THIS HAPPENING, CREATED BY THE VISUAL ARTIST EVA GIANNAKOPOULOU, TRANSFORMS ONASSIS STEGI INTO “CLUB COSMOGENY”, PLUNGING US INTO A RAVE PHANTASMAGORIA WHERE ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE – EVEN NEW LIFE FORMS. IS FAITH IN “SOMETHING NEW” MORE POWERFUL THAN REALITY? WHO GAINS FROM THE FUTURE?

This world no longer exists. A nightclub is all that remains. On the ONASSIS STEGI Main Stage, in Neos Kosmos (the “new world”), in a city once called ATHENS. Here, what’s left of planet Earth’s biodiversity is renewing itself. Here, a new world order is coming into being, where microorganisms, bacteria, plants, animals, humans, and abiotic beings are evolving on an equal footing to establish a singular biopolitical environment.

Colorful neon lighting, flashing lights and bubbles, rave music, Australian didgeridoos, and drums. An amorphous composted mass gradually pushes forth diverse organisms that give themselves over to choreography that is erotic and intense. Non-gendered half-naked humanoids, hybrid objects, beings and bacteria of indeterminate form are all readying for the emergence of a new species. A creature that gives birth to performers who surrender themselves nervily to absurd actions, and two poets that hover over the proceedings as religious ministers, expounding interpretations of the new species coming into being. A rapper repeats the words of the poets, creating a music medley that serves as the work’s climax.

Eva Giannakopoulou, an artist with an intensely performative output, is the being behind everything that transpires inside “Club Cosmogony”. Come – the doors are always open.

FROM A DISTANCE – Exhibition of Contemporary Art 12-14 August 2020, 19:30–22:00 Lazareto, Vathi Ithaca Access: By boat Participating artists: Eva Giannakopoulou, Dionysis Livanis, Aimilia Moraiti, Fanouris Moraitis, Panos Sklavenitis With their common origin as a starting point, five artists from the island of Ithaca attempt a long-overdue return. Adopting a paradoxical transportation to a place inextricably linked to the symbolism of return, they decide to stop at Lazareto; an islet that serves as Ithaca’s antechamber, and because of its central location as a Panopticon, a monument or a control tower. In the early 15th century, the Venetian government, first among Europe's states, banned the entry of travellers from ports suspected of diseases. Later, around 1750, the Venetians built shelters on the Dalmatian coast and the Ionian Islands that worked as quarantine stations for travellers who had to remain there for about forty days until they proved to be healthy. A lazaretto (so named after Lazarus, the sick beggar of the New Testament – a word used since the Middle Ages to describe a sick or poor man) could have been a permanently anchored ship, an isolated island, or a building on the land. Ithaca’s Lazareto, which apart from a quarantine station also operated as a prison, is a small island in the landlocked port of Vathi. Today, it is planted with pines and houses the small church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour – a popular wedding destination. As a hosting station for the potentially infected, Lazareto was the waiting room for coming to Ithaca, the temporary and last stop before the final arrival. Under what conditions, who or what could stop and remain there suspended? ‘From A Distance’ begins with the paradoxical condition of this minimum point within Ithaca, to explore ideas of monumentality, confinement, control and marginal return. How can someone be in solitary confinement when the two islands’ boundaries are blurred due to the minimal but real distinction between them? The small but significant distance between Lazareto and Vathi – which stretches amphitheatrically from the port to the surrounding hills – creates the illusion of a mirrored image, a distorted supervision that disturbs the confinement balance. The participating artists invent narratives that begin with facts manipulation and storytelling, to create works that move or marginally arrive at a place. Installations, screenings, actions and performances occupy Lazareto, highlighting methodologies of a lingering arrival to an epidemic and therefore transitional space. ‘From A Distance’ is organised by the Cultural Organization of Ithaca ‘O Fimios’. Eva Giannakopoulou is invited to give an artist talk on artistic research as part of the 1st series of talks on artistic research. ■ A SERIES OF ARTIST TALKS A series of artist talks is organized at TWIXTlab as part of the ongoing study of artistic research in Greece. Beginning in spring 2019, invited artists will talk about their work responding to issues regarding the production and representation of knowledge, and the ways in which artistic research is being perceived within the current artistic, educational, socio-political context. The study of artistic research is being conducted by the visual artist and anthropologist Elpida Rikou and the art historian Katerina Konstantinou with the generous support of the Research Centre for the Humanities and in collaboration with TWIXTlab. Studying artistic research nowadays in Greece aims at promoting the discussion about the poetics and politics of artistic research. ■ Few words about Eva Giannakopoulou Using the camera as a bodily extended observational tool, the artist has experimented with different artistic practices as performances, installations, videos, participatory acts and projects. With her work, she seeks to explore and capture the complexities of the “visual ethics”, whilst reflecting upon notions of gazing, observation, participation and instincts. Being driven by her interest in social anthropology and politics, she has carried out fieldworks focusing on female, queer and motherhood representations, in relation to radical ideologies, observational methods and tactics. Her research based performances, and projects include interventions in intercultural frameworks, public spaces, and marginalized communities. In such context, she often explores what happens when particular groups of affinity or persons with unusual interests, vocations and hobbies, are displaced or de-contextualized in institutional or cultural events. .

