never underestimate the merits of listening to music in your target language. it might not seem extremely beneficial, but especially when starting a language, you pick up so much vocabulary and it really just helps to get a feel of the language.

just write a diary, it has helped me sooo much and i dare say it has been the most developing thing i’ve done while learning french, nothing else compares

1. you’re exposed to the language daily

2. you quickly see which words are missing from your vocabulary

3. you learn to write about the things you think about a lot

4. learning to actually think in your target language

5. having to look up words and when reading the entry back a couple of days later you can’t even remember which words you didn’t know

6. going back to the earlier entries and seeing all the mistakes and knowing how much better you’ve become

7. when you’ve been writing for a few months and your target language becomes a natural way for expressing yourself

8. when you’ve been writing for a few months and you start seeing the diary writing as a way of self-expression and stressrelief, and the language learning aspect becomes natural and secondary

9. filling out a whole book using only your target language and physically seeing how much you’ve accomplished

Wein Nacht

Ein Tag vor Weihnachten, ich sitze hier im Kerzenschein.

Das Licht ist sanft und leicht, stumm und voll.

Drängt nicht so wie das epileptische Blinken des hässlichen Baums.

“Oh! Der ist aber schön, so weiß, so…”

So ganz aus Plastik

Nadeln wachsen hier nicht an Bäumen,

das einzig weiße an Weihnachten ist der Sandstrand.

Die heiße Luft ist voll von kreischenden Lichtern und glitzernder Musik

Das ist also Weihnachten?

Doch jetzt sitze ich hier im Kerzenschein.

Die epileptischen Lichter sind verreckt,

das Polyethylengewächs versteckt sich im Schatten.

Draußen weint der Himmel und drin tropfen meine Augen.

Die Frau, zwei Meter weg von mir, sieht es nicht.

Ich will es sie nicht sehen lassen, 

verstecke die stummen Tropfen in der Dunkelheit.

Die Frau, meine Mutter, die ich nicht Mutter nennen kann,

die ich so gern hab, die mir so nah ist.

Aber nie so nah wie die, die zehntausend Kilometer weit weg ist.

Seit fünf Monaten, seit August, seit Sommer. Ach nein, es war Winter.

Jetzt ist Sommer, jetzt ist Weihnachten.

Das Fest der Familie, nur ohne Familie.

Der Gedanke zeichnet Rinsäle auf meine Wangen,

So last week my advisor or idk what to call her went up to me in the middle of our morning assembley and told me that my teachers see that I’m working really hard and that I’m making a lot of progress in Thai language, that they love that I pay attention to their class and that they are really happy that I made so many Thai friends…

But her last sentence made me so proud….she said that if I didnt have blonde hair she would think that I was 100% Thai

I’m a sophomore and we have an exchange student from Senegal with us this year. She had never seen snow in her life before this particular day, so in French class, my teacher was just like “fuck this shit, let’s go teach her how to make a snowman.” She was better than all of us at it.
