I am reminded of a film about a young man who comes upon a rat in the streets of Paris. This rat is special; he has been gifted with a talent for the culinary arts. He transcends his station as vermin. Yet he is cursed to live a half life, his greatest talent confined to the kitchen in which he will never be welcome. Yet he strives to live; he conducts himself through the young man, concealed within the chef’s toque. The man becomes marionette to the rat - yet the rat himself is puppet to the whims of his own ability, unable to find significance in the simplicity of his species’ station. In the end, it is only the food which escapes the cruel influence of obligation. It is constituted not by what it must do, but only by what it has always been. Tell me, Will, are you the rat? The young man, controlled? Or are you, perhaps… the food?

last post about moonlight but bro I just… that fucking SCENE where chiron confronts his mother while shes going through rehab. I have never seen such an honest portrayal of a victim of childhood abuse getting to talk to the parent who gave them their complex trauma when circumstances and love mean that you cant just burn those bridges nor repair anything perfectly
i know a lot of people who hate on Paula but the film is so sympathetic to her as a woman in the throes of addiction who had to compartmentalize her abuse of her child with her care for him. in the span of 3 short questions he furiously calls her out on the hypocrisy of criticizing his drug dealing but he cries and hugs her anyways when she tells him that she loves him but he doesnt have to love her back… wiping her tears away and lighting her cigarette for her when shes shaking. the level of closure… fuck!