Την Τρίτη 7 Μαίου στις 19:30, εγκαινιάζεται  στη Δημοτική Πινακοθήκη Καλλιθέας- Σοφία Λασκαρίδου η εικαστική ομαδική έκθεση με τίτλο Artists in Motherhood.

Η επιλογή του χώρου δεν υπήρξε τυχαία, καθώς η Σοφία Λασκαρίδου ήταν η πρώτη Ελληνίδα γυναίκα που φοίτησε  στη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών, έπειτα από αίτημα που κατέθεσε η ίδια στον βασιλιά Γεώργιο Α’, από τον οποίο ζήτησε την ψήφιση νόμου για την εισαγωγή γυναικών στη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών.

Στην Ελλάδα, η αρχή της ισότητας των δύο φύλων καθιερώθηκε με το Σύνταγμα του 1975 και θεμελιώθηκε κατά την περίοδο 1981-1989 με νόμους που στόχευαν στην εξάλειψη των διακρίσεων σε βάρος των γυναικών σε όλους τους τομείς της κοινωνικής ζωής του τόπου. Παρά την προοδευτική νομοθεσία και τη λήψη θετικών μέτρων υπέρ των γυναικών, η ουσιαστική υλοποίηση της ισότητας των δύο φύλων δεν έχει ακόμη επιτευχθεί. Σήμερα το σημαντικότερο για την ουσιαστική πρόοδο της γυναίκας αφού πλέον είναι ανοιχτές όλες οι πόρτες γι’ αυτήν από το νόμο, είναι να παραμεριστούν τα εμπόδια που υπάρχουν στην πράξη.

Η αλλαγή των στερεοτυπικών ρόλων που αποδίδονται στα δύο φύλα αποτελεί βασική προϋπόθεση για την εφαρμογή της πραγματικής ισότητας στις σύγχρονες κοινωνίες.

