ok so that last bit is. partly true, but not entirely.

the usamerican version of labor day was proposed in 1882, first became a public holiday in oregon in 1887, and after the pullman strike in 1894 was made a federal holiday. the international workers' day that everyone else has started in 1889 (tho i believe it was proposed in 1886).

the date of international workers' day was picked by the american federation of labor to commemorate a general strike in may of 1886 that ended up turning into the haymarket affair, which was an unknown individual throwing a dynamite bomb at cops, killing at least 11 people (7 of them were cops tho) and injuring many others

so i would argue that the usa version was not made up to distract from the other holiday, although president cleveland absolutely supported it and later made it officially a federal holiday bc he thought the international workers' day holiday would strengthen socialist/anarchist movements

what WAS created as a made-up holiday to distract from may 1st labor day was "loyalty day", formerly known as "americanization day" (idk which is more cringe tbh they're both pretty bad), which was created in 1921 and then in 1958 president eisenhower made it an official holiday and congress recognized it in 1955 (this was during the whole mccarthyism bs).

there's also law day, which is on may 1st also and is probably also supposed to be a distraction from international workers' day, but like. who gives a shit about law day except lawyers who get to go to a luncheon or whatever
