kris' whole Situation is increasingly interesting to me because like, it seems like at this point you can convincingly argue they were never forced into anything after the dessapearance. it's very plausible that they chose to make the promise to help her, they chose to take on the role of the cage, and they chose to take the soul. it's not shown that carol (or whoever phone voice is) ever did more than remind them of the promise. they've put themself on this road, and they've walked every step forward knowingly.

but like, of course that's not actually the full story. they were a child full of guilt over a friend's disappearance who made an overly self-destructive promise that they then felt they had to commit to. they fell increasingly deeply into depression until the tragedy at the end of the prophecy almost seemed like a comfort. they gave up their free will to the soul because they were so broken down they didn't want it any more.

hometown hasn't failed kris by actively harming them; they've just all looked the other way (or agreed it was for the best) while kris pushed themself further and further down. no one has ever taken this kid by the hand and told them that they don't have to give their life for someone else's, that they don't have to take the world on their shoulders, that it is enough for them to exist as the person they are. they keep telling themself that they're a broken, hopeless thing that can't hope for anything more than undoing their own mistakes, and nothing in the world contradicts them.

it's so telling that the smallest things start to pull them out of that spiral. someone who has been cruel to them for months calls them a friend once and shows a shred of belief in them, and they Instantly liven up noticeably, call her a friend on the phone, start defending her to others. over the course of like three days spent with people who like them and notice things about them, they've started to turn around on the idea of a years-long commitment to dying. they needed so, so little to be turned away from the path, and they just... never got it until now, until some kids just as messed up as they are told them that maybe they could all be friends.