Weasel Dance

The mimetic in the post-digital predicament

Curated by Most Mechanics Are Crooks The weasel dance is a hypnotizing choreography that paralyzes the weasel’s prey. This is, perhaps, a successful depiction of the post-digital predicament: we remain dazzled by the plurality of our on-line identities, digital extensions, “memetic” truisms and mimetic selves while imagining the perpetuation of self-mastery. We, thereby, perform the post-digital trauma: the scars our online masks leave on our faces. This event brings together a variety of artists working with the schizophrenic economy of the internet and digital mediation. In the decade of “Greek crisis”, these artists witnessed the implosion of social and political sphere, the rise of social media and the sudden gamification of life after Reality TV. They experimented with the vast options of identity molding via the use of avatars, alter egos, masquerade, semblance, mimicry, parafiction and the practice of crafty underhanded ingenuity. Yet, rather than feeding a fantasy of heroic subversiveness, they acknowledge the impact of avatarization and thematize the discomforting effects of their mended self-image. The Weasel Dance event transforms Goethe-Institut Athen into a lair of alluring post-digital monstrosities. It is the inaugural curatorial project of Most Mechanics Are Crooks, a newly formed artistic and curatorial band that aims to reclaim insincerity as a tool of progressive discourse, challenging the new belief in the existence of ontological truths, unconditional empathy, disarming sincerity and artistic humanism. Στη διαδικασία της αποχαρτογράφησης, ουσιαστική συνάντηση και μοίρασμα έγινε με την καλλιτέχνη Εύα Γιαννακοπούλου Eva Giannakopoulou, που βρίσκεται εδώ και καιρό σε διάλογο με τους ανθρώπους της στοάς "Σοφοκλέους 66", βιώνοντας την ιδιαίτερη τοπογραφία της, και εντάσσοντας την δημιουργικά στο έργο της. Μαθαίνοντας την ιδιαίτερη σχέση της Εύας με τους ανθρώπους και τον τόπο, μοιραστήκαμε μαζί της και τις δικές μας εμμονές για το ασυνείδητο τοπίο του Γερανίου: το Γεράνι με τα πολλά κλειστά πηγάδια, που διατρέχεται υπόγεια από ένα πλούσιο υδροφόρο ορίζοντα, και γειτνιάζει με τον υπογειοποιημένο Ηριδανό ποταμό (σημείωμα του επιμελητή). >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Εύα Γιαννακοπούλου, "Σοφοκλέους 66". Most Mechanics Are Crooks

Η καλλιτεχνική κολλεκτίβα των Most Mechanics Are Crooks προτείνει λύση στο αδιέξοδο που προέκυψε μετά την ασυμφωνία της Υπουργού Πολιτισμού Μυρσίνης Ζορμπά και του εικαστικού Κώστα Βαρώτσου. Σε αντίθεση με το εμφυλιοπολεμικό κλίμα που επικρατεί, πιστεύουμε ότι η τέχνη πρέπει να ενώνει τους πολίτες, τις πολιτικές παρατάξεις, τους πολιτισμούς, τους λαούς και τα έθνη. Σχεδιάσαμε μια πρόταση που μπορεί να φέρει κοντά τον αρχαίο και σύγχρονο πολιτισμό των δύο λαών, ικανοποιώντας τις προσδοκίες του συνόλου των εμπλεκομένων. Η πρόταση που εκπονήσαμε και καταθέτουμε στο Υπουργείο Πολιτισμού και Αθλητισμού εισάγει ταυτόχρονα στην Ελλάδα και τη Μακεδονία την σύγχρονη αισθητική του μεταψηφιακού ρετροφουτουρισμού (post-digital retro-futurism). Οι τεχνικές παρεμβάσεις πάνω στα υπαρκτά έργα του Κώστα Βαρώτσου και της Μακεδόνισσας γλύπτριας Βαλεντίνας Στεφανόβσκα αντίστοιχα, θα παράξουν δυο αλληλοσυμπληρωνόμενα έργα, ένα για κάθε τόπο, ένα για κάθε λαό. Το δύο έργα θα ονομαστούν post-human pasts/futures. Θα σταθούν οι φορείς στο ύψος των περιστάσεων; Περιμένουμε το πράσινο φως από τις αρμόδιες αρχές. Art befriends peoples! The artistic collective of Most Mechanics Are Crooks suggests a way out of the impasse that occurred after the disagreement between the Greek Minister of Culture Myrsini Zorba and artist Costas Varotsos. In opposition to the hostile climate of the days, we believe that art is meant to bring citizens, political parties, cultures, peoples and nations together. We thus designed a proposal that bridges the contemporary and ancient civilization of the two peoples, meeting the expectation of all sides involved. The proposal we submitted to the Greek Ministry of Culture introduces the contemporary aesthetics of post-digital retrofuturism to both Greece and Macedonia. The respective technical interventions on the existing artworks of Varotsos and the Macedonian sculptress Valentina Stefanovska will produce two complementary artworks – one for each place, one for each people. The two pieces will be named Post-human pasts/futures. Will the official authorities provide this initiative with the support it deserves?
