal bluntness, hurting others with harsh and tactless remarks.
These examples demonstrate how even admirable traits can have negative consequences when taken to extremes or used improperly. By exploring the complexities of these traits, you can create compelling and multi-dimensional characters in your novel.
Happy writing!

Ways to solve the Why Can’t They Use Magic To Fix Everything problem:
•Magic has a cost. The more powerful the spell, the more it drains the caster’s life.
•’We tried that ages ago.The gods grew angry at our arrogance and stripped most of our powers away.’
•Magic is tied to the stars and planets. Its full potential can only manifest on certain astrological events.(And these are once-in-a-millennia type events)
•Only one will a pure heart and selfless intentions can use their full power.
•All magic users are descendants of a (god/spirit). As the years have gone by, the blood has become more diluted, and magic has grown weaker as a result.
•Spell casters can only cast (finite number of spells). They end up using their gift on trivial matters.
•’After the war, we realized the dangers that magic presented. And so we sealed it away, lest it destroy the world.’
•Everyone has magic. Trying to solve one problem is futile as it can be easily undone(often violently and with much destruction)
•inverse of the above: everyone has magic, but their powers are limited and (mostly) harmless.
•Individual, company, or nation has a monopoly on the only substance that can negate magic. As they rule the world, they have installed anti-magic devices everywhere.
•Individual, group, company, or nation has a monopoly on magic. To insure their grip on power, all magic users that do not submit to them are killed.
•An act of good will spawn one of evil. The use of fire will cause somewhere to grow cold and dark. And to save a life, one must sacrifice another.
•The only magic people have access to is Chaos Magic. No one uses it, for obvious reasons.

A little advice from someone studying extremist groups: if you’re in a social media environment where the daily ubiquitous message is that you have no hope of any kind of future and you can’t possibly achieve anything without a violent overthrow of society, you’re being radicalized, and not in the good way.

There's some guy in a cape with glowing red eyes cackling and waving a skull staff around. He's not explicitly done anything wrong but, like, we kind of assume there must be something going on there. Right?

Cursed item that will destroy the world if anyone says "rhubarb" near it. No-one knows which item it is.

I’ve seen a lot of videos going around of urban-dwelling critters coming to humans for help with various problems, ranging from boxes stuck on their heads to young trapped down a storm drain, and it’s gotten me to thinking:
On the one hand, it’s kind of fascinating that they know to do that.
On the other hand, setting any questions of how this sort of behaviour must have arisen aside for the nonce, does it ever strike you how weird it is that we’ve got a whole collection of prey species whose basic problem-solving script ends with the step “if all else fails, go bother one of the local apex predators and maybe they’ll fix the problem for no reason”?
